I visited this pub (more of a restuarant really) today with friends for a meal, and found it very pleasant, so i was surprised to read the negative comments below. I thought the menu was extensive, and my liver and bacon was excellent, as was the Sussex smokie starter. The service was excellent, and the building itself is a delight. My only gripe is that it is more devoted to eaters than drinkers, and the beer (a good local one, Isfield Brewery Strawberry Blonde) was not terribly well kept, which was a shame. I would go back for a meal though, very good.....

Dissapointed with recent lunch time experience. Booked arrived at 12:30, it was not busy, wth only one other table full. Not all the choices were available, my lamb Tagine was full of fatty chewy meat, two others had the roast beef with burnt Yorkshires on the outside and underdone on the inside, my wife had Roast Turkey but the sprouts were very underdone. I ordered a Ginger pudding, it was OK but it was supposed to be Rum soaked but there was no hint of Rum on the dish. Very long wait for service. Not sure if we were unlucky on this occasion as we have previously eaten here and it has been fine. We should have complained at the time I know ,but didn't want to spoil the ocassion. I wrote in and complained after the event, but the reply was a fairly basic appology saying next time we will recieve their utmost attention. Not sure if I want to risk it though

How disappointing! We have been regular users of this pub for a number of years and found their meals and drinks to be of the style that we appreciated. Beer from the local brewery always tasted right and the selection of meals catered for most tastes and were always served piping hot and with a good selection of vegetables. So, for any celebrations, treats for visitors or the odd occasion when we fancied a meal, it was always the Peacock as first choice.
Following an extended closure, we visited last night for a meal. We were presented with a very limited choice from a standard or A La Carte menu and daily specials board. A significant proportion fell in to what I call " pretentious" meals. Trying to be the new style of small portions on a plate with fancy names for the ingredients. Gone were all the old favourites and little or no choice in plain (as in non-spiced, none game) style meals. Even the wife's liqueur coffee was only tepid and not hot. Also noticed that there were no 'regulars' enjoying a drink at the bar - there were only three other couples in the pub at 7:30 on a Saturday evening. All in all very disappointing and sadly one that we will be crossing off our favourites list for quite a while.

Came with friends and children for Sunday eve meal. Friendly & helpful staff. Manager offered and gave my partner three tasters of wine to help her choose - nice touch. All meal were servered together - well cooked and presented, extras addons etc no problem. Good Beer range served just right. All-in-all lovely traditional pub, comfortable and a very pleasent experience.

My husband and I took my father to the Peacock for Father's day lunch and I am afraid we came away rather disappointed! The place is gorgeous, and the food was very good, but the service we received really let it down. We were booked in for 1.00, and we ordered at about 1.10, but did not receive our food until 2.30! There was no explanation or apology for this, and the restaurant was not busy enough to warrant such a delay. We had ordered bread and olives with our drinks but these did not arrive until about 5 minutes before our meals anyway so we were very hungry! The table next to us received their food well before us, despite having arrived after - clearly they were regulars... Having been offered dessert menus, we did not receive them, and eventually had to go and find them ourselves. To add insult to hunger, when my husband went to pay (after waiting some time for the bill) he, unfortunately, did not check the receipt properly and we later realised that we had been charged for nearly �15.00 of drinks we did not have. Upon calling the pub, I was told that they could not do anything whatsoever to refund the money onto the card unless we came back in - which, as we live in Yorkshire, is hardly practical! I'm afraid they made no effort to make amends for their error and barely even apologised. All in all, it left a rather bad taste! We won't be going back there in a hurry. It is a shame that such a beautiful pub is owned by people with such a casual attitude towards customer service.

The Peacock Inn is a lovely building in beautiful surroundings.
The drinks are rather pricey, and the quality a little lacking as my pint of London Pride was not as bright as it should have been.
The food was also overpriced for what you get. Nothing wrong with the food really, it was nice enough, just nothing special.
Finally we didn't feel particularly welcomed by the abrupt service and felt as though we were not as important as some of the other customers who were there. The most important rule of customer service is to treat all customers with the same respect.
It's a shame really but I don't think we will be rushing back for a visit anytime soon.

Good plain food, reasonable prices. Had to cross a road from car park which was a bit 'hairy' to say the least

Have been visiting this pub (with long intervals between visits) for around 25yrs! Visited last night with friends for a meal which proved highly enjoyable. I had Steak and Guiness Pie which was crammed with tender steak, others in the group all enjoyed their meals, good choice including veggie, not cheap but I considered it offered good value.
Couple of minor gripes. Some extra gravy with the pie would not have come amiss and if you are paying �1.60 for a coffee I would expect at least one "waffer thin" mint and a refill would also be good.
Harveys Best, Green King IPA and Fullers London Pride on offer. Lovely old building, nice gardens, very popular so I would book if you are tempted to visit.

This place has the best steak I have ever been lucky enough to eat!
The staff is really polite and clean, the service is always perfect. It has a very charming atmosphere so even if there are only a few people eating in the building it still doesn�t feel awkward. Even when it is busy though the service standards do not slip in the slightest, it is an incredibly comforting place to just have a few drinks or the MOST amazing steak!
The place is not too "try hard" like others of its type.
Well done to all of the staff that make this place what it is.

As I'm the first to review, I'd say that says it all about this place! It keeps its head down & its nose clean! Beautiful looking pub, very picture postcard. Not the world�s most exciting menu, in fact I'd hazard a guess that it�s prepared from fresh stuff a few times a week then microwaved as ordered! It�s a very heavy stew/curry/pie based menu. But, that�s not always a bad thing. Better to have "pinged" food fresh than nasty boil in the bag rubbish! Service is pleasant & chatty without being over-bearing. There are several others in the area that are more daring & charismatic. (Five Bells & Jolly Sportsman) but as I don�t think these guys want to be daring, good luck to them.
