Visited this pub for the first time yesterday and the immediate impressions were good. The pub was busy without being crowded, there was an atmosphere of bonhomie, and there were four handpumps, albeit three were selling Greene King ales. I had the Xmas guest ale which was well-kept, although a little strong for a lunchtime pint at 4.8%. The food, however, was a disappointment. I ordered the cheese, potato and onion pie which was supposed to come with greens. The pie should have been called a potato pie as there was little evidence of either cheese or onion; the greens consisted of a handful of frozen peas. My mate had the ox-cheek and tongue pie which sounds great. However, when he cut into it, the meat appeared to have been incinerated - probably the result of being warmed up on more than one occasion. When he mentioned this to the member of staff (landlady?), all she could say was that someone else had also mentioned this. She clearly didn't give a toss. At £9.50 apiece, these pies were very poor value for money. I won't be eating here again.

If you stick to the guest ale you can drink here, Aspall's cider is available on draught but its 4.25!!! Food is very good I hear but whenever I've been there I've struggled to find an enjoyable pint and any room to breathe.

I popped in here today for a quick drink, having not visited for years. I thought I didn't think much of Greene King, but the half of St Edmunds I had was surprisingly good.
There was a good (friendly) atmosphere. The choice of ales are a bit limited (I spotted only one guest ale), but the pub seems to be doing the right things generally. It has a comfortable feel to it, and although it's not that remarkable, it's the sort of place you might end up spending all evening in.

Good local pub with well kept Guinness. It is always warm in the winter and the small garden is lovely in the summer.

Friendly local boozer, lovely atmosphere. IPA is always well kept.

This pub has an great mix of the old charm of the building as well as a relaxed, modern clean environment. It has a pool table, but to be honest I never have had the chance to play as we're always too busy chatting to the staff and the punters at the bar. They often have mini events on with BBQs and bands, and their lunch menu looks great (although Ive not sampled it myself) All in all a cracking bar, with a great beer garden, and one I wuld heartily reccomend

first visit last night. Was surprised by the garden. I will be adding this to my list of decent pubs in Hitchin

A fab local - always a great atmosphere and always a smile from behind the bar.
The food menu always looks interesting, but I've yet to test it out - soon! The Sunday roast is meant to be great but the two times I've tried, they've run out so best to book ahead just in case!
Hardly worth mentioning in winter, but the garden round the back is great as well.
They're also excellent supporters of the local community and activities - full marks all round to Vic and co!

Fantastic pub, with a great atmosphere, great staff, and always a good night or afternoon out. Never sampled the food, but it's always looked appetising when I've seen it served. Very very friendly pub, well worth a visit.

Walked in here with pal for the first time the other night and was pleasantly surprised. Nice crowd, Nice decor (apart from the carpet which makes you giddy)and nice food, which was excellent value at 5 main meal. Seemed very busy for a Monday evening. Also overheard the young Rick Astley lookalike behind the bar refusing to serve a drunken crowd for being too drunk. How refreshing and well done.

Have been visiting this pub for years under various management and the current landlady has done wonders with the place since she took over. It now feels bright and breezy, not dark and claustrophobic how it used to be. Nice atmosphere which can verge on the "cliquey" at times and if you get the chance try it for Sunday lunch. The roast dinners are superb. One thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't do busy very well. Trying to get to the bar when it is packed is nigh on impossible due to all the regulars propping it up that refuse to budge an inch. The bar stools definitely need removing during busy periods.

I popped in there this weekend with family based on recommendations from friends and I wasn't disappointed. The real ale was very good, the atmosphere friendly and the prices reasonable too.
Recommended.

A great little pub. Probably the best in Hitchin that I have visited.
Very friendly staff and locals, a decent range of beer and the place is clean and very well kept.

While visiting the historical market town of Hitchin we stumbled into the 'TARDIS' that is the Vic. The external sliver of Chedder internally becomes a whole Dutch Edam, and when the perfectly kept range of ales were sampled we were ready for Time Travel. Just as well, for that evening the whole town had turned out in 70's garb - apparently just one of the many themed evenings this social pub holds. And Social it is. From the moment we stepped inside, Vic the Landlady welcoming us with a big smile, the regulars drew us into the inner sanctum of this lovely pub. What I wouldn't give a FOUREX for IPA

Having visited this friendly pub on several occasions I am never disappointed by the wonderfully kept ales and welcoming staff. The regulars are always willing to engage in varied and lively conversation and the recent redecoration has added to the relaxed ambience. A great place to spend an evening.

An excellent pub and one that I always make a point of visiting when I'm in Hitchin. The permanent Greene King cask ales are always served in peak condition as are the guest beers. Whilst its interesting external aspect makes it appear perhaps a little small it is deceptively spacious inside and has a host of interesting internal features and ornamentation. The pub has a good mix of friendly "regulars" and passing trade with a good split of ages and gender. The manager and staff are invariably welcoming and attentive. Whole-heartedly recommended.

Closed when I arrived at 14:57 yesterday.

Only been in a couple of times, the highlight being inadvertently there on a fancy dress night where the top 3 got prizes, which was handy as only two people were in fancy dress. Nothing wrong with the ale though.
|
Seemed abit run down, cold, unfriendly and shabby. Also abit creepy...not sure why. Shame.

This traditional pub is a gem too often unnoticed and passed by. Had an excellent pint of one of the guest ales, Tribute. Welcoming staffrecently taken over by a friendly young couple.

Quaint and oddly shaped pub, deceptivly larger inside than you would imagine. Always warm and welcoming. Never had a bad pint.
