Stopped by again today for a quick lunch (they don't insist you have a Sunday Carvery, but can have a sandwich). This is still a lovely, very friendly place to stop, just off the A303. The "guest beer" was "New Year" and very welcome it was. Even though it was crowded, they still manage to be friendly, efficient, and careful. (The Bacon Butty, by the way, is excellent.) I'll now give it 7.5/10

4 beers on yesterday when we visited - Sharps Doombar, West Berks Good Old Boy, Brakspear Bitter and Flack Manor Double Drop. The latter was is fine condition and pretty reasonable at £3.20 a pint. Good service and friendly staff.

This pub continues to go from strength to strength. The miserable the Scottish owner has decided to leave the pub in the very capable hands of his manager (his name is Russell), best move he could have made. As long as he stays away this place will do extremely well! Tried the Porter by ABC Brewery, spot on, then had a Doom Bar, spot on again!! I hear the food is fantastic. Well done Russell, just keep the owner away!! 9/10 from me.

Managed to stop in here again today, first time in quite a while. As good as ever. Locally brewed beer, together with some high quality others (don't believe the Usshers' signs on the side of the building). The food is excellent in the bar; I've never tried the (rather posh) restaurant. Still a strong 7/10

A fantastic pub, mixing the food/serious drinker custom as well as anywhere. Although very busy (Tues night) with diners, the are set aside for drinkers (and TV football) was a great pub room, and the beer (small regional, - Palmers ?) was excellent.

We eat in the pub on a fairly regualr basis, always very good the souffle is great and the scallops with mint and chilli yummy, staff are great and good range of wines at afforable prices. They also operate a reward scheme which we have taken advatage of many times

Sorry, the below comment is not The Fox, North Waltham. We do not have a Barman, only girls and we have had no one being shortchanged.
|
At the outset this is a pleasant friendly pub with a good selection of real ales.
BEWARE! A friend of mine was "short changed" by the barman, who then tried to brazen it out by insisting that "he had a system" to prevent this. Eventually, after being confronted again, when he again insisted on his "system" being right, he finally gave the correct change.

Lovely seating area outside with a great view over the Hampshire countryside.
Great selection of well kept beer.
My missus says the food is very good as well.
Great pub, must go back soon

We are quite local and visit quite regularly (though I would not say it is "our local"). The beer is always fantastic, with new ales regularly appearing. The food is very very good indeed. The bar area is small-ish but cosy, but the beer garden is large and beautiful with no traffic noise and perfect for sitting out in the summer. I could not wish for more from a pub - 10/10.

The landlord of this place knows which side his bread is buttered and the pub bar is tiny compared to the restaurant. Saying that, the food is very good and well worth a visit. Expect to get turfed out if you have an early table as they do get very busy. I would also advisenot to get in the way of the locals when they are trying to watch sport in the bar. They really don't like it....

Great Beer!! Real Ales all at 2.50. Food looks good too. Place is normally very busy. Can only indicate good things. Recommended.

An excellent pub. Beer is well kept and the food very good. There is a typicalpub bar, not recommended if you don't like dogs. The restaurant is seperate. We have been a few times and never disappointed. The annual Oyster Festival held in the car park is well worth a visit, 10 real ales, fantastic venison burgers and of course oysters.

I took my wife for lunch today for a treat. Three times the landlord or staff were rude to me about my 9 month old daughter. It is an easy way to lose a man's custom.
I ordered fish for my two year old son but the staff brought deep fried scampi without telling us. My son didn't want scampi, and scampi isn't kosher. When I checked the order staff were rude and offered no explanation, no alternative and no apology.
The wall next to us had mould on it. Our table was wiped on top but very sticky and dirty on the sides.
The only reason my wife didn't leave is because they take your money in advance. Now I know why they don't provide a way to leave tips.

I have not been in the pub for sometime now, since I now live in the US. The last time I was there was 14th January 2005. We ate here after my wedding. The food, beer and staff was all excellent.
|
More of a destination restaurant for the residents of Basingstoke than a classic country pub. However, all of the beers we tried were in near perfect condition and the food was excellent. Good value for money. Friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere. We plan on popping back for their Oyster Festival next month. (April 25)

Yesterday I had two pints..... both were the dregs at the end of a barrel. Very cloudy stuff. The fish pie dish of the day was a porridge of cheesy goo with half boiled potatoes and no discernable fish. Bill was over 17 quid.
Guess they are only used to one visit customers and rely on trade form the nearby crem!

Beer usually in top condition, excellent pint of Braodside last time I visited and at only 2.50 a pint - bargin. Have eaten in restaurant and can recommend the souffle and the venison

Go for a meal.

Top notch pub. Would recomend to anybody.

This is a pub you look forward to visiting when travelling on the dreary A303. It makes a very welcome break. I wish I could be a local.
|

Lovely old pub with a pleasant garden a short distance from the A303. Well kept real ales with one ever changing guest, plus usual lager etc. A very decent bar menu but also a restaurant menu to choose from. Ate there last night. Food was excellent. Only slight criticism; choice a bit limited for vegetarians, although what was offered was good.

Superb food. Great real beers. Friendly staff and good company. Beautiful gardens. What more could you want?
|
Beautiful surroundings. Really good deserts.
