if you like sport, this is the pub to go to in Putney, loads of TVs. Ale OK, nothing more as was the food. Devoid of the local rich playthings & a normal pub.
|
Very popular with people who like to watch football on the tv when they go to a pub. Beer is Gk including IPA which is never that exciting.
|
Not a bad little pub, but there was a few yobs being sick in the corner after drinking a few shandys
|
"Manager?" with a very poor attitude. All 3 real beers were off. Generally made to feel like we a nuisance. We made our excuses and left.
|
Visited a couple of times in the last few weeks. Mainly for the sport. Not the greatest pub in Putney but acceptable. Nice and clean, an enthusiastic manager, plenty of satisfied customers.
|
Have been using this pub for 5 or 6 years now on at least a once weekly basis and never noticed place smelling of piss if I had I wouldn't have been back. Excellent prices for the area fosters, john smiths, strongbow and I think even guiness all under 3 reasonable food all served quickly and eficently recently had refit and renamed Fox and Hounds.
|
Good for a friday night out on the lash. Go in with more expectations than that and you will be sorely disappointed.
This pub's raison d'etre is to get the hard working office staff of Putney plastered on any given evening thus ensuring billions of pounds lost to the economy due to hangovers. Take it from someone who knows...
Apart from the ubiquitous Chelsea fans , it's not a bad place.
|
Avoid the mens toilets - the worst for miles around and not changed in at least the last 3 years. And on that basis, I would avoid the food - it's unlikely to have one good department with another so bad. Bar staff OKish. Seating areas poor. Outside area at the back (especially around BBQ) even worse than the toilets. Stick to one quick glass then a quick exit. Very much the bottom end of Putney offerings.
|
has improved a bit but this used to be a destination pub years ago and now it's just somewhere to watch football. such a wasted opportunity as the space, layout and location should make this a top boozer.
bar staff still pleasant but thick as short planks.
|
A damn good looking football team play out of this pub, apparently...
|
I used to go there a while back, but moved out of London. I went back a couple of days ago- still cheap great beer, the bar staff are all friendly and very attractive girls (the manager must be happy with that), the bathroom still smells like piss but that is the only bad part.
|
This is one to avoid if you in Putney. Nasty food, toilets have buckets underneath the urinals. Not a good atmosphere.
|
Busy last night for the football, although most weren't drinking anything and left as soon as the game finished. No Ale on, even though the handpumps indicated it should have been. Attractive bar staff, not enough to reccommend repeat visit. Beer lovers should go over the road to the Railway.
|
Three words.... nasty nasty nasty. The number of bouncers at the door should give you an indication of their customer base.
|
Pretty rough!
|
Good placet. Only use after work for a quick pint rather the weekend so don't know about Frid/Sat/Sun and avoid big match events - but I'm sure it's great if you want that atmosphere. Big enough place with beer garden and variety of seating. Bar staff work hard and are always friendly. Some of the more moody bar maids from the Slug might come here and be trained/observe.
|
I had a really fab night in here last friday- it was really buzzy, the bar staff were friendly and were having a good laugh the music was really loud and it was packed. also they're house wine is a a fiver a bottle you cant go wrong!! the toilets were..interesting i saw 2 girls fighting and 1 being sick, but i guess i wasnt surprised. the barman was so sexy so i will definatley be going back!! if you want a fun nyt, resonably priced and totty behind the bar this is the place!!!!! xxxxxxxxxx
|
This place is perfect for watching the football as it has loads of screens and plenty of room to sit and stand. Im not sure that Id bother any other time though as the Pride and Bombardier lines get cleaned together and the place has a Barracuda Ltd feel to it.
|
Great pub for a pre-match drink, only 10 mins from East Putney underground to the Bridge, & j p r the pub is not full of banned chelsea fans, most who drink in there follow the blues all over the country & europe, though i did hear it was pretty liveley in there champions league final night!
|
pub has got ALOT beter with the new manager
|
Have been in here 5 or 6 times since moving to putney, but will not go back.
