user reviews of the Hobgoblin, High Wycombe

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This historic pub has been tastefully refurbished and reopened earlier this year under its original name, "The Three Tuns". A range of ale very reasonably priced but over-endowed with TV screens (showing 2 different football matches when I was there).

Reasonable, no more or less, which makes it better in my view than the alternatives in the centre of the town.

The best thing (and only thing) about this pub without a doubt is the presence of the international girl of mystery often at the bar......she is a wonderful and attractive lady, full of cheer, hospitality, humour and many other positive qualities.....if only she was in all the Wycombe pubs, then Wycombe would be saved !

Dead quiet on a Sunday lunchtime inasmuch as I was the only customer in at 12.45pm (and the barman's first customer from opening at 12pm). Low-ceilinged, dark-beamed, narrow high street boozer offering 7 real ales, an eclectic jukebox (they even had Black Flag) and regular live music. The Loddon Hocus Pocus was in well-kept condition and the odd items of breweriana adorning the walls were interesting touches. A bit of a beacon amid the decline of High Wycombe and with The Antelope closing its doors recently, it and The Falcon remain the only High Street pubs left. .

Not many people in on a Tuesday night. I spied the juke box, did my usual scan for Nick Cave - delighted to see many tracks there - put on "Easy Money".

Everyone left.

Philistines. :-)

This would be my local if I lived here.

If you like real ale this is a great pub. It almost always has hobgoblin and rev James on and another couple of great beers. It's also got a bit of character.
PerivaleElvis - 12 Jan 2013 00:56
All true but you forgot the small matter of buying in sprits and pocketing the cash. Along with splitting the ents budget with a bar man who in return set up his lap top and played ITUNES all night.
Both no longer work for the brewery and are barred for life
The new manager has been delayed till September but on a plus note the reverend James is awesome and the locals are starting to return slowly
Also the old landlord has been seen having several meetings with the area manager so fingers crossed he might be going back in

speedo - 6 Aug 2012 12:48
Karen Merritt the general manager was dismissed / resigned on 16/6/2012
Due to declining sales and stock loss
Currently being held by the assistant manager and a new manager is to be appointed in august.
she will not be missed by many of the locals after watching it turn into a student dive
Just hope they get the old place back to the great pub it used to be

Popped back in for a quick pint on my way through town after not visiting for a few months and to say I was shocked would be an understatement! Dirty stained tables covered in used glasses lights hanging down from the ceiling and a chef in stained jeans and a tee shirt covered in food at the bar.
Not a sign of one of the many regulars that haunted this grand old place (I later found that most had moved on to friendlier parts)
The rev James was cloudy (it was like a glass of fog) and when i asked the bar maid "Karen" for an exchange the verbal abuse and foul language was just unbelievable.
after an extended argument I was allowed a pint of cider (did not wish to risk another ale) and moved to the beer garden to be met by a group of tattooed homeless looking urchins and the sounds of thrash metal at 3 in the afternoon .
gone are the varnished tables to be replaced by matt black paint covered in graffiti and the walls are now covered in stained mouldy posters advertising drum and bass nights and death metal bands .
Even the old cherry tree has been hacked to within an inch of its life or died in embarrassment.
Just before leaving I though I would chance the toilets? Oh another dire mistake, two urinals were pouring their contents over the already covered floor and a blocked toilet had emptied its contents as well. With the over powering stench I beat retreat
On the whole a pub that was starting to come back to life has been ruined again and one to avoid at all costs until it does! What happened to the landlord? Why go to the extent of putting all the effort into the real ales, cleaning the place up to then hand it over to such obnoxious woman

