I was advised by the locals that the Sandpiper was the best pub for food and handy that it serves all day. Upon arrival I noticed it was Greene King run - oh well.
Inside it was quite roomy filled mainly with family's or groups of single mums. It was busy but not noisy. TV screens were dotted about but not obtrusive.
Apart from GK IPA and Abbot a decent couple of guest beers were available; Hop Back Crop Circle and Downton Honey Blonde. Food choice was plentiful and all staff were very pleasant. Maybe not a drinkers pub but ok for a bite to eat.

Yes this might not be the most exciting pub in the world, or Dorset for that matter, but it does the job fairly well and is absolutely brilliant for sport on the box. There's about 10 tvs in the main bar area, usually switched on to 3 or more channels (Footy dominates though) and if you don't like that sort of thing there is the quieter restaurant area through the partition. Ok

I popped in last night after a stroll on the quay. I hadn't visited for two years. Gone were the scary tattooed types and instead, there was a nice 'family and couple' sort of clientele. The Pub was clean and well cared for - I felt safe. I noticed that a high rating of 5 had been achieved for hygiene. The food looked good. Well done.

A pub of two halves... to steal the old sporting cliche. The Sandpiper is a good value Greene King pub with friendly staff that's seen a real turnaround under the new managers. There seem to be more evening events (quiz night, rock'n'roll bingo) than previously. The sports bar is usually lively on match days, but luckily it's separated from the restaurant area. Meals are good value (whenever I have visited food's been available from 12 noon - 9 pm as advertised) and it's a short stroll to or from the seafront if you need to walk off your lunch.

We still visit this pub, although after the recent refubishment, the meal deal has gone up to two for 9. Still good value for money, though. Still two real ales, but the new gaffer seems a bit matter-of-fact. Polite, but not especially friendly. We will keep going, though.

hi one and all i currently do the doors on at the sandpiper when they show the rugby and international football no need to be alarmed its due to licencing laws they have to comply with... now as for my review on the place i find it a very pleasant place to work and the people there are friendly unfortunatly i havent had time to taste the food but it smells fantastic, the staff are friendly and the atmoshpere is full of good banter and polite customers i would recommend a drink or two there to any1 ok maybe not the wine if what bee578 says is true off the top of my head i cant remember the prices there but i know its not expensive... again fantastic place to go and its even better now they have had there refurbishment done...

I have read the recent reviews, but I still rate it well (my last review 2005). There has been another change of management in the last year, and as far as I can see, food is available at the published times on the outside boards (basically lunchtimes and evening from 5pm). The pub is fairly empty except when there is a big match on TV, but the staff are friendly. Food is good pub grub, and two meals for 8 is outstanding value. Two Green King real ales are available. We go there regularly.

Big Greene King pub similar to Hungy Horse but smaller menue. GK ales on pump. The Speckled Hen was fine.Dont bother ordering wine . The Santa Catalina Merlot is 5.99 at every GK pub I have visited. Why should The Sand piper ask 13.99 for the same cheap plonk. They lost that sale. The pub was packed for the Lions/SA match but almost everyone left when the game ended. It felt quite lonely sat on our own so we moved on .

in a word, 'don't' - wander round to the Haven, the Nelson, Ship in Distress - anywhere that values its customers. Agree with last post - food is when it suits, and don't assume because you've been served they won't try to hassle you to finish.

As a local to the Sandpiper I go there from time to time to eat. However, over the past two years or so, I have been really annoyed to find that they just stop serving food whenever they feel like doing so. This has happened about 8 times now. Tonight I phoned at 6.30 to what time they finish serving food. 7.30 I was told. Arrived at 7.03 only to be told the kitchen was closed despite the fact that the senior barmaid was aware of my phone call. The manager has a very cavalier attitude to when he wants to serve or stop serving food. they publish no times of food hours. Most annoying and several friends of mine no longer go there because of that reason. The pub is nice but the "customer care" is appalling.

The music here is far too loud in the late evening, are they trying to turn it into a club?
Lots of pool tables, good value meals which usually have fairly big portions. Not a bad pub.

Good resonable pint! Sports bar is good if you want it for footy or rugby etc. Pool tables aren't cheap but plenty of them. Good atmosphere, pleasant staff. We approve!!! Guinness is good!

It's pretty quiet during the week, especially outside of holiday times. Green King IPA is the only real ale. Food is basic pub grub, but tasty and good value for money (two meals for 8 in mid-week). Separate "sports" bar keeps the noise away from the diners. Recommended for a "cheap and cheerful" pint and bite.

This place goes off on a Sunday night! A pub quiz and music to boot... some people even turn up in a Ghostbusters car(?)
