Good traditional boozer, close to the City Centre without being on top of it. Worth seeking out, three/four ales on, mine was in very good nick

Great place to sample good food and decent ale while your friends do a bit of God Bothering at the Cathedral. All beers were good and the Fish and Chips was excellent.

Relaxing friendly pub for a beer or two.

Still a good pub for Kentish ales, Gadds #5, Canterbury Ales Knights Tale, Incuubus & a Wantsum beer were the selection on offer when I visited. recently. The music on the jukebox is varied and the service is quick and friendly. There was a nice mix of customers on my visit. A no frills pub you see what you get.

Stopped by here in the afternoon for a couple of pints of Gadd's Dr Sunshine.
Nice pub, quick & attentive service. Good music at just the right volume.
Good place to go for unusual local Kent ales.
|
Nice little pub that did 4 or 5 local Kent ales....all good and all for 3. All beers were unusual, although I do remember Green Demon and She Sells Sea Shells as being two of them. Certainly worth a visit.

Very good choice of unusual ales. Food good too!

And oh how they dance, those little children of Stone Henge!

Hopefully they where just having a bad day. Refused my first pint as it resembled milk, this can happen a beer gets to the end of barrel unnoticed barman went to change barrel, pulled some through then replaced my pint saying as it was a pale beer it would take time to clear. Clearly either he had not pulled enough through or the new barrel had not had time to settle as the replacement was still not right but I gave it a go my wifes beer was clear but tasted very stale we did not finish them and will not be returning.

A small city centre pub with a reverse L shaped bar. Four ales on - two regulars and two changeable ones. I tried the Old Dairy Red top and the Whitstable IPA both of which were well kept and in good nic. It is rumoured that the arch-bishop drops in for an odd quaff of ale now and then.

Visited last Friday, a haven in the centre of tourist choked Caterbury, great beer selection served in good condition. Only complaint, ordered home cooked ham egg and chips and got 3 thin slices of preformed supermarket 'ham', absolute rubbish and very poor value for money.Keep to the beer and you wont go far wrong. I'll rate it as 7 on the beer quality alone.

in here after kent beer festival, found the landlord good and his whitstable ipa very nice.
|
A very affable and pleasant town pub, benefiting from considerable passing trade which yields a good mix of punters. 4 excellent cask ales are offered, including Hopdaemon and Whitstable brews. In Summer the Bell has much-needed additional seating outdoors where one can quite happily watch the world go by. A solid, unpretentious, well-run house that comes highly recommended, by me at any rate.

The previous review shows how one person with no inter personal skills (known as a miserable git up north) can put people off a place. I visited the place last week and was bowled over by the quality of the beer, but above all the chatty, knowledgable and welcoming staff behind the pumps. A young bloke and and even younger lady were a good example of how customer service should be - so landlord, ask them to give you some training!!
The Whitstable IPA I particularly enjoyed and was pleased to see a Franziskaner Wheat Beer font (my favourite of the "available" wheat beers over here) though I didn't sample any. Take note abut customer service comments Mr. Landlord!

The pub itself sells a range of lovely wines and real ales, its surroundings are warm and cosy and one would assume a lovely place to be, and this is true if you can avoid any form of contact with the manager/ owner. Run by a rude, obnoxious, and unprofessional baffon!! I would recommend this pub to anyone who enjoys their own company, or equally anyone who enjoys being mocked and humiliated by a man with absolutely no acceptable social skills. He hates anyone under the age of 50 years, so I would probably avoid taking the children too... Really is a shame when one person ruins the whole environment.... change the management and Ill definatley go back!

I thought this pub had gone downhill a year or so ago but it seems to have returned to form again. Bare floorboards, a great jukebox and a selection of three local ales. A small no frills pub but one that has character. Good view of the cathedral too!
|
I thought this to be the best pub in Canterbury, the beers were in great nick and an interesting range, the atmosphere very pleasant and it was great to sit out the front. All in all, very pleasant.
|
Popped in here for q quick couple of pints on bank holiday Monday a few days ago. All the cask ales were all local, they had Gadds No.3, Whitstable Bitter, Whitstable IPA and Hopdeamon Incubus. I tried the Gadds and the IPA, both on very good form.
Nice pub, also great for sitting outside and "people watching" on a sunny day.
|
Spent a pleasant hour in there a week ago last Saturday, nattering to two of the hostesses from the Pullman special that was in Canterbury for the weekend.
Whitstable I.P.A. was on good form, but I was disappointed that the other ale was Ruddles Best. The service was good, the pub is clean and worth a visit if you find yourself in Palace Street.
6/10.
