Great place for a pint and some food after a walk along Hadrian's Wall. We called in on a wet and windy mid-week lunchtime to find the place pretty well packed, which given it's relative remoteness says quite a lot about the place. The food was excellent and the beer was a cut above. As I wasn't driving I took full advantage and had a pint of Allendale Pale Ale at 5.5ish percent and a fantastic pint and a half of Maxim at 6 percent. Both were the best beers of our recent holiday. The staff are great too - all very friendly and seemed to be here, there and everywhere; from the bar, to the hotel reception area, to food service and waiting tables. Will definitely be back when in the area again.

Busy pub, efficiently run. Great beer selection and fantastic food.

Busy pub because of proximity to the wall but also deservedly so because of the selection of ales and immense servings of decent food...ideal if you've been walking. Accomodation can be noisy and a bit basic.

Good location for those visiting Vindolanda and/or Hadrian's Wall and despite it having accomodation and a large menu it hasn't forgotten it is a pub. The Twice Brewed Bitter was excellent on a recent visit, three other beers were on tap plus a good selection of bottled beers. Good hearty food available for those walking Hadrian's Wall.

Welcome hostelry for walkers. Four beers on hand pump when we visited (mid November) including the refreshing Twice Brewed Bitter, from Yates Brewery. Didn't try the food but sounded hearty and homemade just what you want after a day walking.

Found it a busy place during a couple of evenings spent there. As said by someone else, food takes a while but worth it. Staff very good behind the bar. They had a large group check in, they were handled in a very efficient manner, and out of the way quickly. Great place to enjoy a summers evening watching the local version of Quoits being played with steel rings and a peg buried in a clay pit. Very friendly atmosphere. Good view of Hadrian's Wall, or the cattle which wander across the roadway of an evening.

Love this place. Its just right when out hiking in the country and you need to rest up a while.

Still a good place for real ales although they cut down in the winter, B & B and you can walk to the Milecastle Inn about 2 miles to the west for a couple of good pints. A good pair.

Nice little boozer, if you're hiking Hadrian's Wall, which is within eyesight. Only pub for miles, so well frequented by YHA hostellers nearby. Great premises, long thin bar area, with a sort of 'comfy lounge' off the main bar where no food or smoking is allowed. Food was ok, but you may have to wait 30mins for it at busy times (after 6pm). They have a small terrace area at the back, for those sunny afternoons/evenings, which they really could improve and make much more of (it looked 'unfinished', work in progress I hope)..! TJ
