The Last Post is the local Wetherspoons.
As ‘Spoons’ go it’s not too bad. They have some great beers on at very reasonable prices, sometimes as low as £1.99 a pint.
Expect the smell of chips and vinegar to hit you as soon as you walk in.

Dull as Wetherspoons go. Cheap beer, but bored-looking customers, and ladies' loo was basic and smelly.
|
It's the usual JD mixture of good, cheap food and drink plus unmotivated staff. Apart from breakfast and lunch time, the clientele is standard JD mix of local low-life, unemployed, alcoholics and (at night) kids determined to get drunk on the cheap.
How is it that all Wetherspoons seem to have a couple of scruffy customers with seventies hair styles, wearing shell suits and often with B.O. way off the Beaufort scale. Are they paid to tour the pubs ? Or maybe they're paid by other pubs to leave !
|
Its a great little pub, filled with famlies, and charming old boys during the day and a fun younger crowd at night. Its always busy friday nights so may take a while to get served, but with prices so cheap who cares?? Staff are always friendly and a good laugh.
I like the food, they have great value meals, they also have an amazing steak night, curry club, and they do sunday roasts just like my mum makes.
The only down side... Gents toilets stink, to be fair it is an old pub.
|
Pretty much your typical Wetherspoons. Not much in the way of atmosphere, but a decent cheap pub nonetheless. The Guinness is good, there's a great selection of ales and the food is generally edible. The bar staff are friendly until 11pm when suddenly there's nothing worse to them than drinking slowly. A good place for you to start the night in before going elsewhere.

I found the governor in here to be a friendly chap and there were five ales available alongside a standard draught range that were all available at reasonable prices.
There are a couple of plasma screens that were showing a muted Sky Sports feed, not that anyone was watching it.
If youre a fan of Wetherspoons youll like this place.

Pay your money- take your choice , at 99p for a decent pint of Greene King IPA I won`t complain about the permanent huddle of smokers at the entrance nor the state of the toilets.
|
Plus side - The drinks are cheap. Staff are occassionally medicated pre-shift so you do get a smile now and then.
Down sides -
You can wait up to 20 minutes to get served due to the weekly changing staff needing to take their post-lobotomy medication.
I asked for half a pint of Kronenburg today and got it in a pint glass, they're THAT gormless.
The loud clans of old men hording the centre of the pub 24/7 with mouths like sewers need sorting out.
I've several times seen children being served in there.
No decent smoking area, making us all stand out the front door squeezed between the building and the rail making other people coming in and out of the pub breathe our smoke is very cramped and unpleasant for them and us.
Fire exits - One leads into a very narrow alley containing wall to wall brambles so it's either get ripped to pieces or burn alive if there's a fire. The other leads onto a suitably empty area for a smoking zone which for some reason is not used as one.
The chef needs shooting. I had an absoltetly vile chicken bap there the other day and threw up when I got home. The burgers aren't so bad though. Staff tend to leave the food sent down in the lift in there until it's just about cold enough to serve, this is apparently how they've been trained. Don't bother asking for it being heated up or replaced as this will take another 30-45 minutes and a refund is only offerred if you don't have time to wait.
NEVER order Guinness there unless you have a taste for raw sewage. Too many Bitters and not enough Beers.
The toilets are just filth, I'd imagine better amenities in a Cambodian prison.
Apart from that it's a 'delightful' place, especially on a monday night when it turns into a college mess room.

I visited this pub on Thursday, 19 July between 11.20 am and 5.00 pm. First impressions were that it was on the small side and rather cluttered with furniture.
The guest ales on offer were rather limited with the best being 'Old Peculier'. The other 2 were 'Stones' and 'Brew XI'. These 2 were so weak and pretty tasteless that a glass of water would have been preferable! These 2 beers can be bought at 1.39 a pint if you have a voucher from the recently issued JDW advertising newsletter. So obviously the company wanted a very cheap beer so that their profits would not suffer too much!! As well as these the old faithfuls of Abbott, Spitfire, etc were available.
By 1.00 pm the pub was packed with office workers coming in for lunch. I would hate to see this pub on a Friday or Saturday night as there is very little room to move.
The worst part was the gent's toilets. 3 urinals so close together you would be lucky if 2 thin people could use them at the same time. The third one is virtually useless as part of the access to it is blocked by the condom machine. When it's busy I imagine the washbasins must get used!!
According to the manager this is the busiest JDW pub for its size.
Having said all this, the staff were very friendly and pleasant. The food was of a good standard and served quickly.
However, because of its size, lack of room and inadequate toilets I would not venture back.