Clientelle consists of Chelsea fans that are 'banned from going to the football these days so come in here' and generally mope about in the beer garden. If you support any other london team, then keep it to yourself.
Bar staff seem completely disinterested and unprofessional. food service is appalling. Slow and cold or microwaved to the point where the plate burns to the touch.
the only saving graces of this venue are the fact that you can see the football from pretty much anywhere in the pub, and it serves alcohol. the front half of the pub is scented heavily by the filthy toilets.
A shame, as Putney is crying out for a quality boozer where people can watch the football without any hassle.
|
the new manger is a fitty
|
Can be a bit "lively" at the weekend. Real ale is usually either gone or a bit lumpy by Monday night. Used to have a really good and popular quiz on Mondays but that's disappeared (2008).
|
i last posted a review about the fox 18months ago and my feelings are still the same.it is still the best pub in putney and with the regulars discount card its also one of the cheapest.what some of the idiots that have criticised the pub dont seem to realise is that the fox is a local pub where locals go to drink and chat.what do they want to see in a pub a load of toffed up ponces drinking wine,if they want that then go to a wine bar.as far as the staff are concerned if you want to be treated with respectthen show some to them.i have personally seen some of the staff being talked to like second hand citizens by so called customers and if i was working behind the bar some of those customers would be wearing their drinks and not drinking them.oh and by the way i am a 55yr old regular user of the pub and not one of the staff that spend all of their time writing reviews to this site,i am in the fox most days if only for a few hrs at a time and i am in full time employmentand not a giro spender.anyway to finish off all i want to say to anybody who reads these reviews, please dont take too much notice of the bad reviews you have read on this site ang try the pub yourself TAFFY

The first time I went in this pub, I thought it was a good discovery. The next time I made the mistake of ordering food, and we received three cold meals. It was really busy so I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and ordered food the next time, and my chilli was the largest pile of rice I have possibly ever seen, two beans, and a forkful of meat. And cold to boot. I know it's not exactly a fancy place to eat, but seriously! Resolving to never eat there again, even while drunk, I went in simply for a drink. Two members of staff, literally three feet away in ful view, looked directly at us and yet carried on talking for so long that we literally went to the Railway. Can I add how much I hate the Railway? And yet, it was the better option... Don't waste your time on this dump.
anonymous - 14 Nov 2007 02:46 |
they've errected a fixed gazebo in the garden for us smokers - outside TV's too.
Very slowly getting better, but still undermanaged.
|
Used to be a decent pub aeons ago.
|
its good when you get a seat and there playing decent music, they do always seems to have a lack of toilet paper which always annoys me but by my 6th pint i suppose i couldnt care less. Still the people in there on a Friday are all up for a laugh, the people that come down on a Saturday all seem to think there in covent garden sipping pink champagne, i prefer the railway myself, lol
|
Worst pub in Putney. This used to be an all-round nice place. New management and the migration of railway clients have now made this a chav-hell hole. The Staff are rude as hell and don't give a monkeys. It's full of toothless giro spenders and 70's throwbacks. If you read the reviews you can see the steadily decline of what was once a great after work haunt and occasional talent spotting haven.
Also beware dubious "it's a great place" comments. Maybe the reason there are no staff is because they are all out back posting comments in this site!!!
The food is pre-packaged sh*te and the drinks are expensive even for putney.
Pick a pub, any other pub in putney - you'll have a better evening.
|
What a total shithole - full of dumbarse chavs. Gets even worse when Chelsea are playing and all these waste DNAbags storm my suburb. Luckily this hell hople captures the majority of them and prevents them polluting pubs where human beings go.
Oh wait, spoke to soon - they have already ruined the White Horse...
Avoid like the plague
|
One of the worst bars in Putney because of the clientele, and the fact that the management do nothing to improve the situation. You'll be fine if you like wearing shell suits on a saturday night out, bellowing football chants as loud as possible, and/or punching people.
