A decent enough pub in terms of beer quality and traditional interior, but £3.80 for a Deuchars IPA (even given its location) is excessive (the Haymarket over the road sold the same beer for £3.35 on the same day).

This pub should be absolutey brilliant but on recent visits there has been no beer available (cask ales) and I have now chosen the Haymarket as a better bet.

This place has some serious personality and I am glad to hear that the building is listed. It has some amazing stained glass windows and the interior has a nice old world charm to it. The selection of ales was good and even included Triple fff Moondance from way down in Hampshire. Definitely worth a visit.

Sorry to hear about problems below - bad news. I was there September 2010 and my notes say it had several ales available (all Scottish except Spitfire) - I had Caledonian 80/. Good quality, busy, good craic with punters and people enjoying themselves. No problems.

Been visiting this pub for almost 20 years and in that time I have not had any complaints. Apart form the odd occasion when the beer I wanted was sold out.
It went under a bit of a renovation about 6 months ago. They changed the bar area and brought in a couple of stand beside tables. Nothing too drastic like tidying up the toilets.
Anyway the place has totally changed in staff, atmosphere and service. Whoever now owns this place must be using it for staff training as they have a big problem pouring a pint, serving customers before their mates, understanding English or Scottish.
When it returns to the way it used to be I will return.
PS Make sure you check your change. Two complaints from different customers whilst I had 2 pints says something.

I went there last night with a mate, played a fruit machine situated at door beside bar and went to toilet after losing 25 odd quid (big deal it happens) and after coming back my mate informed me a uniformed staff member named Cameron rushed up to it from behind the bar as soon as i had walked away proceeded to play it in between working and serving customers. i took exception to this considering it's a bit off colour to see a staff member blatantly scam the machines/customers like that as soon as a customers back is turned and asked him if he was working which he denied though it was obvious he was and was wearing uniform, going back and forth behind bar serving food etc, i just saw this as scamming behaviour and stated it so to him which he arrogantly chuckled at and 5 mins later when i tried to buy another drink and was told i would'nt be served by a staff member cos "Cameron" said so and after going up to him to find out what the actual problem was i was bemused to be told "i was barred" (for no stated reason) and to "get out" so it's a fine pub as long as you do not question certain staff members if they are obviously scamming customers playing cash game machines and abusing positions of authority by issuing bans when a customer enquires what they are playing at as they simply throw you out whilst laughing arrogantly, it was a very chavvish way to behave and i expected better from a place that normally has a happy atmosphere most times but it has evidently gone slightly downhill recently.

Just since I'm passing - Betty Ford's warning to avoid the Caley Ale House will become unnecessary in two years or so when it's demolished to make way for a tram line. Ryrie's should not be affected.

Deuchars in top nick at 2.19. Good staff. They seem to do decent looking food (nothing home made, I suspect) at very reasonable prices. But there's something a bit odd about it - perhaps to do with some rather strange 'residents'. Betty Ford is right, though: avoid the one on the other side of the station.

A great bar; lovely building. Always liked going there but it's been ruined with all the 'sports bar' vibe they have presently.

It's a good place to stop of this, either coming or going to the train station. A decent pint, friendly bar staff, and some right characters to be found. I've lost count of the number of times I have missed the train after stopping in here!

Still one of the best 80/' in town staff friendly enough bar can get tacky when. and it can get busy on match days and nights. Still one of the best of its kind in Edinburgh come off the train at Haymarket avoid the Caley Ale House and drop in here.

I go here most nights after work and must say that the pub has a great atmosphere - when busy or empty - and also has truely friendly staff.
