Very friendly. Good food and decent portions (not like previous post). My favourite beer (Dark Star's Hophead) and a decent play area in a lovely garden with a climbing frame, slide and a couple of swings. Will definitely be coming back.

Nice venue, more of a gastropub/dining room. The beer was good, well kept. Went there on Jubilee monday which was a mistake. They were either too busy or understaffed or both. We had 2 courses, food was nice and actually reasonable portions but we waited an age for the food to arrive and the staff were not attentive at all. We had to ask for everything even to place our food order. When we mentioned the service was slow and not very good the response back was "well there's not much we can do about that!" Hmm not rushing back there.

Excellent beers from the barrel, Harveys Sussex and Darkstar hophead were on when I visited. Secluded location and a large and very nice garden out the back. Food stupidly overpriced and not worth it.

Having heard a great deal about the food, we dined here recently, the food is extremely good, but mean in size and very expensive. the beer is excellent and the service both friendly and efficient. A great pub for a special occasion, but not one for the ravenous!

Rather more restaurant than pub.Not cheap and the portion sizes are a bit on the small side. Can't fault the actual place - the garden and covered patio are especially nice. The beer is good as is the food and the staff friendly and helpful, but if you are looking for a good hearty pub feed then this is not the place.

My first visit to this pub was on a Sunday lunch time and it was packed and we felt our muddy hiking boots would be rather unwelcome. Had another go last Saturday lunch time and while busy, there was a free table in the bar area and hikers and dog walkers are most welcome.

The pub side of things is excellent, the Dark Star Old Ale was superb. They also had a couple of other ales, a number of ciders and a huge list of whiskies.

The food is expensive but it is also very good with an emphasis towards
home made, locally sourced and organic fare. They sell home made bread too, 1.95 for a loaf is on the high side but it is very good bread.

The staff very friendly and helpfull too.

The only down side is the number of screaming brats infesting the place.

Nice pub, lovely garden, Lunchtime menu (Garden) disappointing, restaurant menu very expensive. After one drink decided to go to another pub for lunch. We won't be going back.

Out-of-the-way pub, but foodies in the know find it. Although primarily a restaurant, there are likely to be two or three real ales served from the barrel, usually from local breweries. When I called they were all hoppy, golden ales. Attractive, quiet garden, excellent for a relaxing Summer afternoon. Closed Sunday eves.

After much hype we were really looking forward to lunching at the Jolly Sportsman especially having trekked across Sussex through a tempest. While many things were immediately welcoming and service good the food was a real disappointment. High prices, mean portions, poor quality steak, uninspired dishes (fish pie, cottage pie, curry)and vegetables extra when frankly you would have expected steamed veg as standard. We left very disappointed and had to eat a hearty evening meal when we would have expected to need only a light salad. Shame really.

Have been there twice and thoroughly enjoyed it each time - especially the selection of local beers from the cask (the only way to serve beer in my opinion, though virtually unknown in my native Yorkshire, where the tight sparkler sadly reigns)!!! Good food and not over-priced either.

Love it. Either a true "gastropub", or a restaurant blessed to be in the middle of beautiful quiet countryside.
Fabulous local sourced food, better than most restaurants anywhere (although thats easy if you live in Brighton). Great wine, good beer too. Friendly staff. Beautiful garden. A real gem!

Great setting and lovely garden for children.
Good selection of beers and ciders. Good food. Although it has quite a posh restaurant area, they still cater for walkers, dogs and countryside users, which is a credit to the owners. Too many country gasto pubs forget who the locals are and ignore their needs.
Well worth a visit.

We love this pub. Very good food, nice staff and a warm atmosphere. Lovely setting too, down a winding little lane. Like the fact you can either eat in the cosy bar or the more formal restaurant.

Tucked away off a small rural road between Lewes and Haywards Heath, this Pub is a bit of an enigma.

Primarily a "foodie" pub, it also caters for the discering beer drinker as well, with constantly changing beer offerings ,and straight from the barrel.
Also a good choice (up to 6 ) Ciders.

Friendly staff and pleasant surroundings, good garden to sit in if the weather is fine.

A gastro restaurant pub which still keeps a bar and a place for regulars. Always a warm welcome from the staff and the food is top quality. Chef previously had a restaurant in Tunbridge Wells. Usually two locally independent brewery real ales in good condition. Ideally placed for walkers. Worth calling by - but beware, as the pub is closed Sunday evening and Mondays.

Bit smoky at the pub when the regulars come in, but go at about 4 or 5 on a Saturday evening in winter, nurse your mulled ale (mulled at the table with a poker heated in the open log fire) - LOVELY. Excellent, locally-sourced food served 6 days a week,
