user reviews of the Victory, South Gosforth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Victory was the first of 3 South Gosforth establishments I sampled late on Wednesday evening. I didn't find it particularly welcoming. My arrival appeared to be a distraction for the barmaid, who was placing glasses on shelves. Without getting off the floor, she asked if she could help me, almost as if there was a faint possibility that I wouldn't need any help that would require her to get off the floor. Ales were Victory Ale (Caledonian Edinburgh Castle), Theakston Lightfoot & Thwaites Wainwright. Some kind of musical pub quiz was going on. So there was no chance of a quiet drink. Nice enough interior. But nothing else to recommend it.

Beer still poor. In my humble opinion no real change despite new management. Still no food. Expensive compared to other pubs in the immediate area. Did not get in this years camra real ale guide. Its been 12 months since I was last in and I think best avoided for the future.

Getting better, I'd say. Landlord seemed enthusiastic about the beer and the pint I had was certainly very good. Possibly smartened up a bit as well since some of the previous comments. Worth giving it another go.

Thankfully now under new management. They are making a real effort but still have beer quality issues in my opinion. Maybe they should try selling fewer different bands?. Service is much better as they do most of it themselves. Prices still quite high and still needs refurbishment. They have tried doing Sunday lunches .

visited again recently. No real change other than the beer was rank so i took it back. The next pint was no better. I've noticed many of the Victorys former locals in the Brandling just down the road, and that where i'll head in the future.

Grubby pub that needs a refurb. In particular toilets are not the best. Beer quality no more than average and it does not surprise me people have taken drinks back.I have never seen the landlord serving which is always a bad sign to me. The staff hired appear disinterested and can clock watch until the end of thier shift. Prices seemhigher to me than its immediate competitors (Millstone and Brandling). However it seems popular but could do so much better.

This pub could really be a wonderful, warm local. Instead, either through lack of effort or motivation, it feels dank and un-inviting. Staff appear slow or simply inexperienced and the pints taste flat. A real shame.

Of all the pubs I've visited this ones toilets are the worst and have been for years despite the changes in Landlords and Landladies. The cellar is cold and damp so the real is usually ok - this used to be the best pint in Tyneside back in the 80's & 90's - what's wrong?

This pub is like an old and comfy pair of slippers, but like any old and comfy pair of slippers, eventually you get around to buying new ones (or have them bought for you, usually at Christmas) and never set foot in the old pair ever again, a bit like this pub really, because if my old and comfy slippers ever treated me in the manner that this old boot of a sour-faced landlady treated me last Friday night, I surely will never set foot in this establishment ever again.

Two pints of Kronenberg ordered (I never trust the ale in there anyway)

Two received. Flat and Warm.

So

Two Pints of Kronenberg taken back.

The so-called landlady is clearly on a blobbostrop and point blank refuses to accept that there is indeed anything wrong with her lager, insisting that no-one else who has ordered it has complained, and yet refusing to either take a sample from the glass or the tap herself.

So, because of that; Shabby Pints, shabby pub and shabby landlady, hence the shabby grade: Zilch out of ten and clean yer pipes or do something you cretinous whiffs of pish.
