This has always been one of my favourite pubs in Wells. Although the Star Hotel was a close second (what's happened to that place??). I tried the Butcombe, spot on!! I hadn't been in here since 1987, it hasn't changed a lot. Still a great place to have a beer or 6!!

A classic coaching inn with a connection to the man who gave Pennsylvania its name. Unfortunately, more people seem to be interested in the connection with the movie Hot Fuzz and Nick Frost leering down from the wall is a reminder of how anyone - I mean anyone - can make it in showbiz. The exterior is lovely, the interior crassly modernised. Butcombe offerings were on tap, chicken nuggets available gratis on the bar top.

In here just before noon last Saturday and most of the customers are on coffee or tea. 3 hand pulls = Doom Bar, Butcombe Bitter and St Austell Tribute. I has a pint of the latter which was excellent but then it should be for £3.50.

Visited late afternoon on a recent scorching hot day. The pub has a small courtyard at the back and this was where most of the customers were. Pub is an old hotel with connections to William Penn. Had a decent pint of St Austell Tribute. The pub is like Wells, nothing wrong with the place but lacking in excitement. Dont get me wrong the Cathedral is magnificent, but come late afternoon when the coach parties have left and the shops and market have shut there are remarkable few people about, and this is the middle of the summer

Large old hotel situated in the historic market place. Wedged as always when i made my annual trip to Wells Carnival.Plenty of staff though meant i didn't have to wait long for a beer,Doom,Glastonbury and bcombe were on offer at 3pint. 7/10

Decent enough pub right on the market square. Quite a strong food offering with a seperate restaurant area, although we didn't sample the food on our visit. Two beers on tap, Butcombe and Cornish Coaster. It looks as though they usually have Doom Bar as well although this was off when we visited. Also Gaymers Original and Olde English ciders. Unfortunately on a busy Saturday lunch time, there was only one young girl serving behind the bar. We waited around five minutes during which time she only dealt with one customer who was paying by card. As there were another three or four people in front of us, we decided to go elsewhere. There were several other staff around, but apparently they were unable or unwilling to assist behind the bar.

Not the widest selection of ales but what they did have had been well kept. The staff were all nice and helpful and the memorabilia on the wall from Hot Fuzz was subtle. I expected more and suspect that if this was a London pub, it would have been not so tastefully managed. The food was pleasant but overpriced for what it was. The atmosphere was pleasant but I did pay my visit during the day so have no idea what it would be like at night.

An odd place with mixed clientele to put it mildly. One of the locations for the film Hot Fuzz, the memorabilia is prominently displayed in the Bar. Staff were very friendly, and the food was good. Beer on offer was from Butcombe (Bitter) and Sharps (Cornish Coaster & Doombar) all of which were exceptionally well kept. Right in the centre of the City, worth a visit although, as mentioned, the clientele is somewhat eclectic

Visited on a midweek lunchtime. Comfortable surroundings, varied menu choice, friendly service. Ordered a toasted sandwich in some kind of Italian bread, which was fine, but not worth shouting about. Nice to have a paper or two to read during my visit.

A truly terrible place. It's where all of the beggers and dosser of Wells gather at the end of a hard day. God knows what the residents of the hotel have to say but if I'd stayed there I'd want my money back. poor food poor service horrible staff and customers.

Good service, always welcoming. Food is good value and large portions. good real ale and a large selection of other drinks. what really makes this place special is its location and one of the best courtyards i have ever sat in to take lunch. very good furniture and umbrellas

I believe the below review to be very harsh. The atmosphere is very nice in the pub, and probably has the best tap beer in Wells (exlcuding City Arms but its a struggle to get to the bar there). The cloths have since departed and it is now no smoking.

Very sad. The situation of this establishment could hardly be better - right in the middle of a beautiful city, only a few yards from one of the country's finest cathedrals. But what does it make of this? I can't speak for the hotel side of things, and I can only assume that that's where all the effort is directed. But the 'pub' part is grim. Again, it starts with every advantage - a lovely, low-ceilinged (now single) room, with two big fireplaces (of which almost nothing is made), in an ideal situation. But they seem to have gone out of their way to make it unattractive. The decent wooden tables are all covered with tatty plastic cloths; why? The food we tried was indifferent (though admittedly inexpensive). On the plus side, the service was cheerful and friendly, and the beer was fine. But what a disaster: this place could be a pub you'd travel miles to visit; as it is, you can't call it more than very ordinary.
