We arrived at this country pub to find most people leaving and suspected it was closed for the afternoon. However luckily for us, it was still open. We were the only people in the dark, moody interior. Although there were still a few people in the garden at the rear, where an open window gives access to the bar. Brakspear Bitter & Oxford Gold & Wychwood Hobgoblin were the 3 ales on offer. Addlestones was the cider. A perfectly acceptable country pub.

Visited this pub on a weekday lunchtime to meet up with some old friends. Lucky that it was a glorious spring day as I'm not sure the pub would have held all the customers! Place was packed on a Monday (must be a good sign).
Only had one pint as i was driving but Hobgoblin was very drinkable. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Thought the food was good value for money - salad stuff was really fresh and crisp.
All in all a pleasant couple of hours and will certainly return (if I can find it again).

Dads 84th Birthday so me, mum and dad went to the green man Service very good, Food very poor?. Rump steak was dry and the mushrooms looked like they came out of a lazy students dustbin. Mums Tuna was just plonked onto the plate and dads Goulash ?? well not good Shame as We have lived in Winnersh for 45 years and have always enjoyed the Green Man No axe to grind But wont be going again

When we planned a walk in the Hurst/Twyford area and researched on BITE for a lunchtime stop, the Green Man stood out. An average score of 8.6 ! This must be a pretty special pub. We looked forward with eager anticipation to our visit, expecting food like that at the Waterside Inn, beer tasting as if it was straight from the brewery and staff of the "quality" of those at the Spearmint Rhino.
And what we actually found was a very pleasant pub. For a Friday lunchtime it had quite a lot of customers. The Oxford Gold was absolutely fine and the Haddock and Chips equally so. The guy behind the bar was very friendly and even brought our drinks to the table as we recovered from our walk alongside a very muddy River Loddon.
Any negatives ? Well the area where we sat suffered from very low light levels - my eyes aren't what they were but I had great difficulty reading the menu. ( and I nearly nodded off, but that could have been the beer ) And although Brakspear's beer is fine, it ain't what it was ( not the pubs fault I know ). But as you can see, I'm being picky.
It's difficult to judge a pub at lunchtime as, whether it's good or bad, atmosphere tends to be non-existent. But we would happily return here. 8.6 ? I'll give it an 8 - maybe the evening ambience lifts it that extra notch.

really good food, good beer, great service as usual. always been my fave pub and will continue to be long into the future

I had heard that the tenants had left to pursue other interests and that Brakspear were looking for a new operator. I must admit I was concerned as this is one of my favorite pubs in Berkshire, but I needn't have worried. The new management is under the former head chef, and this establishment is continuing its great tradition of excellent food, beer, and service.
Both the Brakspear's Bitter and the Hobgoblin were in excellent form, and the food was exceptional as always. This pub manages to walk the tightrope of being a decent food pub, while maintaining a nice pub atmosphere. I shall return.

I've been here for lunch a couple of times and it's pleasant enough, but I also cycle past regularly and the one thing I would have to say is that the cooking smells as you pass indicate that you shouldn't come here if you don't like your food deep fried!

Still one of our absolute favourite places to go. Food consistently good for two solid years of visits, friendly staff, lovely setting. Deserves to succeed.

Oh, and the parking is limited and tight to the roadside, so be careful!

A classic place to take Granny on a Sunday.
Three Brakspear ales on (the two regulars plus seasonal Hooray henley, in average condition).
The garden is clearly the big selling point, it's really rather pleasent on a sunny day.
Unlike one of the reviewers below, I did spot some sprogs - so don't go if you don't like kids in pubs as the garden makes them hyperactive.
Worth a token visit if it's sunny. Would be more a little more positive if the ale quality was a slightly better. I'll try again.

Excellent country dining pub. Lovely old building, efficient service and good value quality food. Next time we will eat in the bar as the atmosphere was better than the dining room. Reasonable selection of ales - Brakspear, Hooray Henley and Hobgoblin in average condition.

We visited this pub on a Thursday lunchtime in June and sat outside in the beer garden. Service was friendly, efficient and swift despite the car park being full to overflowing and the pub itself evidently busy. There is a modest outdoor play area for kids but none were in sight. Clientele during our visit was mostly slightly more mature types spending some of their grey pounds.

Very pleasant setting adjoining farmland, friendly staff, lovely food at lunchtime. Car parking is at a premium so get there fast if you want a space off the road.

Excellent country pub, gets absolutely rammed full at weekends due to the excellent food, good beer and good service, as well as a sun-trap garden. Unusual layout inside with a small bar tucked into one corner (serving hatch to garden) and a cellar room set two steps down from the rset of the pub - presumably the former cellarage where the casks were kept.

Lovely food, nice pint, great staff and very pleasant surroundings. Everything you would wish to find in a country pub.

Consider this to be our local, despite a mile or so walk from Twyford. Easily the best pub near Twyford. Good range of beers (Brakespears and Hoegaarden) and wines, a very good regular menu and always a lot of specials to choose from. Excellent pub/restaurant. Good both indoors and out.
