A very muddy 8 mile walk around Hook led us to the C&H for lunch.
And a pleasant experience it was too. A fairly traditional pub with wooden floors, rustic traditional furnishings and lots of wood to sit on and eat off of. It's Hall & Woodhouse, so Badger First Gold and Fursty Ferret was the available choice. We tried both and they were fine.
A good range of food - we tried Ham, Egg and Chips, Fish and Lasagne and they all came up to scratch. A log fire was available but after slogging over soggy fields we needed cooling down, not heating up.
Barman was very friendly. Pub not hugely busy, only half a dozen apart from us.
All in all, well worth a visit.

A pleasantly situated country pub serving Hall & Woodhouse beers ,two small bar areas with additional seating dotted around the front half of the pub,the rear half is set out for dining. Outside seating at the front of the pub and a beer garden at the rear overlooking the Hampshire countryside, however tried a pint of Hopping Hare which proved to be rather flat and lifeless after ten minutes of pouring, so turned to the other offering Badger Best I think, Cant exactly recall as it was even more uninspiring than the first. It dosnt matter how good a pub may look ,if the beers not up to it , its a waste of time. wont go out of my way to revisit.

Visited with the family for a lunch yesterday (a Saturday)for the first time in many years. Beer was excellent, well kept and served. Food a real disappointment. After looking at the menu online we arrived to find a much reduced lunch time menu. My lasagne was clearly a warmed up plate from a previous evening with hard dry edges all round and one of the burgers was pretty much cremated. Salad a handful of bag leaves with a bit of tomato and a couple of slices of cucumber. Plentiful chip but standard and frozen. Prices reasonable for this area and would have been good for the local produce and home cooked food advertised. Such a shame as this is a lovely traditional English pub and could be so much better. Wood burning stoves were not lit so I kept my coat on.

We had our works office meal at this superb restaurant on Saturday 18.12.11. I cannot rate the service, hospitality and friendliness of the staff highly enough. The meal was beautifully cooked, hot throughout and served with a smile! We had the whole back room to ourselves, which was decorated in a lovely, traditional way and was so cosy with the lit fire and candlelights along the windowsills. If you are thinking of having your Christmas meal here, best book soon as we are going back next year! Thanks to Ian and all his lovely staff for a fantastic evening!

NIce pub- in November on a cold day there was a log fire at lunchtime- cosy! Very friendly. Beer OK. Bar snack fine esp. chips. Musroom omlette was rubbery and mushrooms not freshly cooked so take care selecting meals. Worth another try.

A wonderful pub with a superb beer garden. The new landord only took over a few months ago, but has already done a good job in building up the trade. Excellent bar snacks available at lunch. When we last went, Will the barman was 'holding the fort'' and doing excellent work! Beer good, food good, garden good. A very friendly pub all round.

This pub is quickly becoming a Hampshire favourite! Finally got the time to pop in and try the food. All I can say is superb. An excellent meal (cooked to perfection) and my partner's lasagne looked equally sumptious. Worth visiting for the tranquil view over the fields from the garden alone...
(And the pork scratchings of course)

Had another lovely session in the little garden after a brisk walk. Food is fresh, local and hot, and although not 'gourmet', it filled an empty tummy. The beer was good as usual and the welcome was warm and friendly. There's a house for sale 4 doors down-now there's a thought...........

Went tonight for the first time since it changed hands. The landlord and lady were very welcoming and the food was reasonably priced, home cooked and delicious. Sat in the garden with lovely views over the fields, listening to the bell ringers practice in the church opposite and it was very nearly perfect. Oh and the beers good too!!!
|
What a great little pub. Just took the sports car out for a ride and stopped off here to refresh. Will definitely be coming back to try the food. Great staff, great location and the ale was spot on.
|
A brief saturday afternoon visit shows the pub seems to be back on track with a charming and welcoming landlord taking time to get to know us and provide excellent service. Beer was first class (good range of Badger ales) and pork scratchings were exemplary. We look forward to returning soon and trying the pub grub. Nice to have an alternative to the Frog & Wicket on the street.

