This pub has a vast array of beers. There must be at least 12 ales and various other keg beers as well. Seems to have an Irish influence to it as well. The Funky Monkey and Night train beers me and my mate had were in good condition when we went in (although we didn't rate Night Train as a beer but Funky Monkey was a nice pint) and I would certainly consider going back. It is a tad pricey but with the amount of ales they serve it's what you are expecting really. If you want to try a pub over the River then come to this one.

Paid a return visit back in August. Was quieter this time so managed to get a better seat and a better look at the ales on offer. 11 pumps were on and a further 6 were off. Plenty to choose from!
Went for a Barney's Stout which was very enjoyable.
Would definitely go again.

Cracking local pub, worthy of its numerous CAMRA awards. Wednesday night, 12 pumps on mainly smaller breweries . Mobberley Hedge Hopper very nice, well kept as every pint that I saw being served was. In a triangle of pubs that make this area of Salford a real oasis.
Decided to pay a visit here on Saturday night. More real ale in here than you can shake a stick at! The place was pretty busy for the time of night, not sure if it is always busy or whether the fact they were showing the rugby helped. Evidence that some of the clientele were regulars judging by their metal tankards.
I went for a pint of Squonk by Sadlers, a pale and very pleasant tasting ale. Was very tempted to stay for a second (different) ale but we had a few pubs to tick off the list that night so decided to move on after one. Would definitely be willing to go back.
The best pub in Salford bar none. Great selection of real ales and cider nice and clean and with knowledgeable staff who have pride in the beer.
went in last night for the Uruguary match. Quite dissapointed with my ales. Only 1 out of 3 was in condition. I hope this was a one-off as I have been in many times before and the quality is usually superb
what a cracking pub, with the imminent re-furbishment of chapel street this place is ideally located...great beer, great juke-box,really-really nice knowledgable staff and a genuine friendly atmosphere (also there are a few other great pubs in walking-staggering distance!)

Great selection of ales all admirably managed and served by one barmaid - they know their stuff here - two 4Ts ales available plus countless others - nice 80's music, XTC, Ultravox, etc...
Cannot argue with any of the previous posts, this bar is outstanding. Very friendly staff and a great selection of real ales, by far the best choice in this part of the world. I sampled a couple and they was faultless with some ales ive never seen before.
Good value, high quality pub.

Was brought here by a friend who used it as his local, sadly he has now moved. Met the lovely Jean behind the bar and had a great chat about our favourite Belgian beers and she introduced me to some ones I had never tried but will be having again. Also took part in the quiz and came last, quality night out.

a world class pub for the real ale lover
Was this here 20 years ago? If it was it must have been different. I went into Manchester with my Mum the other day and she pointed this place out to me so we called in for a quick one. What a gem! several ales I didn't know plus aome I do. No problem having tasters, and the only beer available amongst the plethora of keg's that most people would know was Guinness. Unfortunately I don't come home as often as I should, but I will be using this place in future. Good friendly, knowledgable barstaff too!
The best pub in Salford.
It's part of a nice little crawl down Chapel St. I just hope when they regenerate they add a few more decent boozers and not all wine bars and clubs
Light, airy and modern pub situated on a renovated square. This place had a very good selection of real ales and ciders and is ideally situated to combine with the Crescent just down the road. On my Sunday evening visit they had Empire Snow Joke, Salamander Transporter, Northumberland Firkin Freezing & Legends of the Tyne Craig Bellamy, Fugelstou Just Jane, Bazens Light Relief, Lymestone Ein Stein, Great Heck Auld Lang Syne & Leeds New Moon. Ciders were Thatchers Heritage & Cheddar Valley and Gwynt y Ddraig Haymaker. I'm sure I'll be back here at some time.
Its excellent that this pub has had some recognition on this website by getting into the top 10 list. Highly recommended!!!!
A friendly pub with at least 12 well kept cask ales - mainly from smaller breweries - plus a seemingly good selection of continental lagers.
Don't be put off by the location, it's only a short walk from Manchester city centre and 5 mins from Salford Central station. Very much worth the walk; an excellent pub!

