This is the worst pub I have ever been in. The place was filthy beyond environmental healths standards even, there were live wires poking out of the wall, the staff behind the bar were completely self absorbed and the regulars left a lot to be desired. To venture off the normal watford path to this pub would be a feat anyway, trust me, this place is not worth it. It is a pit.

Under new management, with a push for the House music scene now under way.

I dont know if it has slowly reverted to type in the two years since it re-opened but I called in recently and struggled to see much different to the old Mad George and before days. Putting some art for sale on the walls doesnt really make much difference. Beer was OK but I dont imagine they turn over too much. Prices seem to be based on what they want to be rather than what they are.

my work collegue has described this place as a 'dingy dungeon' with stupidly expensive beers and a granny tune loving DJ 'have a quiet word with yourself before entry' I QUOTE

I like the concept of this place but it just needs some tweaking here and there.

I agree with an earlier poster, the staff need to be 100% customer driven - seeing bar staff chatting to their mates etc when you are waiting to be served is a golden NO-NO in anyones book.

The range of beers is better than most and the menu, although limited, seemed to be diverse enough as did the food menu.

But there's one problem that kind of troubles me... it's just a little bit too elitist for my liking.

You get the sense that if you are not quite wearing something vaguely fashionable, you will look out of place here... and that's a shame as pubs should really be for all and sundry.

That aside, a half decent half grown up bar that would probably do a little bit better if it wasnt out of the way so much, nevertheless well worth a visit.

Can't moan really... it's an atmospheric improvement from it's predecessor I can assure you.

This could be a really nice pub, but suffers from being too try hard when it's not busy. Really should put it's customers first, especially if it's to justify the prices it charges.

Examples (over various visits);
- cranking up music so loud on Sunday night conversation was impossible, and skipping through CD tracks, cutting the songs off halfway through etc... irritating as hell
- having to wait 5 minutes at the bar whilst the barman finished chatting to his mate (there was no-one in front of me)
- running out of basic drinks on a Saturday night
- musicians making sarky comments if you pop outside for a cigarette

The bar itself looks great though, and heard the food is good! Also, had a couple of good weekend nights in here when it was busy and good DJ's / bands on.

This place is a shame. It could be so good and a real shot in the arm for Watford the decor is great and the theoretical range of drinks is interesting...BUT last time I was in there they had a folk night and they had run out of draught bitters. There was Leffe and Hoegaarden available but the young barmen thought these were lagers. People don't mind paying premium prices premium beer and premium service but paying 4 for a shoddy beer, served shoddily is not the way forward. You've got a great venue guys, TRAIN YOUR STAFF!

Used to be a dodgy locals joint but now taken over by the people behind the much-missed Taylor's Bar. It's been there since may but it took me a chance stroll by to notice it. It's small by the amience is relaxing and there's something good on every night. Compared to the old Taylor's it's perhaps a bit more adult (not such a bad thing - Taylor's was sometimes filled with just-old-enough anti-fit jeans'n'floppy fringed scenester-kids some nights) and, dare I say it, 'trendy' - I've heard live and DJed acid-jazz type stuff when I've been in there. On Thursday there's a laid-back open mic night by Harmonica Lewinsky, which is worth a visit.
Oh, and they have Spitfire and Green King so you can get a decent ale. One lunch I popped in for a gourmet burger and it was of high quality.
As a beer fan a few more ales would be nice but that's nit-picking - it's a great alternative to what Watford currently offers.
