Classic large multi-roomed pub behind the town hall. Plenty of ales on and the Acorn Barnsley Bitter went down well.

Proper old Leeds boozer with plenty of old charm & charicter. really like this pub & the ale is always of a good standard...Nice for a pint at any time but really enjoy a pre christmas tipple here.

Wonderful and well kept Victorian interior. Great atmosphere. Fine selection of ales. My only criticism is that I've found it to be a little more expensive compared with other Leeds City Centre pubs when buying like for like. Still well worth a visit though.

...unless you visit Leeds on Good Friday, in which case it's closed all day. Bah, humbug.

Fabulous example of an old Victorian hotel. Leather backed settles in drinking booths. Magnificent glass backing to the bar. Well worth visiting just for the grandeur of the place. Wide range beers from Brains, Brew Dog, Rudgate, Sharps, Wolf, Williams, & York breweries on my visit . And in excellent condition as well. Definitely a must if you visit Leeds.

One of Leeds' finest. Full of character and life with a good range of ale. Fantastic, could have quite happily stayed all day.

Characterful city centre pub behind the imposing Town Hall. It's certainly redolent of a London pub with it's dark wooden panelling, green leather seating and snob screens throughout the one large room, and this is accentuated by the standard Nicholson's food menu which is ubiquitous in London pubs.
Lamps add to the character of the place, and the beer range is strong, with 6 guests from the usual Nicholson's suppliers. I had a Morrissey Fox blonde, which was enjoyable but rather expensive at 3- or am I stuck in the past? It's definitely one of the most characterful pubs in the city but for me that Nicholson's chain feeling is all-pervasive- it doesn't feel so much artificial as contrived. All in all however, I'm nit picking- it's one of the finest pubs in the city architecturally and the beer range is sound, as such you should try to get here. Note the erratic Sunday opening hours- I found out the hard way when I first tried to visit.

Fantastic atmospheric interior with a good selection of beers. Nice booths to sit in. Good bangers and mash too !
|
Decent enough pub with a decent range of hand pulled beers that are usually kept well but there's never enough staff behind the bar. Try Friday after 5 p.m. and you could die of thirst before getting served. A bit pricey too

This is one of the best pubs in leeds in my opinion, there is always a wide range of quality ales on offer, the interior is fantastic and is a great example of victorian decor. This is another pub that was destined for demolition in the 1970s but was thankfully saved. The pub is usually busy and always has a good friendly atmosphere. The manager is also a great asset to the pub as he is one the most friendliest ive met, he always has time for his customers and he helps create the good atmosphere in the pub, he also serves a good pint too which is a bonus!.

Well preserved Nicholson's boozer, with as expected a decent range of standard and seasonal ales from Timothy Taylors, Tetley's, Acorn and Shepherd Neame. Absolutely rammed throughout a saturday afternoon session which affected queuing times, but I still like this place. It feels traditional and homeley, the sort of place you'd be delighted to take refuge in during a cold Yorkshire day.

Has nice features.Tried the bangers and mash,OK.Visited several times during a recent trip to Leeds.
How times have changed!Tetley's mild more expensive than Tetley's bitter.Strange new world.

Delightful pub. An excellent choice of real ales at a reasonable price. So good we used it twice in a day. It is clean and tidy with immaculate toilets.
Tried the bangers and mash later in the day which were good without excelling.
Certainly will be back.

Proper good pub. Good range of beers. Good menu including several veggie options. Lovely interior with booths. Well worth a visit.

Beer range looked good, but had gone there to eat but food was off despite signs to the contrary and menus on each table. Didn't have time to come back.

Late review from November. This is another pub with an interesting interior and we enjoyed a Batemans and O'Kells beer here.

Fine Victorian red-brick pub close to the Town Hall and now owned by Mitchells and Butlers as part of their Nicholsons chain.
Not surprisingly rather like the Scarbrough in style and seemingly also popular with the after work office crowd, it also serves a good variety of real ales. As well as the usual suspects - Black Sheep, Landlord, Tetley - the pb offered several tasty beers from the Acorn Brewery in Barnsley, a welcome change of tipple.
Note the splendid outside signage - " Victoria Family and Commercial Hotel" - and the partitioned booths on the right as you go in through the splendid entrance. I suspect the screens partitioning the booths aren't original.
I seem to recollect that the pub won some kind of CAMRA preservation award some time ago.
This is yet another Leeds pub that is worth making the effort to visit if you get the opportunity

The beer was in good nick but when I tried to order food at 2030 on Monday evening I was told that the kitchen had closed. This despite there being menus on tables clearly stating that food is served until 2200, and people were served after I had enquired so their orders must have been taken. The staff displayed a "couldn't care less " attitude and the general feeling was of a chain pub not being well-managed. A shame as the place seems to have great potential for a cracking pub. As I was hungry I only had one beer and sought food elsewhere.

A great everyman pub. Your fussy mother would like it here, as would your other half. Great big booths for groups to sit in(couples, please stop taking up a whole booth please!). Tetley mild on tap, sausage mash and onion gravy, raining outside, warm inside. Perfect day.
|
A lovely mid-Victorian city centre pub with a rather grand and largely unspoilt interior - nicely decorated and furnished. Five real ales; I tried three, which were all served in particularly good condition.
|