This is a great pub, it was my local for a good five years and me and my mates loved it and my mates still go there. it has i great selection of ales, like all jdw do, lovely during the day with all your old boys and lively at evering, specially on a firday and saturday. i miss the pub loads.

Time to dust off them student memories and bring them here... Cuz it feels like u are one spendin a friday nite in The Last Post. JD format is followed well with tables n chairs getting in the way to the loo and quiz n fruit machines. Bar is big... but lack of "working" staff lets it down so be sure to book you taxi 20 to 30 mins later than planned... Lovely carpet designs, Good crisp Lighting, and handy railing outside to stop u being run over in the high road makes this pub a solid 7.

Went in there today and had a very nice pint of Butcombe Gold. The bermaid was not the usual Wetherkid but an older and much more friendlier person. She even offered me a taster(of the beer unfortunately)which i thought was very good as i didn't even ask for it.Seemed to be better that your average jd.

Not a good spoons. Service is painfully slow (though friendly) due to obvious staffing issues. Too small, always crowded. Unbearable in the evening, I got several menacing looks for my failure to dress in Reekbok Classics and addidas trousers. Don't bother.

its cool, young people can get smashed in this friendly environment.

Seems if you don't know a member of staff, it can take anywhere up to 30 minutes to get served.

Us locals are served quicker, too right! Good pub and as John said Friendly, the only trouble is that it is small.
I think its more a place to go before you're drunk elsewhere. Cheap as Chip :p

The Post seems to of gone down hill of the last couple of years. The staff seem to change every week and are getting younger, a few are under age!. The staff have got ruder, you can wait up to 20 minutes to get served while the staff chat to there friends and serve the locals. The staff also cant pour pints, Ive had to wait while members of staff call over other members of staff as they cant pour a pint!. Wetherspoons please sort this pub out!!!.

Like the last comment said, the Last Post used to be a pub. This really does show, there is naff all room. I agree with the comments that the staff are slow to serve, they reall do take their time.

This pub used to be a post office & it shows, there is not room in this pub. If you don't get there before 7.30 then you can't move. The staff are slow to serve you & locals get served first no matter how long i've been waiting.
Martin Knight - 5 Jun 2004 17:11 |
I agree with the last comment, the staff do take forever to serve you. I have been to better pubs in Loughton and there are much better Wetherspoon pubs around.
Jason Paine - 2 Apr 2004 19:32 |
Not the best pub in Loughton. The staff take along time ro serve you. The pub is dirty and is not that friendly. There are better Wetherspoons and better pubs in loughton.
Lee Roberts - 2 Apr 2004 18:31 |
By far the best pub in Loughton. Small friendly, you would never feel out of place at anytime. Staff great, food good, beer great cheapest place around. So cheap you can afford to go back the next day. Always good for a laugh. Pity about the black board.

a nice pub a little on the small side however. so seating is a problem. still a good place to go and not worry about anything especially how much you spend

Best pub in Loughton. Cheapest, and caters for all types. You don't have to dress up to go there and the curries on Thursday are wicked. Get a booth and get drunk. The only problem is that it's quite small (especially the toilets) and so gets crowded quickly.

Alright for a quiet one. Nice and cheap. Few loud mouthed Essex boys. Better than The Crown up the road.

I found myself being chatted up by lairy men, and it's nowhere handy for the station. It's ok, but there are better wetherspoons!

Friendly Weatherspoons. Need I say more......ok then. It's the only place in the high road where no body feels out of place - it caters for all and is cheap as chips. Nice just to sit down and have a laugh with your mates while getting silly drunk. I just wish I could remember it better : )
