A very dog friendly pub / hotel with a good selection of beers (usually at least one Cotleigh on, plus others) Only criticism is that it doesn't open 'till 6pm on a Saturday and thus misses out on my 'early doors' trade whilst the wife is otherwise engaged shopping etc. There's usually a queue outside by 6pm as well.

A little to foody and hotel like for me. (yes i know that it is one) We just had the one as we felt a little scruffy in our wet walking gear.

We dropped in on a busy Saturday lunchtime when there was a wedding party in the restuarant area and the bar was pretty busy too. We were wondering how long we'd have to wait for our food but it arrived promptly and in good shape. Friendly service and a decent pint of Exmoor. As someone else has commented, this is more a hotel than a pub, but it has a good atmosphere and appears to be popular with locals as well as with visitors.

had the pleasure of returning to dulverton on business pop in to a few pubs and had a good pint in the lion, they had a thing called cast mark in there now which, so i was told meant they had met a high standard with their ales. had the usual Exmoors but now there is the gold instead of the fox (very nice) and a Cotliegh, but had a fourth pump for guest ones had a very nice Otter bitter on. still a good place for a pint of real ale top marks.

lovely real ales with friendly staff. had a great evening with my partner chatting to the bar man about the town and the couple of local people in the bar. it was a relaxed atmosphere and felt quite at home. will definitely be back on my next visit to Dulverton which is a beautiful little town. top marks for the ale and good to have friendly locals to talk to. liked the dining area that was close to the bar but had a clear divide so you did not feel you were in a restaurant and still in a bar. I would recommend this place to anyone that enjoyed a relaxing evening, with good selection of drinks to choose from

i don't agree with the last two comments at all. stayed in the hotel recently and had a wonderful stay in a newly renovated room. the food was lovely and good value and the beers were the best in town as opposed to flat in one other pub and extremely cold ales in another. bar staff were friendly and helpful. had a very nice stay and definitely be back soon.

Friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. More a hotel bar than a pub as the name suggests, and probably because to compete with the Bridge Inn - the real and locals pub - it makes sense to be different. Two Exmoor beers (Ale and Fox) are regulars plus one guest from the area. Rather more than sales demand in the winter months seems to me and I heard regulars bad mouthing the guest beer (Exeter brewery). Food OK but not as original and interesting as the range at the Bridge. We stayed there and at breakfast the lunch menu board was already on display with "sold out" stickers. How can that be? Only because its the same old menu list that never changes except for availability. Any kitchen that serves up powdered egg for its scrambled eggs and tinned mushrooms is out of touch with 2009 cooking standards. So lots could improve but its still a nice place for a pint and Dulverton is really unspoiled and attractive.

I just cannot understand why spit is complaining about Exmoor ales being served here. Just stop a second and think about where you are: EXMOOR The beer was fine but the service left something to be desired. A bored looking barman in a hoodie seemed more interested in reading the papars than serving customers. I wasnt sure if this was because it was empty or the reason why it was empty. Altogether a rather souless place, no pensioners (or anyone else) around. need to try much harder I think

As my last comment stated a while back, still perfect. Cant say anything bad about the place. Food, Ale and Service was the best. Hotel was clean and warm for the cold week in january that i was there!!! Loved my visit to the lion for a second time and look forward to visiting the place again. Well done all at the Lion Hotel had a great weekend in your company. 10/10

Trying hard, but missing a few basic points. The sort of place that needs the lighting turning down several notches and the heating turning up lots of notches (*freezing* cold last time I visited early on a cold winter's evening). Food fair to good, but inconsistent. An outstandingly rude older barmaid, but the younger barman very friendly. Ales well-kept - but are Exmoor, which is fine but something else would make a change in this area. There's an old-fashioned feel about this place that draws an OAP crowd for lunch but which doesn't help the general atmosphere. Worth trying but don't go out of your way.

Was working in Dulverton one day recently so nipped in here for a swift lunchtime pint and a snack. Despite ordering just a bowl of chips, I was marshalled out of the bar to be sat in the "eating" area by the waitress. Staff were a little surly and didnt appear to welcome outsiders although the locals were a friendly bunch. Lovely pub inside with a huge roaring fire. Exmoor Ales are the standard here and were lush especially Exmoor Fox. The food when it was arrived was very good although with the scorn I was served, I'm surprised it wasnt thrown at me. Perhaps I just caught them on a bad day.

Nice old hotel/pub, on the edge of Exmoor National Park. Quaint little village Dulverton, which has the only cash machine for miles around (hence this pubs address, Bank Square)! Useful to know if you're in the Exmoor area and your cash is waning..! TJ