On the plus side it does keep the aforementioned people away from the more upmarket bars further down the highstreet.
anonymous - 9 Apr 2007 12:57 |
Pretty good all round pub, late license and reasonable beer. Definitely one of the better places to drink in Putney.
Some good live music on Thursdays as well.
anonymous - 2 Apr 2007 09:58 |
hmmm there are better places. If you fancy skinting yourself while having a ruck then come here on a saturday afternoon.
|
gotta love the bouncers!!!
anonymous - 29 Jan 2007 16:27 |
hmmm, bar staff seem to be changing. there's some new cocky brummie behind the bar who thinks he knows everything but obviously doesn't. very rude and annoying and considering im a regular customer its not a good impression to be made.
glad to see my girls are still there! the always polite lucy and ella are great when they're working together, always seem to be having a laugh and are plesant to customers. makes the trip to the pub after work a good one even if you've had a bad day. smiles all around and a bit of banter, just what i like. the new guy needs to take a tip from these girls!
all in all a good pub to be in, great to watch any sport, have a beer and chill out in!
anonymous - 27 Jun 2006 02:09 |
Nice enough bar at most times but avoid when the football club that plays in blue nearby is on the big screens. Tonight we were serenaded by some fairly sickening racist and anti-Semitic chanting which the bar staff did nothing to discourage.
anonymous - 17 Apr 2006 20:28 |
Not a bad pub at all. Incredibly bright though. I don't think my pupils have ever been so large...
|
louib79 - He's a Newcastle fan!!
|
This pub is a little treasure. It is the type of place you can go and watch a football match on your own and then go along the next night with some friends for a nice drink. Food is better now they have changed the menu and actually quite resonable. Drinks are slightly expensive but you expect that in Putney anyway. What is up with the depressed bar man though? The rest of the team are great they need to sort him out.
|
This pub is fine - obviously a little dear but I've enjoyed a few nights down there with workmates. Shame there's no ales but I can live with the odd lager. Can't say I've had any problems with the barstaff - one of the guys looks a bit depressed but the others are friendly and the two girls I've seen behind the bar have both been lovely (even though they couldn't help me on the pub quiz!)
|
Worth a visit ot watch sporting events but it does get rammed.....not the most comfy of pubs, more like a bar, lack seating, rubbish beers....adequate food. Probably Putney's best venue for sport, until the new Walkabout (urghhhh) gets going at the bottom of the high street.
|
Super place, recommend it to anyone new to Putney!
|
Great quiz on a monday
|
Good place to watch football. The bar staff need to be more friendly, or failing that, not rude would be nice...
|
Agree with a lot of what's been said below. OK for watching the sport during the daytime, but I wouldn't bother drinking there during the evening. Food and bogs awful. Staff considerably worse than that. Hey, you're not being forced to work there, are you? If old-fashioned values like politeness, putting the customer first and providing a decent service don't suit you, consider getting a job working on the railway.
|
staffed by ignorant New World types, yet another good pub in Putney killed off by people who don't have a clue how a pub works.
Wasted opportunity.
anonymous - 29 Aug 2005 14:46 |
The toilets have to be the worst I have ever seen, can't believe it had a refurb last Xmas, this used to be the best place on the High Street, gone way way down hill since the old management team left
|
Good place to watch sport, however if you fancy a drink try elsewhere as the staff are slow and always appear hungover.
BenEd - 25 Jul 2005 14:17 |
I've been going in this pub for a few years now as i work down the road so i have seen a fair bit of this pub. it has had a bit of a rocky time of late, this is as the new manager has come in. they have got a new chef so the food has improved, but that wouldn't have been hard at all. As for the bar staff, kirsty and lucy are great and not rude, however some of the guys can be when u catch them on the wrong days. i think the major problem here tho is that they are aleways running out for things, there's always something not available, but this would be down to the management, not the staff. give this place a go, you might enjoy it.
|
Another London pub which seems to be obsessed with sport on TVs and hiring rude staff. they also like to charge 3 for their lager.
