I have been in here several times, and whilst it is usually a little quiet each time I have been, the great beer choice, including numerous from the Sheffield Brewery who own the pub is always good. I went in last Saturday however, just as the Hinckley and Bosworth Camra group were getting served at the bar. Whilst I waited, I observed the owner and couldn't help but notice a few things. Firstly, the lack of welcome or friendly approach he took with this group was very poor. He served them, but struggled to offer more than a few words when any of the group spoke to him. As a Yorkshireman, I thought this was poor and not a great example of our county and its great pubs. Worse however was seeing a cardinal sin - many of the group asked for one specific beer (the name escapes me), but on each occasion, he poured one he had already pulled into each glass before refreshing it from the pump. This was clear for me to see, but not those that were being served as it was all done out of sight 'under the bar'. It may not spoil a beer but surely the customer should have been given the opportunity to see this for themselves and decide if they wished their fresh beer to be supplemented by one already pulled ? Yes this is a good pub, with a back garden overlooking the river to match, but do not take things for granted - this customer won't.

interesting interior, cheap beer, very clean but all the beers tried could have been better and cooler.

Liveliest pub on crawl yesterday, with live blues band playing. I enjoyed a pint of Five Rivers brewed onsite, but rather like the previous reviewer had time only for one pint. Will be back.

what a great find!! the most eccentric pub in the valley crawl and we all loved it!! £2.10 a pint of their own ale - you can't go wrong. I could spend all day in here but with another 5 to visit, we could unfortunately only stay for one. it's a 9 from me

Not a bad pub in a run down industrial area. Sheffield Crucible best 2.00. Only 1 beer over 3.00. Worth the walk.
Worth the walk to find this freindly pub with some excellent ales. A little too bright / over lit for me but otherwise a worthy visit
Great beer...... Bar billiards....... Pickled eggs...... Top place
Rather different to most Real Ale Sheffield boozers, light and airy with photographs on the wall for sale. There's a conservatory type affair out the back and the pub seems to have had a fairly recent refurb. Bar Billiards can be played. The Real Ale is very nice, wide selection with the Sheffield Brewery heavily featured as it's the brewery tap, prices are good too.

2 bar pub in a derelict area by the Sheaf river - useful for connecting up a Kelham Island crawl (via the Wellington) with Hillsborough. Pub is clean bright & airy & the walls covered by world conservation prints of people, animals and plants. There were 8 ales on plus another 5 from the beer festival. Had the Sheffield brewery Seven Hills of which 3 of the brewery's beers were represented (well, it is the brewery tap'). Nice pub.

Hard to find without a street map and in a run-down area but a very welcoming pub with a large range and variety of mainly local ales. The barman was a very interesting character having lived and drunk in the area most of his life and he kept us entertained with his extensive knowledge as well as recollections of pub crawls in years gone by and pubs long closed. A place to return to in the future.

A favourite of ours. Always a friendly welcome and beer kept impeccably. If you have never been and you like a proper pub then it is well worth the effort to get to (having said that, it's no effort for us - it's on our bus route. Whey-hey!). It's part of our Gardeners Rest, Kelham Island Tavern, Fat Cat and The Harlequin beer run and I think it comes out at the top of the pile amongst all that very stiff competition. 9/10 and I can't imagine ever giving a pub 10/10.

This is one of those baffling pubs Sheffield alone seems to possess; Situated off Penistone road, the Gardeners Rest is effectively based in the Middle of Nowhere since to the best of my knowledge no-one lives in the immediate vicinity, and most of the adjacent buildings are either empty or derelict. Its not an ideal location, which makes it all the more fascinating that it is home to a delightful pub with plenty of punters in. This place spent a long time closed following the 2007 floods but appears back to full fitness, with multiple Sheffield Brewery beers on as well as a range of excellent guests which were too numerous to try and list. My introduction to Bar Billiards in here was not altogether successful but the rest of the experience was top-notch.

First visit since pub reopened after flood.
Structurally unchanged but the bar has been replaced with a more open, modern one whilst all bench seating is new. Comfortably furnished and lit; divided into three main drinking areas. Walls in main bar adorned with photographs from a local competition/exhibition on at the time.
Impressive beer lineup; Twelve handpumps dispense up to 10 beers and two ciders, four ales were from the nearby Sheffield Brewing Company. All beers I tried were very well kept, and priced between 2 and 2.40.
Live accoustic music staged most Fridays and some Saturdays: on my visit blues guitarrist Jim O'Mahoney was covering the likes of Bob Dylan and Ry Cooder. Check with pub for next gig, or see their website gardenersrest dot com.
Very friendly welcoming staff, with a determination to make this pub a success; I was very pleased to see it reopened and it deserves to succeed.