Nice pub, good garden, good beer and good food. Shame about the landlady. The ladies and mens toilets need sorting out.
UglyDuckling - 26 Dec 2011 15:15
A place where you will feel and be treated like a local.. Many cross sections of society feel at home here.. Reasonable prices..
TheShaolinPunk - 4 Nov 2011 00:54
Rough & ready pub that stretches far into the distance until you meet a TV or someone playing 'Guitar Hero'. So I stay near the entrance - it's quieter. Good range of 6 or so (common) ales such as 6X, Bombardier & London Pride. Have they got the throughput to warrant such a number? I had the Reverend James at 3.30/pint - it was quite nice so more trips will be planned.
Booze_Allen - 22 Sep 2011 20:51
Ok pub.Yes not as good as its Reading namesake, but still a good place.3 or 4 ales that are well kept.
funky - 5 Aug 2011 20:13
all ways good for an ale or two there is nothing else in the aera to match it for quality
nero555 - 1 Mar 2011 17:08
nice little pub and after a quick crawl of wycombe with out doubt the best by far.

Me and the other half class this as our local - Before its temporary closure it was an absolute gem, brilliant staff, atmosphere and music but since its reopened and been 'refurbished' we think it's lost a lot of its charm. For starters it is far too bright and 'cold' at the top end of the pub where the main entrance is. It used to be a dark, cosy little area where you could sit for hours on end and talk - now theres not really anywhere you can truly relax and I think its a great shame.

The bar area seems bare, there are no longer any photos or added decor around and this really has taken away a lot of the pubs character.

The bar staff though I still think are great although a few of the old guard have moved on. A big loss is the great live DJ sets they used to have in the beer garden, now replaced with simple music pumped from the jukebox.

Beer is ok, currently 3.20 ish for a Guinness.

I just wish they would tone down the lighting at the top end of the pub and get a little more decor up to make it a little bit more welcoming again!
mikeyr1234 - 18 Jan 2011 00:08
This pub no longer has free wi-fi. but what it does have is a very unfriendly and rather rude femail person behind the bar. It really needs someone with a bit of personality.
delpus - 15 Jan 2011 11:46
Appears to suffer from a continual change of licensee and now looks very sad indeed. It would be brilliant if it could match its namesake in Reading.
mcroyal - 30 Nov 2010 09:17
Now Reopened

Jukebox is even better than before...now has 35,000 tracks on it..so pleanty to choose from.
mr_s1973 - 2 Nov 2010 13:51
Now closed, future uncertain. Does any one have any news?
delpus - 18 Oct 2010 08:24
The best pub by far, great staff, great customers, great atmosphere a real treat!
I walked in to the Hobgoblin and didnt know what to expect, the place looked run down from the outside, but once you get inside its the best kept secret in High Wycombe. A real proper old pub with lots of character and charm. No chair is the same, no table is the same, its very special. It has a great jukebox I tried a pint of their own ale Hobgoblin and my mate had a Green Goblin one of their bottled cider. The barman was very friendly and chatted to me as he poured my pint, in a lovely Hobgoblin glass. The price was good and the pint was very good. Im going back there when Im in High Wycombe next week, and Im very much looking forward to it.

Its years since I've been to a Hobgoblin - I don't think they're still owned by Wychwood. So, cue 5.30 on a Tues evening in April.

The place has that dark, woodeny-firkiny-hogsheady feel which I must admit I quite like, althouggh I understand why people use the words dingy and characterless on occasions. There were only about a dozen punters, so can't say too much about the clientele. Two bar staff on, chatting with the locals, but as soon as I rolled up to the bar, one was straight over to me. So a tick for attentiveness. The music was a little on the loud side, and they looked to be gearing up for either some live music or a DJ (I didn't check whether that was a regular feature). I only had time for a couple of pints of Mad Hatter (Wychwood) which was in reasonable condition.