|
This pub has truely gone to pot. The staff are the worst in London!! The big South African is without doubt the most miserable git ever to have set foot in England. He hates his job. Handing a pint ove actually hurts him. Two saving graces Kirsty the English bar girl and Mike the doorman a legend in the world of doormen. Get rid of the crap bar staff and return this pub back to a goodun.
|
The male staff at the Fox clearly do have an attitude problem, and I sincerely doubt they are aware of the reputation they have as an unfriendly pub. As is usually the case, this unfriendlyness spills out onto the other side of the bar, with groups of arsey builders giving "wotchoo-lookin-at" faces as you walk in. An uneasy atmosphere, a bland, far too brightly lit decor, and worst of all a rude, arrogant manager. Much better pubs in the area.
|
The pub is 'almost' pleasant on the eye. The staff generally are sub standard. The beer is average, for what it costs.
|
Hmm.. bit of a debate going on here. An element of truth from both sides. The (bar)staff are generally fine, with the exception of one monosyllabic South Afrcan who is aloof, arrogant and rude. The manager is fine. The beer isn't that expensive (whichever prole wants to go to the Railway is welcome to it) - bear in mind that this is Putney after all - and is pretty good (best Heineken in London and yeah I know it's chav juice but sometimes only ice cold lager will do.) The only real criticism is that the food is unutterably terrible. So bad it's almost worth ordering just to laugh at it. Still, as a Saturday lunchtime destination to watch the footie/warm up before nipping down to Twickenham it's prety reliable.
|
the fox is a good pub, the staff are pleasant, and the atmosphere is usually good, and more importantly in the society we live in now the fox is a safe pub.i am disgusted with some of the comments that has been posted about the staff.i have always found the staff of the pub to be very friendly and polite including the south african staff, the manager is certainly no 4ft idiot as someone who posted that comment clearly is,the doormen that work on fridays and saturdays nights are the best in the business and there is never any problems they cant handle and they rarely,if at all have to resort to using muscle to sort out a problem.i also have to say that the fox is not the dearest pub in putney, whoever posted thet comment hasnt used all the pubs in the area, all in all THE FOX in putney is a pub where you will get a good welcome, friendly staff and customers and very importantly a good pint.so come along and see for yourself and please dont believe all the rubbish that you may have read about the fox,
taffy - 31 May 2005 19:14 |
Honestly, this place could be brilliant but it's let down horrendously by its arrogant, ignorant staff.
This place also charges extortionate rates for drinks and for that extra price all you get is attitude from the south african staff. There used to be an Irish bar manager who knew how to look after his customers, but he has gone and instead there is a 4ft, short haired, monosyllabic idiot "in charge" and is clearly making a balls up.
Also the music they have is far too loud, maybe they are trying to make up for what the place lacks in customer service with music volume.
Clearly all the comments on here that say they like the place and "the staff are great" are the managers or staff themselves trying to paint a pretty picture. The truth is if you're unfortunate enough to go here that you'll be treated like crap and pay a premium for it.
Raise two fingers to these idiots until they learn how to look after their paying customers (beyond the myriad of south african travellers who smell awful and seem unable to use the toilets without spraying urine over the floors and adding some 'hilarious' nazi or anti-semitic graffiti on the walls)
like the other reviewers with sense say - go over the road to the Railway (pints are AT LEAST 1 cheaper) and the staff at least know how to treat customers with a basic level of human respect.
The south african staff need to realise that Apartheid is not an effective means of customer service. Over here we treat our fellow human beings with some level of common decency and respect.
Quite a rant - used to love the place but it's slumped dramatically since the management changed.
anonymous - 28 Apr 2005 23:56 |
DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB! The bar staff are some of the rudest and most obnoxious people I've ever met, and have IQs the level of an amoeba. They also can't speak a word of English (they are all South African travellers). The place has no commercial awareness and the staff are disinterested in their job. The crowd they attract can be a bunch of chav scumbags (it's a Fez club warm up place).
