user reviews of the Royal Oak, Charmouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice little pub run under palmers brewery which is ok as I do like their ales.

A few local and tourists dotted around here and there. Only had the one which was nice.

The trouble with the village of Charmouth is that their isn''t really a lot there and is more of a place you tend to bypass.

7/10

A gem of a boozer! Palmer's ales, Gold and Copper on tap, friendly locals and great bar staff. I

The food they offered looked good.

All in all, if you're in the area, you could do worse than stop off here for a scoop or two.

Visited this pub on two occasions. I sampled all the Palmers ales, which is all they offer. The best of the bunch was a Spring Hop, a nice hoppy ale. All the others on offer, Copper, Best and 200 were all variations of a theme i.e. just more alcoholic than the other and not very inspiring. The pub is very pleasant with local paraphernalia adorning the walls and the food is pretty good, very big portions. Just a shame that the beer was not to my taste/varied.

Me and the wife-to-be stayed in Charmouth for a week and drank in this pub a number of times during our stay and found it to be a charming and friendly establishment. The ales were from Bridport brewery Palmers and were very well kept, there is also Thatchers cider and Becks on tap. We ate here one night and the food was great and was well priced. We did the quiz on the Thursday which was free to play as is not always the case nowadays. All in all we enjoyed the Royal Oak so much we didn't visit the George down the road once as we were made to feel so welcome. The new Landlord and Landlady are doing a great job and the pub was full with a mixture of diners and drinkers every time we went so I think that speaks volumes!! Great pub, keep up the good work and we will defo be back!!

It is nice to see that the current tenants are seeming to be doing well and I would echo the sentiments regarding Palmers ensuring they are helped as much as possible.
However, the previous tenants have struggled to be accepted by the motley bunch of locals and I know that they have been treated extremely shabbily so don't be too critical of them.
Best of luck to the new incumbents and keep up the good work!

Such a lovely pub, new landlord and landlady totally have the approach needed to make this lovely little pub work. its finally nice to see two people who want to make such a wonderful pub work, previous to phil and angela this pub had a successsion of bad tennants who gave this pub such a bad name. Great beer and food is now available along with a very friendly welcome!! the locals aint to bad either, i would much prefer to choose this lovely little boozer over the other pub in the village!! give it a try i promise you'll be back for a 2nd visit!

Visited Charmouth again. New landord/lady (AGAIN) in the Oak. No improvement in the George and can't see either of these pubs lasting much longer.

Shame the owners are leaving really nice traditional pub with good handpumped beer and clean glasses! Trend seemed to appear throughout our stay in the area locals very unfriendly shame we loved the area but wont visit it again.

Visited very recently, having been to The George the week before (see comments) The beer was in good condition and the landlord happy to talk about what a bad summer it has been for him.
I had a rump steak with pepper sauce and trimmings, the wife gammon and trimmings. The food was great, just like home cooked, which I suppose you could say it was. My wife couldn't eat all of her gammon, I had the left over for lunch the following day.
Although perhaps not the atmosphere of the George, thank goodness, I engaged a local in conversation, very friendly. I will re-visit this pub when next in the area. Don't give up landlord, as a well known lying politician once said 'things can only get better' which they will if you carry on serving food like this.

Tried the Royal Oak for a meal on Saturday night, having been slightly put off the George by a couple of comments, only to find they'd run out of food at 8pm. Didn't really like the atmosphere either, so didn't stay for a drink. Went back to the George and had such a nice meal and welcome that we went back Sunday night and took seven other people with us. I haven't rated the Royal Oak, as didn't stay long enough to give it a fair trial.

Heard that the latest landlady/landlord are leaving. That's three in three years. Is it the area, the locals? Probably the locals!. You can't get near the bar when they are in and you are made very unwelcome by them. Not a pub I would visit again now. Also tried the George, locals just as bad and the food even worse.

Went to eat here last week whilst on our holidays was closed :( maybe due to time of year! We ended up at The George in West bay, as heard it had new owners! lovely pub! and great food!

Something wrong I think with brucemasters eyes perhaps. Clearly states open until 3 on Friday but open 12 to 11 Saturdays. (Sundays 1200 to 1030)
sarv1 - 7 Nov 2010 11:26
Came by on Friday 5/11/10. Despite being advertised as open all day, was totally closed at 1530. One of many I have tried to visit that do not stick to their posted opening hours.

Decent enough pub with friendly bar staff.
The food was OK but nothing above the ordinary really.
Beers were well kept and tasty. One warning though, a pint of the Palmers 200 will set you back 3-50, absolute disgrace really although I know its not the pubs fault, come on Palmers, how can you justify such a high price, not even had to transport it very far !!!!

Solidly traditional Palmers Brewery village pub catering for the local trade, 3 Palmers beers on draught and very well kept. Friendly staff and locals, table skittles in the bar. Food available lunchtime and evening, not open all day though.

We have just come to our holiday home and last night came into the Oak for a meal and to listen to the music. The food if anything is better and the beer really nice. The music was superb so yet another lovely evening.

Very interesting comments by so called HonestJohn666. This is the second entry posted by him about this pub and again he has nothing other than detrimental comments to make. This seems to be a common approach by this individual when you check all his comments about other pubs as well. Why don't you come in and speak to the landlord/landlady and voice your concerns honestly?
ra1 - 14 Jul 2010 20:16
Popped in today for a pint to see if anything had improved, really sorry to say it is still the same if not worse, flat expensive beer and a spooky lack of locals, where have they all gone?
honest_john_666 - 14 Jul 2010 18:24
We were surprised to read HonestJohn666 's comments. We have just had one of the nicest meals and evenings for a long time. This is somewhere we will visit again on our next holiday. I can assure you that I have nothing to do with the pub HJ666!
gordond - 4 Jun 2010 22:06
The last review must have been posted by the new tenants family, it is a complete disaster, over inflated beer prices, horrible food, closed when they feel like it, would not be surprised to see it closed completely before the end of the Year.
honest_john_666 - 13 May 2010 19:40
Really nice, relaxed atmoshpere, I'm told the new tenants only moved in a month ago; its family run, the landlords are friendly and thier daughter runs the kitchen. There was a nice choice of food on the menu and I would recommend the draught cider! I'll definately be back when I next reurn to this part of the country.

Slightly , only slightly disapointed with this place. the long serving couple who lifted this to perfection have gone. no problems yet but the "see your face" in the tables is not the same. Beer wise Palmers is on top form, the best for possibly thirty years. The pub is now open all hours god sends and food is availablea virtually all times.I am crossing my fingers on this place, it is/was one of the top three in Dorset , a county that is truly blessed when it comes to pubs and according to my sore feet very big hills.

Disregard the comments posted in 2007, new tenants are doing a wonderful job of bring new life into the Pub.
11 out of 10 here.

New tenants are excellent. Food on Sunday was great value and very tasty. They excused our muddy gumboots. Long may they rule!
merlds - 16 Feb 2009 14:33

Report this for removal prs - prs are you posting from a dyslexic school ? This pub is terrific ! Food and Real Ale to die for, a breath of fresh air compared to the big beer barns of Central Croydon.

This pub is really quiet, a good place to avoid the beach crowd, take a book and enjoy. This pub is in my top twenty !
