Posh expensive food options on board. Only two ales (Doombar and Landlord). But a friendly welcome.

Atmosphere of a morgue (lunchtime) and sky high drinks prices. Avoid.

Went to the Ferryboat for Sunday lunch, mainly as a result of reading the (more recent) reviews on this site.
The beefburger was underwhelming, the fish and chips were definitely substandard (wet, crumbly and oily, not fresh and firm). Food took a long time to arrive, staff weren't particularly polite, or attentive. Nobody asked "how the meal was" (else I'd have told 'em). The only time we saw a turn of speed from the staff was when we got up and walked towards the door -- always a sure fire way of getting the bill quick that one.
Upon rechecking the "positive" reviews below, it's interesting to note that a sequence of 6 gushingly-positive reviews were all posted between 8 & 9 Nov 2010, all left by users who have posted no other reviews. And all joined the site on the day that they left their only review. And three of those users claim to visit the pub regularly. What are the chances of that, eh? S'pose I should have been paying more attention?
My advice - go somewhere else.

We have visited this pub many times without our children and we have had generally pleasant evenings. However, do not take your children to this place as you will be met with a very abrasive attitude if your kids do any little thing wrong. NOT CHILD FRIENDLY! We will not be going back.

Another pub next door to the greyhound.... And here are all the punters! Extensive menu and they were still accommodating enough to let me change the meal a bit without charging extra. Great service. Landlord was a bit ropey (beer, not the fella behind the bar) but I often find it doesnt travel well.

What a fantastic find!! I have been to this pub frequently and rate it as the best pub in the wide variety available in Pangbourne and Whitchurch.
Not only a great atmosphere - very friendly and welcoming - but lovely setting and scrummy food. The owners have created a warm and appealing setting where I have felt comfortable visiting either on my own on occasion or more frequently with family and friends.
A gorgeous garden (for those warmer) days is at the back - beautif ully planted by I understand Jesse - very pleasant for sitting out. Inside is a relaxed bar area including lovely sofas - fab for chilling out.
Food is fantastic - always a good selection - everything I have ever had is well prepared and delicious. The best chef's salad I have ever had, fab venison casserole the other evening and to die for puddings.

Lovely place, great atmosphere. Have been visiting The Ferryboat Inn for 2,5 years now and every single time it's been a great experience. The pub is very original with its stylish interior decoration which also add a note of sophistication but doesn't overdo it making this place suitable for both young people seeking place with character and older people who are looking for warm welcome and tactful staff. The employees are always very friendly and attentive and make you feel very much "at home". The owner makes sure that the place doesn't lose its charm and uniqueness. On top of this, every single time I'm at The Ferryboat, I get the most delicious food! The menu is perfect and I always find something I love..plus have few favourites! :-) In fact, I got so hungry now thinking about their food, I might just go there now to eat my supper! Definitely recommend it to anyone. Ten out of ten - will not go to any other pub in the area as long as the Feryboat and its owners are here.

We do not live locally to The Ferryboat but travel to this fantastic pub which is always offers friendly service. They have a wide range of beers and an excellent list of fine wines. But the main reason for our journey is the delicious food and the desserts which are " to die for"! An all round very pleasant experience every time, at very reasonable prices. A cosy pub!!

Fabulous country pub with quality and customer service you expect from the very best. Food is excellent, staff are really friendly. Kids will love their takeaway ice creams - when all the local shops are closed. Quirky garden area Very highly recommended for the whole family.

