user reviews of the Lamb, Sandford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Lamb was our final stop of the night (the Red Lion in Shobrooke and the Rose & Crown in Sandford are not listed on here). The Lamb was a bit more upmarket than the Rose & Crown. Whilst the Rose & Crown was cheaper and felt more like a real pub with its local crowd, the Lamb had a different feel with meals and candlelit tables to create an atmosphere. The ale range was ok - Dartmoor Legend, Otter Bitter & Ale & Exeter 'Fraid Not. Parking can be difficult.

I was a little wary before going into this pub thinking it would be a stuck up pretentious sort of place.
It certainly is not at all.
Great village local with good choice of ale and cider.
Cosy inside with a small pleasant beer garden.

8/10

Great beer, great food, great ambience, lovely dogs that have the run of the pub. What is there to dislike? The only caveat is if you want to eat (and who wouldn't?) either get there early or book a table in advance

You really do NOT need to be over 50 to enjoy this pub in fact on the occasions I've visited it's had plenty of youth (I'm in my early 30s and know how to party) but it is a country pub that does food so it does help if you're a grown up.

Go here quite often and coming recently from west London (eg the Ledbury, Anglesea & Havelock) it is really nice to find high quality food in the general food desert that is devon. What is more the ambience is much friendlier and the prices are so low its a joke. If the food is not quite the standard of ledbury it is about on a par with the anglesea & comfortably as good as the havelock; a proper foodie pub. There is always a collection of good beer & wine (again, be amazed by the prices.) I like it more every time even if it is 8 miles away!
Apparently they now have rooms that are outrageously smart and twice the size of any normal 5 star establishment.

Almost perfect. Comfy, chatty, great ales and wines (ridiculously good-value bottles), local cider, local info, newspapers and magazines, cinema upstairs (no, really), sun-trap garden to watch the swifts feeding, regular talks/events, sofas, big fires, interesting art, unusual music selections, great community feel. And the food - just brilliant. Puts most so-called gastro-pubs to shame without pretension or vast expense. Modest menu of quality dishes with lots of local ingredients. Fantastic Sunday roast.
Only complaint is typical of many country pubs - it's bl**dy freezing if you're early, as they never get the fires going properly unless there's a crowd.
Others take note - this is how to do a Real Pub.

real ale available, rail ale by the beer engine
royal oak by o'hanlons and doombar by sharpes, with a whitbread best bitter tap also on,the next ale ready to go on was yellowhammer by o'hanlons.
Superb pub in the heart of the village, well worth a visit i must say,and a really fine food menu available also, with a decent specials board.

An excellent village pub with some very interesting extras!!
Excellent real ales, with a local special ale every weekend. Sumptious food locally sourced and often organically grown make up a short, interesting and varied menu.
A warm open fire and chatter from friendly customers and outstanding landlord and landlady make for a haven of contentment. Get there soon.