8 landlords in 5 years each left with debt you'd have thought they would have realised by now 2 pubs in a small village is 1 to many!
|
Pub was closed Wednesday lunchtime. Chairs on tables and no sign on the door suggests something more permanent.
|
Small place but the beer was ok. Do not eat here the food is so bad I complained about it and I do not normally complain just do not go back. The whole area round Hook is full of scruffy pubs with high prices and low standards.
|
Out walking with friends on a lovely spring day, this old coaching inn is an adequate watering hole with at least three Badger ales on tap. Id also go with the fish and chips which were excellent.
|
What a great little country pub, very warm welcome from the Landlord. Nice pub menu with well kept real ale. My advice have a pint and the Fish & Chips, what a way to spend a friday night! Will be back.
|
Beer fine, as you'd expect, but seriously don't bother with the food. Over priced & vile, just like a certain member of staff there too!!! Perhaps i visited on an off day but generally looking at all the reviews here regarding food i am not so sure.
|
Drove out here for a couple of pints and was impressed old fashionend looking Pub two bars plenty of Wood panneling and Paisley carpet good sized open fire that was always being stoked up. Lemony Cricket and Tanglefoot were on offer both good pints and served in the proper glasses. A plus point if you needed to have a wash while you were there they sell Imperial Leather soap in cabinet opposite the bar !
|
Went there on a Sunday lunchtime. Beer and excellent but food only OK as the blue cheese sauce with the steak was in fact gravy with blue cheese in it and the mash with the pork belly appeared to have been microwaved as it was ferociously hot and by the time it was edible the pork was quite cool
|
Have known this pub for several years now and always been impressed with the well kept Hall & Woodhouse beers, Lemony Cricket at its best this weekend as was the bbq and blues festival. Really like the efforts Chris & Kelly are making to support local producers with most of their new menu coming from within the Hampshire area. Next event in September (Gourmet night for 35) looks promising. Will keep my business for sure!

Beer is good and love Kerry, she is the best barmaid ever !!
The back garden is lovely on a summers day, for a nice pint =)
I have a suggestion, perhaps reduce the price of the food a little, and offer a selection of baguettes at all times when food is being served.
|
This is a nice cosy traditional pub. I would recommend going for a drink here, but not eating.
We discovered it as the pub is taking part in The Times Gastro Pub 241 deal. However this is a long way off from being a gastro pub. If you are after bog standard pub grub it is okish, but it's not great quality.

I would like assure BillJ that I am firmly attached to 'planet earth' and have been described on many occasions as the original 'grumpy old man' will to citicise anything and everything. However, I am a firm believer in giving praise where it is due and it is due here. We visited again during the late summer and my original thoughts were underlined. THIS IS A GOOD PUB.
I do not find it strange that 'bsmarter' posted his review at 10.22 in the morning, perhaps he went the previous evening.
To answer evnsmarter's implied charge I have no connection with The Coach & Horses whatsoever, I just enjoy good beer and good food in a good pub.
|
What i find even stranger is the fact that bsmarter had just enjoyed a 2 course meal by 10.22am this morning???
Why would someone feel the need to immediately jump on the defensive as has happened a couple of times when a bad review is made unless it's shameless self promotion?
|
I can't imagine what prompted the strange attack by billj on Supercom's comments but it's possible that some people just don't appreciate freshly cooked seasonal local food which can take a little longer than the frozen microwaved offerings of the large chain pubs. I have just enjoyed a delicious meal of crayfish and smoked salmon starter followed by fillet of venison, all locally sourced and served by a very cheerful young lady. The beer's good as well..
|
Supercom - Have you ever visited the planet earth?
The pub's food is crap with poor service.
|
Had a couple of nice light lunches here during the winter months and liked it, nice older-style atmosphere without being the yellow-walled style. The "back-yard" is grim. I hope they do something about that cause in the summer months I don't think I'll be visiting.
|
My wife & I have been here twice now with different sets of friends. What a pleasure it has been. On both occasions, one for Sunday Lunch and the other for Saturday dinner, we have arrived slightly disheveled after walking around the surrounding countryside. On both occasions we have been greeted warmly and fed and watered magnificently not to mention cost effectively. This is a real English Pub with serving good English food at fair prices and deserves to prosper. Flashy it is not, traditional it is.
|
Six of us had lunch there today. The food is slow and not very good. I had a lamb pie, pastry looked and tasted like a thin piece of leather. Chips looked nice and golden but were soggy. You need two hours to eat lunch here as the food comes through very slowly.
Beer was super though.

