Now called The Lordship. Lovely old battleship boozer building wise. Beer wise not that imaginative to be honest. Some Meantime on for the kids. A Truman's bitter on for those who can remember Compact Discs.

Now called The Patch - not yet re-opened

More of a restuarant than a pub now. Wouldn't recommend it for a beer, but it's good for an evening meal.

bertrand - 4 Sep 2008 18:13
full of plastic armchair premiership football fans who cant afford to go to games, but like to pretend they are both wealthy and knowlegable about football, when in fact they are full of the kind of stuff that comes out of a cows backside. The guinness is not great and would imagine it would taste the same as my cats litter should i ever decide to try and drink my cats litter.

hardboiledegg - 11 Dec 2007 16:56
Nice pub, unpretentious unlike some of their East Dulwich / Peckham rivals. Decent food, good quiz on a Sunday night (free sausages and chips for every participant!). Nice big screen too so good for sport.
shadowofthebeast - 26 Nov 2007 16:14
How much for a Baltika ?

4.50 !

I could get this in Kaliningrad for a about 4 pee.

Baltika prices aside, this isnt too bad a place. far enough up the lane to keep the verbose media types with their ironic haircuts and crocs, but not trendy enought to lure the estate agents in their cheap suits and bogus square toed shoes

Its certainly memorable, with the canary yellow paint job and upper LL position, just a lurch from the brutal grey concrete of the soon to be demolished East Dulwich cop shop.

Its more of a local than most, its location keeping it off the usual LL gastropub/winebar crawl route.

Its big enough inside to hold a few bodies, espcially when theyre showing Chelsea or another London Club, live on the big screen.

a gregarious mix of ABC types.Give it a go.

This is an absolutely wonderful establishment. Everyone involved here should be immensely proud of their achievements. I shall be recommending this place to the relevant authorities.

bertrand - 14 Aug 2007 17:43
a handy local but seems to lack a certain something . Food is great and u can watch it being cooked too !

tehers too many other stronger contenders in e d tho and its so lame when the doy boy chavs turn up for a footie game. Thats when we leave !
ben1972 - 21 Mar 2007 11:20
This place is good.
anonymous - 10 Sep 2006 11:35
Recently renovated (the yellow was something to get used to), it's a perfect place for a beer after work. The garden/terrace area at the back is perfect for summer evenings. Menu is limited on "bar food" but they make excellent pizzas!
anonymous - 17 Jul 2006 15:13
This pub used to have some brilliant bands in the 1970's - anyone remember them? Jeff Beck used to guest play with a band called Upp; Steve Waller and other superb session musicians
anonymous - 2 May 2006 19:42
yeah i'm with fishcox here - couldn't we have kept just one old-school sh1thole on the high street?

and i think potato wedge is what it's all about now my fishy friend
steveo500 - 18 Nov 2005 12:35
I love this pub. It is my favourite bar on Lordship Lane. The staff are cool, especially the chefs.
MerchantDriver - 26 Aug 2005 17:22
Any chance of Nachos on the menu - would have thought they would have gone down well given the groups and football crowd.
brittste - 22 Aug 2005 11:56
Miss the old Mag definately, and especially the comedy. Was kind of hoping they would bring it back when they re-opened as it was a real feature of our blooming neighbourhood! However, i think the decor is lovely, the staff are great and the pizza's rock!
charlottekm - 12 Aug 2005 12:23
My friends and I have been going in the Mag since it's reopening late last year. It has always been friendly, the beer and food selection are excellent and the decor is comfortable, if slightly bland. Lately however, I haev noticed that of a Friday and Saturday night ( not afternoon ). There have been children running around the garden and the pub. Maybe I'm being unrealistic but I think pubs full of half cut people realy aren't places for young children, as well as the smoke. Selfishly too, it tends to put a dampener on the evening when you come out for an evening's relaxation away from the kids only to have to put up with other people's. This is the only negative point I have for this bar but feel it is quite a significant one.
anonymous - 11 Jul 2005 14:14
Great pub. Do slightly miss the old style Mag, mostly for the jukebox, especially now the Foresters has closed.No-where to get a cheap pint in ED anymore (unless you trawl the scary back streets!) Impressed with the range of sport shown...have seen all the British n Irish Lions games here, even when it's just been me and the landlord. Nice friendly atmosphere, generous with the breakfast stuff at silly o'clock in the morning! Beer garden good addition. Have yet to try the sunday BBQ or quiz night, but sounds promising.
stacker - 27 Jun 2005 23:44
Just got better with the addition of a beer garden at the back!
anonymous - 18 Apr 2005 14:29
By the way i love the castle but i like the choice. I hope places like the castle stay "ungentrified" we need places like that for those that want them. Had mixed feelings when the Foresters went. Want E Dulwich to stay accessable for all! I dont want to live in Clapham. I prefer "hand cut" to french fries by the way. : )
brittste - 10 Apr 2005 19:42
for someone who lived in E Dulwich 9 years ago before it 'gentrified', i would agree with anonymous. I remember the only place that used to be decent to go for a drink (or a jug of sangria) was the mexican, and therefore wholely love the variety that e dulwich now offers. Lets not be negative after all we all benefit in the end as each chooses where they would like to go and if old boozers do it for you there are still a few around ( the castle ?) not quite my cup of tea but good if you want a cheap pint and like watching sports so I'm told. For the record, think Magdala is great, good priced food and lovely friendly staff, which is what i look for in a local place
brittste - 10 Apr 2005 19:38
Lose the chip ? Lose the chip ? I am proud to say that I have had this chip for a long time, and dont intend to lose it. I'm surprised 'anonymous' that being a new Dulwichian, of the Eastern variety, that you dont accuse people of having a 'French Fry' on their shoulder.

