Dover Lock, Abramback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Moored up here on a Tuesday evening & wanted to get some food. The sign stated food served all day every day... Went in and it was desolate bar a lonely looking barman. I asked if food was being served but was told food was only available on a Friday evening? Such a shame as it is a nice looking pub inside and has bags of potential

Located on the canal bank close to Pennington Nature reserve it seems an ideal spot for a thriving pub and is the ony one on the canal for a good few miles. I have only ever been in from the canalside so I don't know what the surrounding area is like, but from the patio area there are not many houses n close proximaty.
The food and drink were fine, and the service was courteous. Did have cask on (didn't try it) and a reasonable selection of draughts/bottles. I have only visited during the day and got the impression that the overall trade was not great, it does have sport but surely there must be an opportunity to make this a more upmarket/destination place

I suspect you would see the problem on a cold january night boosteruk!

I also recently went to the Dover Lock after a walk along the canal with my dog, i found the staff very welcoming. I sat outside on the veranda with my dog and drank my well deserved pint. I intend to go back there with my wife and son to have a meal in what seems like a clean & friendly pub. I was looking at the menu whilst i was there and thought the prices very reasonable. The Guiness i had was second to none, one of the best i had drank in a long time. As for the policy on dogs i was discussing this with a fellow dog walker who was sat across from me. We both agreed we would not expect a pub which serves food to allow dogs in with the exception of guide dogs, neither of us could think of a pub which does allow dogs, with a large seating area outside i cannot see the problem.

Let's clear one or two things up here. Firstly, the 'rough estate' referred to is virtually Platt Bridge, and there are 4 or 5 pubs closed than the Dover. Bob and Sue ran a nice pub with no problems with scrotes or behaviour, though they inherited it with prevailing problems. The trouble is Bob and Sue wanted out pretty much as soon as they were in, so there wasn't much incentive to make a big effort, though the beer was always good, I thought the food was average and a bit pricey and was the beer. The new owners have smartened the place up a bit and it's good to see. Beer has come down 20p per pint, and the menu is good and very reasonably priced. We are there a few weeks back and the food was OK but not great - no better than typical chain fayre and similarly priced. The BIG disappointment for me is that they don't allow dogs. It is a semi-rural pub on popular walking trails and was a great place for me to escape to with the dog but no more sadly.

We went to the dover lock on saturday, we only went out for tea and a couple of drinks, we ended up staying until last orders! The atmosphere was great, a warm and friendly welcome from Carol and George and all their staff, a proper pub where even people you had never met before all chatted and had a great laugh, the karaoke was great fun too, can't wait for my duet!! We will certainly be paying another visit, great fun great night, what more can you ask for

If anyone would care to look at the dates some of the reviews were posted they would realize they are pre Bob and Sue. This pub is for families and animals and everyone gets along just fine. No loud music and the families play pool together. The food is excellant and well priced. As for the rough estate, you sure you were at the right Dover Lock pal.

This pub is currently the best in wigan, friendly everyone welcome including dogs, seems like the new owners want to create god's waiting room one foot in grave and hungry and you are welcome, boy are they in for a shock, as most of the community welcome interarct with young people and animals, maybe a bit of research wouldn't have gone a miss. what works in Worsey might not work in Wigan , how I wish Bob and Sue were staying and as for you Carol stay in Worsley, every heard of not re-inventing the wheel

I only hope that the NEW landlord is not trying to create an elitist pub, already been done and failed. As it is, Bob has indeed created a fine establishment with a great atmosphere, superb quality food at ECONOMICAL prices and good beer. As 'mine host' he is second to none, I will be sorry to see him go. What is promised we already have in abundance. My family and myself regularly enjoy meals here, both during the day and at weekends. In fact we've just introduced our latest grandchild last night! As far as swearing etc, as commented, wouldn't be allowed by Bob, although I've never heard it anyway. I live near to the pub, although it is not my 'local', maybe I'm on that 'rough estate'. Well if you've +320K, you can live on that estate with me!! Will keep an eye on developements and hopefully it will stay as Bob leaves it. PS. I like playing pool with sons and grandsons, so NEW LANDLORD you're off to a negative already matey.

OUR AIM IS TO CREATE AN ENVIROMENT WERE FAMILIES, COUPLES AND THE OLDER GENERATION CAN COME ALONG TO ENJOY A NICE DAY OR EVENING OUT WITH AN EXCELLENT RANGE OF FOOD AND DRINK TO CHOOSE FROM AND HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY STAFF TO SERVE. SO GIVE IT A TRY I AM SURE THE VISIT WILL BE WORTH YOUR WHILE.

The previous two comments I can only DISAGREE with, the pub was taken over by a very good publican in 2007, the guest ales are of a high quality with an extensive pub menu. I have never visited The Dover Lock and heard loud swearing, the landlord will not put up with it, as regards the "rough estate" that one remains a mystery to me, the only estate that is vaguely near to the pub is around one mile away which has it's own local, this pub is in a very picturesque position, with large new build private houses within a quarter of a mile, well worth a visit and Bob the landlord is a great host.

Nice pub with a couple of ales and large beer garden, but as previously noted, it's on the edge of a rough estate so don't expect a 'real ale' crowd.
|
Canalside pub with good beer and excellent food. In the middle of a former mining area which is now very green. Visited three times recently, each visit notable for the amount of loud swearing going on by other customers - not one for families or the meek and mild.
