Very sadly the Crown is up for sale and not currently open. What a great shame as it was one of the best pubs in the area
|
Thankfully the Crown is now under new ownership and what an improvement!
If you are looking for that rare thing, a proper English Country pub in the English countryside serving real ale, locally sourced and freshly prepared food then give The Crown at Axford a try.
There is a proper bar on one side and a more foodie focussed bar and lounge area on the other. I had a good quality Black Sheep last week, draft Guinness is promised, the locals are friendly, dogs are welcome, great beer garden and not to be missed if the best rural view in the area out of the bar window....

Went in last Monday and the Fosters was warm.

Could be a great pub but the food is far too pricey. Beers not bad

Went to the Crown at Axford for lunch today... OMG it was fcuking Crap!! The spicey chicken wasn't even seasoned, let alone spicey.. the deep fried Brie was cold and hard in the middle, so hardly deep fried.. The roast beef was like old rope and was quite tasteless, the potatoes were hard and under cooked and the veg, well that had been shown some boiling water, but was extremely under cooked. We were asked if everything was ok, we told the waitress what we though and she plainly said, OK ... walked to the kitchen and said (we were sat right by the kitchen door) The meat was very chewy, to which the reply was .. OK
Would avoid eating there roast dinners
However the German beer was nice !

Just heard it has changed hads, so, inspite of my last comment I did go back and yeah its better. The new manager is very friendly and the food looks great. I am led to understand that he is a qulified chef. All in all a great improvement since my last visit. Recommended...good things could happen here!!!

Average pub with above average prices. The place is clean and tidy but the manager appears to be more interested in the contents of his till rather than his customers. Not really worth the bother, I certainly will not be going back.

Been here a few times now - never very busy - a friendly welcome each time. Had Alton pride and moondance on - both excellent (moondance just finshed and replaced with London pride) Had food her on Sat Lunch time - all very good - veggie options very tasty indeed - much better than the usual nuked lasange that gets served round here. Food was not cheap but you could tell were the extra money went - puddings were good too

Haven't been in for a while but it's good to see the pub busy. Food was excellent, I had the Chicken and Mushroom pie and the wife had a Fritata. Bloomin delicious. Beer was Alton's Pride, great pint.

This pub may have had a coat of paint, But nothing can hide the cracks in the place! I find it amazing that new management can go in an still the place is empty, and unwelcoming (and this on Easter bank holiday weekend!)
But hey you can get fish and chips to take away now! This should start alarm bells ringing, is it a pub or a chippie?
There are better pubs one just 1.8 miles away!

I hadn't been to the Crown for a while but heard it had changed hands so went up for dinner. The place has been re-decorated nicely and it's got a warmer feel to it now. Log fires were keeping the place warm!
I had the steak pie and the missus had the fish dish. I must say they were both excellent. The beers they had on were from fff, Moondance and another brew which I don't remember. No London Pride though which was a shame but all in all, great food and a really nice ambiance. We'll be back!

I see the Crown is under new management. We went in for dinner the other night and were pleasantly suprised, the whole place has been redecorated, log fires were lit and it feels very cosy now. The new manager and his wife were very welcoming and the food was very good. Well done the Crown, we'll be back!

I visited this pub with friends last night. The setting is beautiful and the food was great but the pub is sorely let down by the service as the staff behind the bar seemed almost incompetent. All the serving staff seemed to be under 20, even the one who was apparently the manager. They were more interested in chatting to their friends and drinking than serving the customers.
I was particulary shocked to see the manager drinking what looked like a pint of beer behind the bar. Then when one of our party went to the bar to ask for the bill (we had been waiting for some time for anyone to ask if we wanted coffees!) he asked what he drink the manager was making. He was told by the manager that one of his friends thought it would be a good idea to design a new cocktail called 'Period Pains'!
Not exactly what I expect from a country pub!

We had dinner here one evening, we arrived at 7:30 and did not get our main course until after 9! A lot of the menu was off. The lamb shank was dry and over cooked, the mash was just sludge, the pie was falling to pieces and this was not cheap. When I asked to see the manager, a 12 year old appeared, and even he admitted that the food was awful.

nice little pub, visited Saturday night, seemed quiet other than a private party. Pride, Pressed Rat and Youngs pump clips on but only Youngs available. 3.90 for a small house red!
|
The wife and I visited this pub on Saturday lunchtime and were suprised that we were the only ones there. However, the food, beer and service were all first class, so we will be back. Lets just hope its a bit more lively next time.

See the health inspectors found it though!

Visited twice recently - superb experiences both times. The food is excellent - home cooked, good menu, staff are very friendly and relaxed. London Pride and Youngs available and both very well kept.
The sort of pub that you dream about but very rarely find.

This is a belated review from a late spring visit in 2006. A Lovely Pub off the beaten track a little drive away from Basingstoke. My Wife and I both had lovely meals and the staff were very friendly in what was nice homely surroundings. The meals were not over expensive for the Quality we recieved and we shall definitely be returning.

A brilliant pub with a great garden for the summer. Log fires in the winter. They have some excellent real ales sourced from local breweries and the food is awesome. My local!!!