I just happen to remember East Dulwich in the old days, and, to be honest, preferred it then.
fishcox - 8 Apr 2005 22:24
I had a couple of pints of Broadside here on Saturday night, excellent beer by Adnams.I thought the place was ok, if a little bit too bright. The thing about a revamped pub is that it takes a few years to wear in.
bertramr - 4 Apr 2005 18:11
Hmm. Not bad, but a bit of a disappointment when you know it's the same owners as the Palmerston and Sea Cow. Good for the football I guess as everyone can see that huge screen and enjoy burgers n pizzas watching Chelsea wallop whoever they are playing...
christopher - 19 Feb 2005 11:38
What are you talking about??? The food is great and very reasonably priced. Great thin and crispy Pizza. The burger is great and a great big serving. This is the best pub in Dulwich by a country mile. The staff are friendly, the wine is great and the place is clean and warm. What more do you guys want? And lose the chip -"pretentious Dulwichites" - what does that mean anyway. "has now been tarted up for the new gentrified East Dulwich" - my erse! Its been given a new lease of life more like. The old Magdala was nothing short of a sh1thole!
anonymous - 18 Feb 2005 16:40
I agree with Fishcox that the 'old' Magdala used to used to be a proper old boozer and I loved it when I first moved to Dulwich about 7 years ago but towards the end it really did cross the line between 'old-boozer charm' and 'scummy'. As it's about a 30-second walk from my front door I was very pleased when it reopened but agree with some of the comments about lack of soul but hopefully it will improve when it gets some regulars rather than just pretentious Dulwichites. I'm hoping the food will improve too because it sounds good on the menu (eg. Pumpkin and speck pizza with chilli) but doesn't quite deliver at the moment. The booths are a nice touch and big enough to fit a decent group into.
BoozyGirl - 28 Jan 2005 12:31
this pub is very much like the EDT at the other end of the lane. it is better because of the food and it's more comfy too many kids at the weekend though.
anonymous - 25 Jan 2005 18:38
If you like the 'standardisation' of pubs, then this is right up your street. Used to be a proper old 'boozer' but has now been tarted up for the new gentrified East Dulwich. Only been in at lunchtime, and the beer was excellent. In the evening I could imagine the locals pretending they were acting out an episode of 'Friends'. Ugh.
fishcox - 23 Jan 2005 19:56
Lovely now its refurbished, not that I went to old one ever, so can't compare.

Haven't tried the food yet, but everything else seems in order.
dank4000 - 18 Jan 2005 15:57
The newly refurbished Magdala is a great improvement on the old one, although the wood fired pizzas need some more work done on them. A good place to watch the footie too
Cassius - 23 Dec 2004 09:53
fantastic evening, great beer, really enjoyed myself
pilot - 22 Aug 2004 17:03
It is no longer open.
Lin Henden - 8 Jun 2004 16:09
Any time drinking in this pub is spent wondering how long you'll be there before the walls fall down around you.

Shithole. 'Nuff said.

Ali - 28 Feb 2004 06:40
Rugged, handsome, building with the feel of the good old EastEnd. C'est Magnifique!
Pierre Boursinlait - 3 Jan 2004 13:23
cracking local, with the dulwich comedy club and quiz night. cheap, good ale. superb 'bookcase effect' decor. the landlord is a star.
