visited sunday 27th lunchtime, packed,no chance of a table, wrong! lady on the door advised us about 10mins wait, took my name went to the bar and ordered a flat hobgoblin. As still as sherry but better! should mention my partner and i are both CAMRA members so this was a real plus.Excellent pint! Perused the pub papers and soon shown to our table.big choice menu from which i chose the lambs liver with bacon and onions.excellent meal served with a smile and an extra boat of gravy.could'nt resist a second pint condeming my partner to drive. Service at all times was tops! It was very busy making the attention of the staff even more remarkable.Asked to see the manager,Shane,to complement him on a well run pub,in fact, the best service i've ever had.Well done all, look forward to a return, cheers! Nice enough place for families - we've had Sunday lunch here a couple of times recently because we've had a new baby in tow. Probably wouldn't want to go here otherwise, although they do have Jennings beers on which is a plus.

Re my posting below I should have said the Devonshire Arms not the Derbyshire Arms
|
I recently stayed in the Chatsworth Caravan Site near Baslow with my partners parents. We fancied a pub dinner so we looked on this site.
This pub is a lovely pub despite the comments below. The food was pub food and tasted nice, the staff were polite and attentive and in line with the two comments below is a cosy friendly pub.
As we looked on this site we searched for Baslow and two pubs were listed, this and the Derbyshire Arms. Given the two bad reviews for the Wheatsheaf and as strangers to the area, we decided that the Derbyshire was a safer bet ... but it wasn't. This is why I am surprised at the two bad comments for the wheatsheaf and how they specifically suggest you go to the Derbyshire as the Wheatsheaf is terrible .. bizarre as we found it to be the other way around!!
The Wheatsheaf was a lovely pub with lots of people in for dinner on a Sunday evening at 7.45pm, whereas the Derbyshire Arms is dirty, with a musty smell and when I visited, completely empty ..
To be honest you need to form your own opinion. If you are staying in Baslow or the Chatsworth Caravan Site I would suggest going into both pubs to make your own mind up (they are across the road from each other) .. and if the Derbyshire is on a parr to how we found it, then you, like me will be reading the messages and thinking this doesn't compare to reality.

We visited the Wheatsheaf last week. Walked into the bar, stood at the bar waiting to be served and were completely ignored. There was a barman stood straight opposite me pulling drinks for an order. He looked up, looked at me, then just carried on with what he was doing. I have been here before, and I agree - they only want to know if you are eating. We were going to eat, but after this I turned round and walked straight out of the door into the Devonshire Arms opposite - what a contrast!! We were acknowledged as we walked through the door. Polite, friendly staff. Not overpowering. I WILL NEVER GO INTO THE WHEATSHEAF AGAIN!
Ps - they dont like walkers either.

We have been holidaying in this area for years while exploring the wonderful walks, and eating locally all that time. I can't understand why anyone would want to eat at The Wheatsheaf when there's so much better within a short distance (although we have to every year when the family have a reunion - because of the children). It gets worse year on year.
Service is slow and poor. Most of the staff are surly and indifferent (when you can get their attention), the tables get cleared when they feel like it (especially in the garden). The menu is just the same old tarted up granny food as in all the other pubs the chain owns(and everything is microwaved bought-in portions - ask them to fresh cook for you or is it fresh home-made ingredients and see the panic!)
And the garden is a mess (although a godsend for the children).
Don't even bother going in for just a drink - if you're not eating thy're not bothered.
If you don't have kids with you you'll be far better off trying The Devonshire Arms opposite - great carvery, great menu and a proper lively boozer as well as a superb restaurant full of good traditional home-cooked food in eneormous portions. If you do have kids - try the Rutland down the road, althought the beer isn't good, the foods cheap and they have a garden backing on to the river. For breakfast or a good evening meal go to Charlies Bistro in the village - or Rowleys if you have lots to spend and aren't hungry. Or if they don't suit you, drive almost anywhere for better than the Wheatsheaf within 5 miles.
Really there's no reason to eat in what is essentially a poor chain pub serving poor microwaved rubbish with poor service. Pity, it's a great site, just nobody seems bothered about service or good food.

I absolutely love eating here. The staff are so friendly and there is always an inviting atmosphere. The food is fantastic and not overpriced like the nearby highwayman. There are always plenty of varied specials, I have never had a bad meal in here and doubt I ever will. The vegetable enchiladas are particularly wonderful when on the specials.

Cosy, friendly pub large but still maintains a good feel about it. Food a move above the standard pub fodder - good