Good pint of Badgers and a nicely cooked steak - quiet but comfortable. Only a small gripe - cheap mustard for the steak (not Colmans) - always a mistake!
|
New young proprietors Chris, Kelly and Matt are turning this village pub round. In this character building, they have a commitment to friendly service, good beers, freshly cooked locally sourced food and occasional singer/songwriter musical evenings. Well worth several visits!
|
I have to admit to being a long time local at the Coach & Horses and although the pub has had a rough couple of years since Roger and Pat left, it now has new tenants, a very friendly and enthusiastic young couple Chris and Kelly who have, with Chris's brother Matt the Chef, introduced a new menu with a constantly changing choice of local sourced food ( Rabbit and Partridge this week). If you like good food and Hall & Woodhouse real ales in a genuine old fashioned country pub with a warm welcome, then give it a try. You won't be disappointed
|
Potential disaster. Visited recently to hear that the landlord is on the move and they are expecting a stand-in manager. Doesn't sound like the brewery have a lot of interest in the place; let's hope they leave it alone in that case. I always fear an enthusiastic 'refurbishment' which will destroy this wonderful place.
|
Went to the Coach and Horses for the first time 2 nights ago. I had a couple of pints of excellent Badger ale, they also had Stinger and Tanglefoot on. There are a couple of rooms at the front as well as the main bar area which makes it feel cozy. The resteraunt area out the back was empty the night I went, and there were a few folk in the simple beer garden out back.
We had dinner and it was basic but tasty pub grub. Not a huge menu, took a little while but was OK. The staff were very friendly and relaxed.
If you are in Rotherwick and want a nice meal, go to The Falcon, but if you want a couple of pints in a friendly pub the C&H fits the bill.
|
A really special country pub with small, cosy rooms, real fires in the winter. Some home cooked, traditional dishes looked good although not tried. Great selection of beers and last time I was in there my pint was replaced (half way supped) by the landlord who thought it looked a little bit cloudy! Wonderful. Small garden out back but with stunning views across fields (not the rubbish bins which seems usual in pub gardens). Find it & go there.

Nice country pub with a warm welcome. Both lagers Stella & HB were in great condition and the food we had - steak sandwich on baguette with chips - was good and good value too. Not too busy on the Sunday lunchtime we visited, though the bar was a bit smoky.
|
Had a snack and a very good pint in the Coach and Horses last weekend lunchtime. A lovely open fire, friendly service (eventhough they were busy) and a warm atmosphere.

What has happene to this boozer????? between 1990 and 2004 it was a great pub, loads of beers, kept really well. Went their last month, 3 non-descript ales, badly kept, very disappointing. Looks like the previous may of been a tad overconfident, it was also completely empty, something I've never seen before and a sure sign of its fall from grace!
|
Excellent pub with great atmosphere and food. New managers (brothers) taking over soon. Have met them a couple of times and think they will do a splendid job! Traditional pub that will stay that way undoubtedly.

Nice pub, the food can be hit & miss. When it's good is great, when it's bad...
Usually has 2 guest beers on the go.

This wonderful traditional country pub with real fires, old beams and little nooks, is stuffed full of character. Arguably one of the finest ale houses in the area with many guest beers always available. Great food at reasonable prices. Ideal for a night out with the lads with your beer hat on, or for taking your prospective in-laws out for a quiet meal. Good sized car park, which is just as well as this place is pretty much inaccesible unless you drive there. Probably at its best during those long winter evenings when you can tuck up in front of a roaring log fire. Visit this place as soon as you can or you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life!
