The wife and I visited the George two evenings in a row for a meal this weekend, as camping just round the corner. Potentially put off by the two most recent comments on here, we walked up to the Royal Oak, only to be told they'd run out of food at 8pm on a Saturday. Came back to the George and were very pleasantly surprised. Otter was just up my street, but I could see why it's distinctive flavour might put a few off. They also had Tribute available. The steak and kidney pie was a huge portion and (whether homemade or not) was very tasty and piping hot. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, including the blonde ones. We recommended the place to two families pitched next to us and they joined us the following night. I had bangers and mash in a giant yorkshire, and the wife had a very nice fish pie. There was a great atmosphere and I would certainly go back. Maybe it does need a bit of a refurb, but I wouldn't want it turned into every other gastro-pub. It serves its purpose very well.

The Royal Oak, Charmouth
Tried the Royal Oak for a meal on Saturday night, having been slightly put off the George by a couple of comments, only to find they'd run out of food at 8pm. Didn't really like the atmosphere either, so didn't stay for a drink. Went back to the George and had such a nice meal and welcome that we went back Sunday night and took seven other people with us. I haven't rated the Royal Oak, as didn't stay long enough to give it a fair trial.
