On fire this afternoon, with fire brigade in attendance. Probably not an insurance job; these fires usually start at night so the flames have a chance to get going before the firemen get there. Not sure yet whether it will be a write off or can be repaired, but it's going to be closed for a while at least.

Visiting as part of the Somerset CAMRA pub trail. The pub is very pretty indeed, with a nice garden and thatched roof etc, but outside toilets in the 21st century? Come on, I know this is Somerset, but indoor plumbing is nothing special nowadays. The beer was no better than ordinary even though they claim to have been awarded some kind of award for the quality of their beer. Basically seems to be a food led pub, although I cant comment on the food, the menu looked too poncy for me.

Went to pub on basis of entry in Good Beer Guide. Lovely old building - must be fantastic in the Winter sitting in front of large wood burner in the inglenook. However our mistake was to visit early on a Saturday evening. ALL tables reserved for patrons eating. Only place to have a drink was at bar stools, already taken, or to stand. We were able to sit at a table laid out for dining but under the strict proviso that we vacated by 8. Hardly a relaxing drink. Pity as the couple of pints of Exmoor I had were really good.

visited here as part of quite a large party. the seating arrangement was dreadful. Very narrow with waitresses and customers constantly squeezing past and knocking you. The service ( in fairness there was a lot of us ) was very slow and not over-friendly. The food was very good and my two pints of HSD were very drinkable. Would only go back at a quiet time. Definately a place to avoid at peak times

The usual unwelcome reception from the bar staff, although the one who I assume is the owner tried to smile, either that or a touch of wind. Beer usually OK and has been said many times before, a nice setting

Mixed feelings about this pub. Mainly an eating place. Staff rather tense. food quite good, and certainly the best spotted dick I've ever ever eaten! Nice garden but bar area dark and no atmosphere

In terms of the beer the Cotleigh and Tawny ales were beautiful and well kept. We dined there on a Tuesday evening and were glad we booked as all tables got filled and some had to eat outside . The food was excellent, great choices, nicely prepared and presented and tasty. The waiting staff knew about their beers and knew about the food and offered changes to accomodate the more "fussy" eaters. A nice environment, with a Landlady who was serving beers, food and involved with all customers, not just regulars. I noted previous comments about eating there on Sundays. We struggled to find many decent pubs that did meaningful food on a Sunday evening in that area- nearly had to resort to a chain pub in Taunton to eat.

very efficient staff, nice, not overpriced food and reasonable if not brilliant choice of real ales ( Exmoor Gold was reasonably kept ). Beautiful garden and location. My wife tells me that that the ladies loo is not fit for purpose ! That aside we would go again. The evening menu looks really tempting.

My wife and I visited this pub on a Sunday evening. We had seen the evening adverised as "curry night for 6.99" and when we arrived there was also a blackboard outside advertising this. I ordered 2 drinks and asked about the food. The barmaid said they didn't usally serve food on a Sunday! When I questioned this the Landlady came over to explain that the Curry was reserved for "my regulars" but we could have some of her home made lasagne instead. She didn't smile once while we were there and she spent most of the time chatting with her freinds. Felt very unwelcome. The lasgne turned out to be mince topped with melted cheese with a piece of garlic bread with nothing else; not even a piece of lettuce and it was horrible. We ate and went to to leave. We were charged 9 each for the "lasagne"! Wont be going back

Visited on Saturday lunchtime after a walk in the snow on the Quantocks.
4 handpumps - Exmoor Ale, Exmoor Gold, Cotleigh Tawny and St Austell HSD. Why do all the pubs in this area all sell Exmoor, Cotleigh, St Austell, Otter zzzzzzzzzz. They're very nice but why can't someone ring the changes and get something different, there are plenty of good local breweries in Somerset and Devon .
Anyway, the Exmoor Gold was fine; service ok but silent. A few lunch time diners sitting by the log fire - very quaint!

Popped in here while on a long cycle ride (pub crawl) and got ignored by the bar staff who were busy nattering. Eventually got served, and had an enjoyable pint in their very pleasant garden

Great location and obviously fantastic if you're known. Otherwise you feel a bit like an alien walking through the door. Food was adequate, service quite good, would like to go back on a summers day to really reap the benefits.

The staff must have read the reviews on BITE as we called in this weekend and had a completely different experience - a very warm welcome and were served both ales and food in a very efficient and friendly manner - so felt compelled to add this update to my last post. The St Austell's HSD was in fine condition and the food was very good although the menu is a little pedestrian for a pub that is trying to be a restaurant.

Lovely old thatched place in beautiful setting, very picturesque. Food is fine and interior cosy if a bit cramped. Agree with comments re staff, I made a comment to one of the staff about how beautiful the pub was and was given a shrug and she turned her back-felt slightly offended!
|
Nice pub, nice location and good beer. The staff seem to be quite willing to serve locals, but reluctant to serve anyone else with the same enthusiasm, which puts one off somewhat, which is a pity. Must try harder.

We often stop here for a pint and a bite when travelling to friends in Minehead - food and ales are OK, service is a bit slow and the staff seem to think they are doing you a favour by taking your money. Nevertheless, if you ignore the staff it's a convenient stop.

We had a nice lunch in here the other day. 3 ales, good food, seats by the fire. The garden looked pretty nice too, it will be nice to enjoy a pint there on a summer evening, streamside, next to a lovely thatched roof pub.
|
Obviously a gastropub and geared up for the eveings service. Beer adequate but happy to move on.
Bar staff need to remember that the pub is for all and not just them.
|
Excellent pint of Cotleigh and an Exmoor to follow. Bit clicky but push in at the bar and try all the beers. Best to be a local, I think.
|
nice pub in nice location, decent food and beer. service was friendly but slow.
|
We had an enjoyable lunch here last November, served by a friendly woman that I believe was the land lady.
|
Great pub if you enjoy being ignored by the bar staff. No wonder Auberon Waugh, who lived nearby, was such an miserable old cove.
