Although clearly food orientated, there was a good choice of 4 or 5 cask ales available - the pint we had was excellent. We didn't eat so can't comment on the food. A steep uphill walk back to Stocksmoor Station though!

Lovely country pub in the middle of the small hamlet of Thunderbridge, just outside Kirkburton itself. The beer in here is always excellent whilst the food is outstanding. Very popular throughout the year, though best to avoid at Christmas and New Year if you dislike crowds as it gets packed inside. Car park opposite and tables outside for the nicer weather. There is a larger restaurant upstairs, which I haven't eaten in but if the standard is like the bar food then you are onto a winner. Some rooms available too, this is the pub for all occasions!

We've been to this place a few times over the last couple of months and it is definitely one of the best pubs in the area. The beer has without fail been spot on and served at perfect temperature. Going in for the first time suggests it might be a bit of a poncy eating out type country pub but you soon notice elements more associated with a village local such as dogs and lively barside drinking which gives the place a very relaxed atmosphere. That said, the service is formal (but not stiff) and one is addressed as ' Sir ' rather than ' Mate ' which is definitely a positive from my point of view. We've eaten there and I would have to say that the food is rather overpriced for what it is though. Incidentally, the village is worth a visit for the wonderful streamside garden down the road from the pub which has some lovely unexpected features, notably some sculptures of hunting dogs.

Called in a few weeks ago in the afternoon whilst walking. Seemed a well run and friendly place. Didn't have any alcohol as wanted to stay awake, though I've been at other times and found the handpulled Taylor's Bitter acceptable. Has rather insistent piped music at times, but you can sit outside in the covered seated area at the front, which is very attractive.

Tucked away, in a small hamlet, just off the A629, �The Woodman� is an up market pub and restaurant, also offering accommodation. The pub interior is narrow and linear, comprised of four drinking areas. D�cor is to a high standard and the rooms are cosily low ceilinged.
The restaurant is housed on the floor above, although bar meals are available downstairs.
There were three real ales on offer, on our visit: Timothy Taylor�s �Landlord� and �Golden Best�, also Black Sheep Bitter. The �Landlord� was clean, fresh and served at a decent temperature. Unfortunately, it was a lively barrel and the young barman was clueless how to deal with it. Ordering a round was an ordeal.
Eating in the restaurant, the food on the Christmas menu was mainly to a high standard. However, the service was, at best, rather erratic e.g. wine arriving half way through the main course. Partly due, I suspect, to the sheer number of waiting staff. Also, the maitre d� appeared to be one of those resentful, passive-aggressive types. In fairness, the place was absolutely heaving and any shortcomings may well have been down to the Christmas rush and temporary hirings.
Service aside, I came away with the impression that everything at �The Woodman� is all very tasteful, if a little lacking in soul, particularly in the bar. However, it would be interesting to compare notes after a visit on a normal weekend.

Nice pub now since my last visit a couple of years ago when the host was rude and obnoxious, good pint of Tim Taylors.

3 roomed pub with dartboard, food and accommodation. Taylors Best and Theakstons cask ale (occasional Landlord too)