I'd certainly go back, but I might try a couple of the other pubs in town first.
Mercurial - 16 Apr 2008 10:31
Nicest bunch of people in here, loads of beers to choose, would definitely go back when I am next in town.
jinglebell - 15 Feb 2008 14:10
Was A good Pub when known as the Three Tuns. Is now run by Yoof wiv Wierd Facial Hair And Multiple Piercings for Yoof wiv Wierd Facial Hair And Multiple Piercings. Also attracts postmen, some of whom have piercings and facial hair. This is the general theme of the pub now. Even for the women. If you know High Wycombe then you will appreciate that bearded women fetch very high prices in these parts.Good place to hang out if desperate or just retarded.Has toilets you can go to cry in for a while.
TheMeekon - 19 Nov 2007 16:50
a pub with character.. frequented by a complete cross section of the community (minus chavs)
SuperSharpShooter - 11 Aug 2007 13:31
dark dingy and dirty wipe your feet when you leave if you ever dare to go in
chunky35 - 30 Nov 2006 12:25
Well what can we say, ground floor on various levels, wood and stone not bad. Plenty of bar but mind your head if you're tall, 5'10" ish and above, duck or Grouse. Myself and friends like the look, dark and old(one or two have said it's full of weirdo's) never fear he was put right. It has a comfortable atmosphere, good beer (real ales and Guinnes) seems genuine people frequent the place unlike some of the other local beer haunts. All in all it's my favourite pub and rated quite well by the boys on the hill(that's not Dawes Hill by the way).
zukster - 21 Oct 2006 02:16
I agree. The Hobgoblin in the only decent pub in Wycombe at the moment.

A good selection of ales, well looked after.

All sorts of people frequent the establishment - from students, to bikers, to theatre goers...

My only criticism would be that it gets very smoky.
bonesdalglish - 19 Oct 2006 20:52
The ONLY decent pub with decent people in! Rock on Hobbo!!!! and it is most certainly NOT a student haunt?!?!!
tokoloshe - 8 Oct 2006 21:38

good ole Hob.. Recently Gill left and had a farewell party.. there some pictures somwhere on the net(ajhconcepts .com/bellevue).

Dunno about its future but its still the best pub in town...
keep on rockin :)

An interesting pub. It seems very run down and tatty and the Windows look like they haven't been cleaned in years. Inside the beer selection is good but the quality is sometimes questionable. Despite the general look of the pub the staff always seem friendly. Not the sort of place I would visit often but not bad at all.
Gueuzefan - 22 May 2006 11:28
Scruffy, down at heel pub in the High St which is equally scruffy so fits in well. Full of freaks and other interesting characters, good choice of real ales (Bass for example)and a far better night out than at the Weatherspoons nearby.
paddymiguel - 30 Nov 2004 14:07
Top pub for real people and top jukebox with some excellent tunes.Only pub in wycombe with decent music. The landlady Jill spoils the place with dance rubbish though.
brian - 7 Nov 2004 18:01
hobgoblin rules. nice one bruvva

cock-on-top - 30 Sep 2004 15:43
Bouncers on the door, not nice and ask for entrance fee even when pub not busy.

When have got in staff friendly and beer fine, music sounds good (from the street).
ian - 8 Aug 2004 14:55
Small pub, friendly bar staff. The beer is good and they have good deals on for students during the week.

Admittedly it is a very cliquey pub, but there are people of all ages there. Not a family pub, one for you and your mates.
anonymous - 25 Mar 2004 12:21
its a great pub the staff are friendly and you can let youre hair down coz no gives a damn and watching the frekish and unique is fun.... if youre going say hello from Bob
Bob - 1 Nov 2003 15:30
Staff and locals very stand offish but a nice enough place if you're there for a sneaky pint with a couple of mates before moving on.
Matthew - 11 Aug 2003 08:45
Well, back in the day, 1992-1997 it was a hippy/punk/metalhead/goth venue
and a few other eccentrics that defy classification...nothing wrong with that-super in fact, however the split level floors were a bit wobbly and the beer garden was not worth the effort-since then ive been back once and the crowd has changed-its a student venue still but a little more mainstream-shame really...
belgravian - 14 Jul 2003 12:23