Was in here yesterday on one of my occasional visits. Normally a good selection of beers on and had a decent stout and an even tastier porter. Friendly enough and indeed very clean and tidy. Only problem with this pub is that it looks like you've walked into somebody's lounge!
Still worth a visit if you're in that part of town.
This pub is fantastic for belgium and euro beers. You cant help but get bladdered in here because the majority of their beer is 5%+! BE WARNED THOUGH TO REMORTGAGE YOUR HOUSE BEFORE ENTERING!!
First visit to this pub will definitely not be the last.
I have never seen so many beers/ales on offer!
It's a lovely clean pub. Service was good.
The New Oxford is like the bigger, more mature brother of the Black Lion. If you like the Black Lion then you will love this place - draft ciders, pumps and pumps of real ale, hundreds of Belgian beers... It's a real friendly, community-spirit driven pub. Alternatively, if you don't like the Black Lion then give this place a go. It's hard not to love!
This pub is a must when I come to Manchester, and there was a festival on while we were here. Plenty of ales to chose from so we settled down with a superb meal, and enjoyed Bird Brain Velvet Scoter, Glentworth Lucky Strike, Great Heck Cuthberts Rest, and Great Newsome Holderness XB. Really meant to get back for another visit but there were just too many good fests around this time. Didn't make it to the Black Lion this time, but will certainly be back.
In reply to ersk1690:
Tim and Paulette bought the lease on the Black Lion long after Enterprise had boarded the place up. Additionally, they had nothing whatsoever to do with anything that led to that unhappy state of affairs.
Secondly, being a regular in both pubs, I'm pleased to reassure you that both are full of real Salford people, which is in part what makes both pubs as great as they are.
A return visit on Saturday just gone. Found to have the same excellant range of beers on offer. Not as busy as previous visit though the filthy weather was the probable cause of that. The beers tried were in good order - the house beer from Phoenix went down a treat & the Allgates Napoleon's Retreat was a superb beer. The landlord seemed to be to-ing & fro-ing between this place and the Black Lion down the road.
i see the landlord is moving to the black lion after some under hand dealings to get the old landlord out and the pub closed will this be another salford pub where salford people are not welcome
Certainly the best pub we've found in Salford, and right up there amongst the best in Manchester, the New Oxford is a pub which any real ale lover will want to visit.
I've never found less than 6 real ales on, sometimes 12 or even more during beer festivals, and this is a pub which keeps them consistently well. There are several Belgian beers always on too, for those who prefer this.
Internally, it's recently been renovated and looks almost like a swish continental bar, with leather style seats and light wood all around. There's a jukebox (but not intrusively loud) whilst the large screen TV is thankfully only on in the back-room mostly, giving some refuge for those who don't like sport. There's seating outside too for smokers, in the little courtyard area it opens onto. I have always found staff and customers friendly, and it does get quite busy at times. It's always open on a Sunday too, when others may have closed on you.
I can understand that Salford 'born & bred' types may not like such a new take on an old boozer, and whilst I respect that view, there are plenty other unmodernised boozers in Salford if that's what you prefer. But the New Oxford has achieved what it set out to do beautifully well, and with this place just a 15 minute stroll from town (or even a free trip via 'purple' MetroShuttle bus Mon Sat) I have to say that is a pub I never miss on a trip to Manchester.

