user reviews of the White Hart, Grays

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Essexnut would appear to be correct, if today's article on the DaiIy MaiI's site is any indication.

"Knitting enthusiasts particularly welcome", he might add.

"Bring your own black, red, and white wool".

Answer me this though. If Britain First and the rest love England so much, then why do they leave it covered in staffy s h i t, cigarette ends, used scratchcards and old mattresses?

On the way home from Canvey, we had time for a stop in Grays to tick The White Hart & the Theobald which both appear in the 2016 & 2017 GBG’s.

4 ales with the Mauldon Dickens @ 4.0% being on good form. The other ales were all smaller breweries so good to see no National brands on.

Very busy with the whole of the large front bar packed, a band were warming up so I guess this is why it was so busy. We took our drinks and retired to the back bar where there’s a pool table and the continuation of the bar with just a few lager pumps on it.

From my quick visit I can confirm the White Hart is obviously a big part of the local area and has a loyal following, the clientele are slightly rough rounds the edges, but this is Grays after all, a tough town.

A typical workingman's basic pub where beer choice/quality count for an awful lot.The choice of ales encompasses beers from LocALES to further afield.Sports orientated with Sky t.v. on two screens showing different matches on my visit, they also have a variety of games such as darts etc.A beer garden outside has a portable shellfish trailer. The Crouch Vale was 2.75 a pint which seemed reasonable to me. I also visited the nearby Theobald Arms, bothpubs are goodbut the White Hart is the pick.

Rowdy pub, could do with face lift, me thinks Baldy52 is landlord the way he describes it!

Essexnut seems a bit confused and paranoid about the pubs in Grays.Regarding The White Hart i know they do a lot of work with the local Indian community and they are nearly always full with contractors staying from around the country. I,ve been drinking in there since it re-opened about 4years ago, yes a lot of locals use it and a lot of non regulars use it without any problems. A good sports pub with good beer, staff are friendly and the management are always about for a chat.Only thing essexnut got right was they don,t tolerate yobs which goes for most of the pubs he mentions in Grays (see other pub reviews) Looks like we won,t be seeing him in many Grays pubs, doesn,t it

Locals only, do not like anyone who is not english and a yob!

A pub that has been turned around as the posts testify. A warm spot in my heart for this place as this was where I supped Burton Ale as a 16-year old apprentice in the 1980's. The real ale is consistently good and the place is friendly enough, though if you are unaccustomed to the livelier sort of East London / essex pub then you might find it a bit much on a Friday or Saturday. There are a few sorts who get in there but I feel that the management will soon sort that out (I do not know them but I was watching their reactions to a few suspect customers and I felt they handled the minor situation, some spilt drinks NOT blood, really well). A cracking little pub and firmly on the Grays real ale circuit.

having avoided this place like the plaugue in the early 00's it was a pleasent surprise to find it in good shapem, beer solid and locals in a good mood. Clearly done a lot of good work in the years I have been away. Thought the "pool room" a little basic but all in all a massive improvement. Did lose 2 in the jukebox because I forgot about the game on but lesson learnt.

Good stop for a pre-match pint. They had a big selection of ales on my visit, but I only remember Brewer's Gold (2.50 a pint) - which was in great condition.

It's a massive pub and my group had the right-hand (pool) bar virtually to ourselves. Cheese and ham rolls (1 each) seemed to be the only food on offer on a Saturday lunchtime. Big TVs were showing live sport. There weren't many women in the pub (three customers in total, I think). The staff all seemed very friendly. A lot of hard work has obviously been put into the place, and credit to them.

Another impressive visit to The White Hart at the weekend. Voted S/W Essex Pub of the Year for the last three years, hence our visit. Chris the landlord kindly opened up early for us as we arrived earlier than expected. On hand pump; Brewers Gold, Sharps Special Ale & Everards Original. Usually there is always a dark beer available here and Chris pointed out that he put on Sharps Spring Mild the previous evening. He did not think it tasted right and withdrew it from sale, he still allowed us a taster. Having tasted, I am very glad he made that decision as I probably would have ordered it. It was a bit of a shame that two 5.2% beers ended up on at the same time out of the possible three. The Everards Original did however finish whilst we were there and was replaced by 4.2% Tiger. All the beer tasted was in great condition and a reasonable 2.50 a pint.

Agree with the clique comment. Looked very promising with several real ales avbailable. Stood at the bar waiting to get served for over 15 mins., even when nobody else was waiting. Got fed up in the end and used the Theo's instead. Now pondering how to use my invisibility.

A friendly traditional pub in Grays. Friendly welcoming landlord looked after us during our stay. Four hand pumped ales were available Crouch Vale Brewers Gold, Crouch Best, Anchor St Porter & Sharp's Doom Bar. I understand that the Brewers Gold and Doom bar are regulars. An ever changing dark beer is always available here. Many Doom Bar and own branded White Hart glasses. Quite an emphasis on sport in this pub with the two TV's in the main bar showing a Setanta Scottish Premier League game. The TV in the back room was showing the League Two play off game. There is even another TV above the door to the rear which I guess they use in better weather. A pool table was also available towards the rear of the pub. Reasonably priced ale at 2.40 a pint.

Nice pub in the traditional manner, better than most in this area

Big old pub now surrounded by 60's tower blocks and flats. Impressive real ale policy in what I imagine is a difficult area, but certainly the pub is thriving. Busy both lunchtime and evening with rugby on earlier and then football later. Comfortable main bar and a more spartan bar/vault adjacent with another TV and pool table. Function room to the rear.

Crouch Vale Brewers Gold (excellent), Crouch Best, Dark Star Porter and Sharps Special on the four handpumps. Belgian beers also available.

A big pub a short walk from Grays railway station, and just across the road from The Theobalds Arms. Very well-kept ales, live football, good atmosphere. There were a beer festival when I visited, complete with barbeque in the garden. Recommended.

Been in here twice in the last 3 weeks. It had been closed for several months until it was taken on by the guy who used to run the bar in Grays Athletic Football Club. He knows how to look after Real Ale. The 'Brewers Gold' is excellent and he keeps an eye on what's going on in the pub. Before he took on this place, the Theobalds next door had exclusivity on good real ale in this part of town. The White Hart will now give The Theobalds a run for its money.

nice pub "pub" with a nice selection of ales, i had brewers gold and it was in very good condition. the staff was very friendly and i would definately go again, only rolls on sale so you foodies would be better off with fish and chips at the top of the road after a pint or two