Go to Jolly Gardener or the Railway instead - much more pleasant atmosphere.
|
What has happened to this pub, I used this pub for three years as it was by far and away the best pub in the area.I return to Putney to see some friends, as I now live elsewhere, and it has managed to become one of the worst. The toilets are disgusting - o seats, no locks and covered in grafiti. The service is now non existent and the atmosphere was nasty - what used to be a pub with the best looking girls in town is now just full of blokes looking for a row. I tink I may drink in the Railway on my next visit to Putney and I can't believe it has come to that - a crying shame.
anonymous - 18 Apr 2005 21:36 |
the fox is great! bar staff are fantastic, lucy the barmaid rocks and is well cute, i go there every weekend in hope...! spanish tony is cool, yeh a bit of a nutter but he brings life to the pub! new manager in so its a lot better than it used to be! doormen are pretty cool guys too. everyone should go to the fox! im there every friday and saturday nite!
anonymous - 22 Feb 2005 01:17 |
All in all not a bad pub but wouldn't be rushing back too quickly. Also be aware to the Swing band every second Thursday night - TERRIBLE
michelle - 15 Nov 2004 12:56 |
Recently refurbished - now pretty much a Sports Bar with a multitude of TVs, so doubtless a good place to watch the footie. Beer is OK - no real beers though, food menu looks pretty formulaic but prices are reasonable. The Barca fan is a bit of a pain in the proverbial - and that was on a Monday eve when there wsn't a game on! Still, one of the better pubs in Putney (but let's face it that isn't hard considering the competition!)
Mr lash - 9 Nov 2004 09:47 |
This pub has a great friendly atmosphere compare to some of the other pubs in Putney. Staff are great.
Allan - 13 Sep 2004 12:00 |
I met the lunatic guy too and I can confirm he really is out of his head If you fancy some REAL abuse then go when England is playing and make sure he knows you're English or support them anyway...he'll come up to you with a badge stating "it could be worse, I could be English!. Hes a real entertainer in that pub.
Luigi - 6 Sep 2004 14:01 |
Worth going to on a Sunday evening when the Spanish Football is on as their is a lunatic Barcalona fan complete with flag, own pint glass and doll (that gives him predictions apparantly). My mate was at the cash machine across the road and could hear this nutter when Barca look the lead against Real Madrid last night. Wear a Real Madrid shirt if you fancy some real abuse!
Gary - 26 Apr 2004 08:08 |
Was a good pub once, now filled with a boring aussie etc feel make it a british pub again
rog - 18 Apr 2004 16:12 |
Handy for Falafel King, and used to have a good band on a Thursday night - Strange In Places, I think. Are they still going?
AussieDavo - 26 Mar 2004 13:49 |
Used to be a great pub before it was renovated to fit in with all the other crap pubs in Putney. A dive. OK if you like drinking slops and can put up with the wannabe 'sports' pub atmosphere.
|
Big barman Ade is a legend. Tip him generously.
Morgs - 15 Apr 2003 14:50 |
Best after-work pub in Putney. Young, vibrant, friendly, good service, chilled out clientele. Need to be there in good time to make use of the late licence as entry policy becomes mroe fastidious as the evenings wear on
Fred - 8 Apr 2003 11:22 |
Best atmosphere for rugby I,ve found. Great staff who serve quickly and actually seem to be enjoying themselves. Nice line in grub too.
maurice - 22 Mar 2003 11:06 |
No.1 for sport. Some 8 or 9 screens so you never miss a moment even when you go to get another pint. Decent food too.
Greg - 23 Feb 2003 13:24 |
Has a late licence on Friday and Saturday.
Gary - 3 Feb 2003 08:00 |
Good for rugby if you get there early enough. Good draught beer. Hmmm Beeer.
Olly - 16 Dec 2002 13:41 |
Loads of screens, but loads of people. Generally alright, lots more potential than it actually uses. Could probably do with some decent management.
Chris - 6 Sep 2002 16:27 |
It's the best pub I've been in to watch the football. I have never stood in a pub and been able to see from anyware I stand. FANTASTIC