Another great visit to this popular real ale pub in April and did not disappoint. Plenty of new ales for me to chose from. Managed 4 before moving on. There are 2 rooms here, and about 15 ales from micros to chose from. A must for any real ale enthusiast.
Wow, what a find. Vast selection of ale (13 handpumps in use) and even more of a vast foreign beer selection (15 pumps) and a large bottle menu as well!! Tried several of the ales from micro breweries near and far - all superd. The Oxford is the type of place you could spend alot of time in.... Friendly staff. Will return for sure
A sign on the wall outside says 'continental style bar' whatever that means. It's certainly not very pubby inside. A large island bar surrounded by an open area, at the point where I was served I could see five handpumps and five foreign beers on draught. I believe there were more pumps on another side. I had a pint of New Oxford which was fine. We sat outside on the square which was a pleasant spot. Will probably pay another visit sometime.
Committed ale pub with a modern ambience, which rose from the ashes of the old Oxford. It is located in a pleasant square just off Chapel Street, Salford's main thoroughfare. It is 10 minutes walk from Manchester city centre and 5 from Salford Central railway station. Handy for combining a visit with the nearby Crescent and King's Arms also. The decor is very modern- leather sofas, polished floors, etc, and as such it isn't a must visit for he traditional pub enthusiast. However, the range of beers from local breweries and also European lagers is outstanding, and it is well worth a trip in this respect. Always busy due to its quality, and in summer it's nice to sit outside on the square. Recommended.
Amazing selection of beers. 15 Real ales from micro's - many that new that they're not even listed in the GBG. Large selection of Belgian and other European beers, many also on draught. Friendly efficient staff ensure fast service even when pub full.
Cannot fault the beer here. Called in a couple of times while visiting for the various fesrtivals and had a superb choice of ales in great comndition. Friendly atmosphere among the varied clientele, not just beer tickers, and staff well informed and friendly too. Agree it can't be missed when visiting Manchester.
Definitely looks like a cafe bar inside but feels like a traditional publ Room at the back contains a massive TV screen with table seating whilst the front room has seats round the walls and a couple of high tables. Fantastic range of real ales, it's a beer festival every day in here. Does food at lunchtime through to late afternoon/early evening (at least it did on the Saturday we were in). A must visit for the tickers as the beer range changes so quickly. Plenty of other characters in here as well though. We call in every time we're in Salford.
Tremendous selection of ales on tap. All the ones we tried were well kept. The pub is very clean and well run. It does have a cafe feel to the which seems to attract more than just tickers and boozers.
One of the best real-ale pubs in Manchester. Also, if you get the chance, try it out during their Belgian beer festival, where they'll have up to 40 Belgian beers on draft. Well worth a try!
Great new pub. Unrivalled choice of beer for miles. Only downside is the slight 'new' feel of the place, although that may be to other's tastes!
This gaff pulls off the really difficult task of appealing to a diverse crowd whilst simultaneously making everyone feel at home. Locals, CAMRA tickers, students, business types all rub shoulders here enjoying the well-kept beers. Friendly staff, good jukebox, it's difficult to fault the Oxford.
Great range - and a varying one - of well-kept ales. Unusual range of Belgian beers on tap and bottled. Manages to combine being a friendly local with a sense of sophisticated city pub. Accordingly, a wide spectrum of customer types and ages. Pity no food in evenings.
I can only echo other writers here -its a real success story since it opened a couple of years ago. Its won several awards and its not hard to see why! Well worth combining this one with the Crescent up the road.
What a great place. Another recommendation that came up trumps. Great choice of well kept beer served by an extremely knowledgable and friendly landlady. Managed to get there more than once during our holiday, and will call again any time I am in the area.
An outstanding pub which gets it just about right on every level. Superb choice of beers, great food, pleasant decor anf friendly staff. After only my second visit, I feel like a time honoured regular customer. If only the pubs in my home town (Horwich) came up to this standard I would be very happy.
Excellent pub. Always got a big selection of well kept real ales on. Nice, clean pub with friendly staff and regulars. Well worth the short walk from Manchester city centre.
This was my first visit to this pub and I can only say that it exceeded my already high expectations. Superb choice of beer, highly efficient and courteous bar staff. Friendly locals made for a very pleasant experience which I look forward to repeating.
This Pub Has Just been Named Manchester CAMRA pub of the year!
Cracking pub! A friendly welcome and a great choice of hand pumped ales, plus draft imported beers and a good bottled selection. Well worth a visit.
Fantasic Pub... Friendly staff very welcoming great atmostshere and good crack. Selection of Ales is brilliant specially if its your first time trying them. Would definately recommend for a night out..
allthough local to the area i was to feel unwelcome it seems to be yet another case of local people being pushed out to allow for passing trade and trends i would not recommend this pub to anyone who actually lies in salford
Excellent beer house, more in the N/4 than the Salford style. Quieter than the Crescent though.
Very friendly pub. 10 hand pulled cask ales all in superb condition. World beer menu. Nice food. Watch out for this pub as it's becoming a real cracker.
Modernised pub but thankfully retaining some original features. Work is still ongoing but it is becoming an established favourite on the real ale circuit to rival the nearby Crescent and Kings Arms. At the time of my visit, their winter ale festival sported ten beers including some that the National Winter Ales Festival not far away hadnt thought of and in excellent nick. Clearly recommended.
They had their first beer festival this weekend (25/11/06) and they were shocked and pleased with the turnout, the beer was in excellent condition (as always) and there was a decent range of foreign beers too. Always a pleasure to go in as it's not a stuck up bar and you are treated like friends popping in for a pint.
friendly place and a good stop off on the way to the kings