I entered thesepremises at about 7.15 pm on Tuesday 14 April 2009 and was handed a menu. After 10 minutes a young man of Asian appearance came to take my food order. I started to tell him what I wanted when he turned, without any excuse-me to answer a telephone. He then disappeared. After waiting 5 minutes I left and went to the pub up the road to a polite and professional welcome. I emailed the pub and got this reply <I am the Asian Man in Question and the owner of the Ferryboat. If you remember you were not quite ready to order and the phone rang as it is my phone I decided to answer it, thinking I had time to take a booking or take away order. When I had finished you had gone. Sorry for this but phone calls are a very important part of my business. If there is a next time I will give you my all my attention.>
I replied as follows <You are in error. I was quite clear about my order but had no chance to complete it. You made it obvious that your phone call was more important than the customer standing in front of you. At the very least, why could you not say "please excuse me while I take this call" ? You are a rude and arrogant man and a disgrace to the trade. I expect that you will not in business for much longer>

It was a hot day, and other pubs beer was suffering so this is the test of a good pub, Real Ale should be served at 12 degrees centigrade, cool in Summer warm in Winter. This pub didn't pass the test, the Black Sheep bitter was 'on the turn' didn't quite merit getting it changed though. Ate in this pub, reasonably priced, after all pubs have to make a profit, I enjoyed my infusion of saturated fat.
|
Worth the walk from Pangbourne and the nice views over the river whilst watching the silly motorists handing over the toll money. 3 ales on offer - Black Sheep, Summer Lightning and Landlord. Are these guys Chinese? Thai? - no idea what they were saying. Small concrete beer garden at the back where we ate - standard pub grub, although nice, my ploughmans could be bought for 'pence' at the supermarket & I paid about 6 - such is life. We both agreed the Black Sheep was going off & was a little cloudy but didn't take it back because it was sort of 'acceptable' (but it wasn't really).

On my last reveiw I spelt beer wrong, well I am French
|
Much improved from my last visit, some fine ales in good condition. Landlord, Black Sheep Bitter and Adnams Bitter. One prTimothy Taylor problem though I cant stop going back for more.
|
I thought this was a nice pub. Quite small and a mixture of old and new decor. The beer (Tim Taylor's landlord) was good and the service friendly. Recommended stop on Thames Walk. Didn't have any food.
|
By the admission of David ( who according to their website) runs this pub, the crockery may not have had food residue washed out of it and that may have been the cause of mould in the dessert. Second excuse for said mould was that it came from inside the packaging the food was poured out of. So much for freshly prepared!!! NEVER will go back and would certainly NOT recommend to anyone.

Bland isn't bland enough for what this pub seems to have become compared to a couple of years ago. I returned with fond memories but won't bother with another visit; there are a million other pubs like this. The beer was fine though, it that is all you are looking for.
|
Visted today but I was shocked by the blandness. I preferred the atmosphere described by 'BinBagBob' as riotous, hallucinogenic agglomeration of chintzy paraphernalia and assorted ephemera. Probably not bother again. Best to go to the Cross Keys in Pangbourne - a gem.
|
Good pub. Lovely courtyard garden, if now a little smoky. Very freindly, clean smart interior gone are the stuffed animals. It's now busy most nights with a gentle hum from the local crowd. Timothy Taylor Landlord, Black Sheep Best and an Adnams. All well kept. The landlords have developed two previous pubs in the local area and seem to be bringing the regulars along with them.
|
Nondescript decor is saved by decent ale (the Black Sheep especially), excellent food and extremely affable service. Its opening hours also give the pub a major advanatge over the Greyhound down the road.
|
Changes here have done nothing to enhance what was a convivial if eccentric drinking hole. It though remains eccentric and is worth one visit for that alone.

From bizarre to the ridiculous. Went in this place about six months ago and thought I had had too many, went in the other day and it has gone very modern. Better suited to the centre of London I think?

New owners have altered the decor. Gone is the bizarre atmosphere, but a decent pub remains, as does the beer.
|
Walk through the front door and you'll assume the building has been cleft in twain. To the right, a pleasant enough but nondescript dining area. To the left, a riotous, hallucinogenic agglomeration of chintzy paraphernalia and assorted ephemera smacks you between the eyes. Two well kept pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord slipped down a treat, to the accompaniment of the clientele regaling us with details of their recent medical histories. Excitement was briefly aroused amongst the locals with a delivery of apples from a local nonagenarian, but good order was then restored with the arrival of two plates of roast potatoes on the bar.
All in all, jaw-droppingly bizarre. Well worth another visit.
