Superb beer. Superb michelin standard food. Superb staff. If only it was my local...heaven.

I am most pleased to announce that Robert is back at The Red Lion in Stodmarsh. His bubbly personality only adds to the fabulous atmosphere in what must be one of Britain's finest pubs. The establishment is full of olde worlde character and charm. Most illuminating!

I come here as often as possible but recently found that Robert, the charismatic innkeeper no longer runs the establishment. My immediate worries were soon allayed as he has passed The Red Lion over to his daughter who runs it superbly. The beer is in great nick and prices for beer and food very reasonable. One of Britains best pubs and I dont say that lightly.

A lovely old pub, very interesting inside and with beer served straight from the cask. However, the pint I tried was not of the best quality, and not sure why there was loud music being played from behind the bar.

awesome pub!!
Pub packed floor to ceiling with all manner of objects, could spend hours just looking at them!! but that would be denying yourself a chance to enjoy some of the finest food from a clearly talented chef.Very well thought out menu using locally sourced ingredients, quite a suprise to find food of this quality in a pub that you could never find by accident, puts many so called restaurants to shame.Couple this with some eccentric behaviour of the staff and especially Robert the Innkeeper you have the perfect non-corporate establishment.Enjoy

Visually, one of the most beatiful and cozy pubs in Kent and the food very nice... except for the instant coffee. The staff however, clearly take pride in being among the rudest in Kent. Our waitress seemed irritated to see us from the start, never smiled. They do not serve chips - and don't insult them by asking for them. It is apparently a taboo in Stodmarsh. She never brought our side dishes and never checked the table such that we could tell her. Also, if you are paying cash, you better bring exact change because they DO NOT have change for large notes.

Stumbled across the Red Lion on a walk from Canterbury. What a hidden delight! I stopped relying on random public houses for hospitality and good beer and food several years ago and would never cross the threshold of a pub I had not researched well beforehand. So to stumble across this one on a Sunday lunchtime ("We recommend you book two weeks in advance" said the very pleasant maitre d'/ barman, "but we will find you a place don't worry") and have such a lovely experience was pleasing. Inside was full of hops, squashes, eggs and jam for sale and quirky bits and pieces and provided a lovely atmosphere.
The pub garden contains an array of animals including chickens, ducks and rabbits and is very pleasant . We sat there under the October sunshine with a bottle of Chianti and Rioja, and ate a fabulous roast lunch. You may find a cheaper lunch elsewhere, but you'll be hard pushed to find a better and more hospitable establishment .
Bravo!

Possibly the best pub in the world! We stopped in for a pint before going walking through the adjacent marshes and loved it so much we walked straight back two hours later for a couple more pints. The decor was lovely and layout great, but it's more a gastro pub than drinking establishment. The couple next to us asked to compliment the chef and landlord had to say "fully booked" to phone enquires, so I'm guessing the cuisine is excellent. But, as others have mentioned before, the landlord is the star of the show. What a gentleman! We couldn't have been made more welcome. The beer was great and there's accommodation, too. Delightful setting in deepest Kent.

What an amazing place and an amazing landlord, no Innkeeper! IPA from the cask on the bar was super and the food was lovely. Fresh Hythe scallops, and Dexter rib eye steak in medeira and stilton sauce (cooked to perfection) with fresh veg. Rammed with customers, but Robert and his staff were swift efficient and friendly. I have not enjoyed a meal and an evening out so much for a very long time. Also love Robert's new name for me "Innkeeperess". Might be an idea to book as it was so busy on a Friday Night. Go with an open mind and prepare for it to be blown!!!!

Superb pub.. Fantastic food and wonderful ales all ready straight from the barrel.. if Robert hasn't got there first..! Lovely interior with loads to see in a wonderful chaotic fashion.. what more do you need? First rate.

A real gem. Fantastic pub with quirky interesting interior, great beer and fab local food. Robert the landlord is a real character and a breath of fresh air. Visit it and enjoy.

Called in this afternoon but too late for food. I'd cycled passed the pub a few weeks ago whilst cycling between Canterbury and Sandwich and back, and saw the 2CV pick up outside. A very friendly welcome from Robert who'd appeared in the documentary about Red Lion pubs. Wonderfully cluttered decor. I ignored the IPA on gravity which I don't care for but plumped for the Speckled Hen. Unfortunately I later discovered this is either top pressue or keg. We MUST return for a meal though. What a find!

What a wonderful pub!
I visited it on Saturday evening and was most disapointed that hardly anyone else was there.
The new barman was very good and chatty, the food is pricey but the head chef is an award winner and in Le Routiers. The beer is good but i'd like to see a local beer or micro brewerys offerings on the pump.
the inside of the pub is amazing, with the bar set in the middle and loads of interesting things covering all the walls and every surface filled. dogs are welcome but they will be taught there place by the bossy pub cat, who will swipe any dog walking past.
visit this pub.

it doesn't get any better than this! the landlord, robert, is a whoot! he is always "sharpened" up and ready for some witty banter. stop in at a time when the food rush is not heavy and you will get a true taste of this extraordinary character. the decor of the pub could not be more interesting. the food is incredible. don't miss this one. if you plan on dining book ahead as they are busy during lunch and dinner all week.

The best all round country pub experience I've ever had. The landlord Robert Wingham is a legend in the area and one of the only true innkeepers left in the country.(big moustache, leater apron, plummy accent and always well oiled)The food is award winning the decor is cosy and packed with everything a true country pub should be packed with.IPA and OSH on tap and a full jazz band behind the bar on a Sunday night.Chickens and other wild life roam freely in it's fantastic garden.A must for any one in the Canterbury area.
