Mole Trap, Stapleford Tawneyback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Took a party of 7 here today for sunday lunch, ranging from 80 years old down to a 10 year old, spent £85 on food and drink only to find a hair in my granddaughters food, my wife took her meal back to the bar to have it replaced, the next thing that happened was the guvnor came over, thrust a tenner at me and threw us all out telling me that we were troublemakers. I am incredulous that any of my group could be described as trouble in any way. The throwback that threw us out was a pig, rude to all of us, not explaining in any way what we had done 'wrong', just continuing to grunt 'get out, you're done'. I get the feeling that if you are not a regular here, you are not wanted. End result, a ten year old nearly in tears and the other 6 people confused. DONT GO TO THIS PUB.

Fantastic traditional pub. Had a main meal for under a tenner and left full, good beer and friendly welcome. Pitty they are not open all day as felt a bit pressured to leave

Have visited the Mole Trap many times over past few years. Always a good selection of bitters available and they are always first class; and you are invited to try before you buy. There's no music, no kids, no fruit machine, no credit cards, so it tends to fill up with lunching wrinklies. Food seems to be all home-prepared; not like the standard factory made stuff in many pubs; with most meals you get 4 or 5 fresh veg ! We have always been pleased with the food except when once or twice, part of the meal was lukewarm. Staff pleasant and friendly. Shame it's not open all day !

This pub is set in a beaufiful part of Essex countryside, pity the experience was ruind by the unfriendly discourteous bar staff.

Visited here for lunch today after a 5 mile country ramble with a friend. We were greeted by a very unfriendly elderly barman, who we assumed to be the landlord. After some confussion over table arrangements he became agresssive and abusive. I requested our money back and left. This guy had the worst customer services skills I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. A dreadful experience.

I've seen them turn people away at 2.30 on a sturday afternoon so check when there open if your making the effort to go. I think they have to many beers on for the amount they sell.

Dont believe all the hype the Mole Trap only scrapes a 5.5/10 and thats being generous. And no I dont like modern boozers just friendly, nice pubs that look clean. So thats why I came here during one of my Essex walks. Lets start with
The Good: forget the faded McMullens ashtrays or the McMullens signage above that brewery was here back in the 1980s but instead I enjoy a lovely pint of Fullers London Pride a perfect way to survey the surrounding green fields of The Mole Trap. Lovely pint. So far, so good.
The Bad: Im at the food board - since when does Ham, Egg and Chips warrant 8.95? I opt for something more substantial, a tad-under-nine- quid home-cooked meat pie, but it isnt much better than a frozen supermarket version. Although, the vegetables (broccoli, greens, swede and mash) are just right, but it really isnt worth the price Im afraid. This is a 5 meal, Id say. Im told the Theydon Oak in Epping does great food for around two quid less than the Mole Trap and maybe you get a hello or enjoy your meal or a goodbye there? I wouldnt say any of the 3 staff I came across were friendly bit like the food prices really. And finally
The Ugly: the Mole Trap is in dire need of a lick of paint and crying out for some TLC. Outside, flaking (McMullens of course) wall signs look down on a drab grey pavement with old green plastic patio seating from the 1990s (Im being generous again!) spoil what could be a good boozer. Inside, its quite dark, quaint all the same, but needing a bit of cash splashed around from the profits of the expensive pub grub they serve here. I just hope it gets rescued before its too late

Excellent pub , good choice of ales, pleasant outside seating - walked here on a Saturday from Theydon Bois only to find pub closes at 2.30 !! Fortunately Theydon Oak in Epping now open all day (only 2 mile walk from here)

Small pub in the essex countryside, make sure you phone before you go to book a meal. Average prices.

Absolutely the place to take any visiting friends from out of the country! Be sure to read the letter from a former resident posted on the wall about the history of the pub. Great selection of real ales and they are quite willing to help you choose the best for your palate. Tiny place in a beautiful setting, and limited opening hours - so be sure to check before you go.

you cant go wrong here, a proper old pub, serving great beers, really good food, friendly staff and no idiot customers.
|
Good Ales, often from microbreweries plus Fullers London Pride as a regular. Always has 3 or 4 real ales plus other drinks, inc a wide range of soft options, Food is all cooked on premises and is good old fashioned pub grub. Worth the effort in finding it !