Good choice of ales and manages to have a pretty good atmosphere for saying it's relatively out on a limb in an industrial area. I suppose, the proximity (10/15 minute walk) to lots of other fine hostelries helps. When we were there there was an impromptu singsong by some really good singers, as well as a huge buffet that was meant for morris dancers but was enough to feed everyone in the pub! Not to mention a party of beer tickers dressed up as their favourite tipple - I can definitely remember a Spitfire and Green(e) King. (Was that you Gill?) I don't suppose all these random shenanigans happen every night, but I intend to do some more investigating!

Enjoyed another visit to this excellent pub on Friday, and settled in the conservatory with friends. All theor own local brews were available but I chose a couple of micros, Yard of Ale Tards Ahead and Fox Warrior.
Had been looking forward to the reopening and not disappointed. Clearly just refurbished, it's bright and airy whilst retaining the atmosphere of a proper traditional boozer. Two rooms, the large bar room and a smaller room to the left as you enter. Also a conservatory area and riverside patio at the back. Impressive abstract paintings of Sheffield cover the walls, and these are for sale. Pleased to report that the bar billiards table is alive and well and sits proudly in the bar room. No piped music or any distractions which gives the place a timeless feel. 3 beers from the Sheffield brewery (brewed here), Crucible Best, Paradise Pale and Sheffield Porter, plus 4 from other microbreweries around the country. Quiet on my visit but I bet it gets bustling. Well worth the walk from the centre and an integral part of the Valley of Beer trail. Not to be missed.

I think it is so great to be able to write reviews about this pub that re-opened last month after a couple of years closure due to the Sheffield floods. This was our 4th pub on the tour round for the beer tickers pre Xmas fest and great to be back again. Enjoyed Monty's Midnight, Great Orme Whiteout, Brewdog Equity for Punks and Ironbridge Hickockgold. Lovely pub and great atmosphere.
Went along to the opening of this fine pub yesterday at 3pm. So glad it is back on the circuit. 8 real ales on. 4 from Sheffield Brewing Co and 4 guests from micros - Ilkley, Sambrook, Concrete Cow and Liverpool Organic. It looks great inside after the restoration following the floods of 2007, and there were pictures from an artist back on the walls, and seating out in the conservatory. Welcome back Pat and Eddy.
just heard on BBC Radio Sheffield that the pub is re-opening on monday 23rd november 2009 at 3pm
The pub seems to have reopened. Hope it still has a bar billiards table
Have heard rumours of an August re-opening... anyone got any news?
HEARTBREAKING to see this still hasn't re-opened. What a wonderful pub.
This pub was damaged following the Sheffield floods in June 2007 and has not yet re-opened
What a shame that the Gardeners has not re-opened after the floods of June 2007. Sadly missed
Called again to put a note through the door to wish them all well with the major refurb following the floods. Always call, always give my wishes, and look forward to the reopening.
What a grand visit to this pub with a selection of the Sheffield Brewery beers on offer and plenty more besides. Always a must when visiting Sheffield, and has got better. Good pub, good beers, good company.
Another MUST VISIT when in Sheffield. Fanatastic range of beer and even draught perry from Westons on my last visit. A little out of the way and the neighbourhood is a bit run down but it is a beacon of light. Miss this at your peril!
what an absolute dream of a pub, for a poncy southerner. i still dream about my visit to this quality public house. rubbing hands with anticipation of another visit....

Must be one of the best pubs in the city; a great range of beer, table football, and a small beer garden backing on to the River Don.
Another great pub not to be missed on a Sheffield crawl. Excellent beers and good company.
This is definitely one of the best pubs to finish off a crawl. Amongst two or three Timothy Taylor beers was a mild called "Twin City" from the Facer's brewery - perfectly balanced. The real treat was Wentworth's WPA, one of the most flavoursome beers I have tasted for a long time.
Thanks to all at the bar for their hospitality (allowing me to bring my bike in, etc) and to "Neil" for tolerating me and Martin's over-enjoyment of the beer.
This pub is a gem, and must be visited. NB: Euro currency is accepted in the pub. I cannot fathom why I only gave 8/10 in my last rating - this changes forthwith to a well-deserved 10/10. Keep it up!
Haven't been there in a while, but still my favourite pub. Friendly, fairly quiet (but not dead). Great beer (as mentioned - the Taylor Porter is divine, as well as the Belgian stuff). Spent many a pleasant afternoon / evening in there when I was working at a recording studio over the road. The Gardeners became Studio 2 for us.

This is an excellent pub. I was "touring" Sheffield pubs one evening when some locals took me here. It was a very pleasant surprise, I had the pleasue to imbibe not only excellent Taylor's Best, but some interesting guest beers as well. Everyone has a first class honours degree in friendliness making this pub all the more welcoming. Recommended!
Great atmosphere. The best Taylor's for miles. Eddy and Pat always very welcoming.

Friendly, backstreet pub tucked away in a semi-industrial area in about 1 mile north of the centre. Includes very small public bar and a patio. Good range of British Real Ales - try the very rare Taylor Porter (one of only 2 pubs in the country to sell this permanently)and those from the local Wentworth Brewery. Also sells good range of German and Belgian beers.
