Dreadful food. Beer is not great. Feel for the staff as its not their fault. Best avoided.

Visited on a busy Friday afternoon, one guy at the bar trying to serve drinks and take food orders. All credit to him as he wasn't getting flustered but it did mean a ten minute wait just to get served. Beer, three ales to choose from and my pint was chilled to the point of being tasteless. Food - I opted for the Homemade Beefburger described as "minced steak chargrilled and served in a soft bun with smoked cheddar, tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise,
sweetcure bacon and seasoned chips". The burger was overcooked, dry and chewy. The melted cheese was a thin layer of congealed yellow oil, and the thin strip of bacon was burned to a crisp! As for the chips, a small spoonful of dry tasteless catering pack chips that certainly weren't seasoned in any way.

A truly unrewarding experience.

Very busy now all through on a Saturday but very efficently run by Kerry and her team. Lots of staff on hand behind the bar and very little waiting. Will visit again soon, Well run establishment with a very friendly and personel touch..

got to be honest , the last time i went here it was dreadful ! Kept away since . Tried again last week as a friend wanted to go and there has been a bit of a turnaround. Good waitress service and it was full on a thursday . mind you a 25% discount may have contributed. In fairness I could not faulty the food , yes i did say that ! and my friend who is a food critic to say the least had nothing to complain about except a slightly wobbly table. Have decided to give a better rating but mind you this place has gone up and down like a yoyo ever since it opened. I am slightly relieved as it is such a nice place to go to. Oh I note now run by someone called Kerry who I worked out was a female ! Thats a good sign .. Will give it another go soon to make sure it was not another one off

Have to basically agree with other comments. No soap in the gents loos and a broken toilet seat are just lazy complacency.

Set menu for a group booking was good value for 10 and they had an interesting choice of ales - Fuller's Summer Ale & Adnams Ghost ship

I knew things were not fab here given friends comments but gave it another go. Firstly once of the main specials was all gone by 8pm, not told about this when we arrived. My guests were gutted and had to chose second best .The wine glasses served with the wine were dirty and the replacments the same . In fairness food was ok but the miserable staff just did not want to be there. The manager could be heard screaming at kitchen staff and I heard at least two crashes of dropped plates and cutlery. Oh yes, no loo roll in the toilet. This place needs to get its act together again . It is simple things that need attending to . The food takes nice and they have some great wines at decent prices. Get it sorted please!!

Went to Swallows Return a couple of weeks ago and decided to have a meal. Service from the waitress (if you can call it service) was appauling. Unable to communicate, clearly not bothered about customer service. My meat was tough, food cold and had been given a dirty spoon for desert.
We have complained and funnily enough, heard nothing back.
It is not the first time that we have had cause to complain about The Swallows Return. We even asked to see The Manager on the last occasion and he refused to come out to talk to us.
No wonder the staff have a "don't care" attitude.
We won't be going back and I've told all my friends not to bother.
Lets hope they can ride the recession - alternatively, get another Manager in there who knows how to manage the team and keep them motivated.

This was my third visit to the Swallows Return and the worse.
The food is overpriced as well as over cooked and the service at the bar is poor.
The bar staff dont acknowledge you waiting and let the customers fight it out as to who is next to be served.
My dialogue with a barman started with him calling me sir and ended with him calling me mate Im not that bothered, but choose one and stay with it. They also seem to serve with a miserable look on their face.
For the meal, they ran out of spoons and we had to eat our desserts with soup spoons and the scoop of ice cream for my son was presented in what can only be described as a large 5mm thick glass goblet. It was filthy and I sent it back.
Its a shame as the location and the building are really good. If they can get the basics right, they could do much, much better.

A group of 8 of us went last Friday. Lights above our table didn't work, but only table of size available. Crispy Lemon Chicken was bland and tastless, both ribeye and rump steaks were chewy, scampy was soggy . The only dish that would be chosen again was the burger which got a rating of 7/10. Staff were friendly and plentiful, about the only plus!

Took my girlfriend here once. Ordered a bottle of wine and a couple of meals. When the waitress came to our table she handed us two filthy wineglasses. I complained so she went to find another two glasses, which were just as dirty. When I wrote a complaint to the Manager the next day, he responded in writing by saying his dish-washer had been audited by an "independent Food Hygiene Agency" - wow! The food itself was okay but certainly nothing special.

Cheap beer, reasonable priced food too.
Middle of nowhere so most people have to drive to it.
I wouldnt go there for a load of drinks, but nice place to eat and have a couple.

Nice pub. Seems mostly for dinners and people driving as not residential.
Had spitfire, landlord and harveys 2.40 - 2.80 of good quality

What a lovely setting this pub/restaurant sits in. It could be so good and yet it falls a long way short of that. The food is expensive for what it is and the staff are too busy talking about themselves together to notice customers.
My suggestion would be - bring your prices down to meet the standard of food or raise your food standards to meet the prices charged.
Maybe this is the reason that most people were sitting drinking and not eating and there was plenty of room.

Ventured in to this pub with my wife and two young children for a bite to eat.

The pub itself is nice and it has probably the best male toilets in worthing. Very clean.

The only thing that let it down was the food, though edible it was nothing special and a bit overpriced for what is was.

I had the burger and chips (8) a handful of chips and a burger in a bun. For 8 I expected at least a side salad.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't go here just don't expect a decent meal.

Thank you cledlyn, clears that one up with no nonsense. Others please note, this pub / restaurant is also titled 'Something' on this site. 1/10.

Biker - 7 Feb 2008 14:17
Since 'bikers' review this pub has been developed by the Mitchells and Butlers chain. There is no real ale and the emphasis is restaurant and bar food. Speaking of which, keep well clear of the steak, mushroom and Guinness pie. Its the only dish the chef can't make a judgement on the sell by date.
In my case our meal was completely ruined by by the presentation of a pie that had been forgotten at the back of the warming oven and tasted like a raw OXO cube.
The pub staff and Mitchells and Butlers seem to pre-occupied to be bothered. Maybe thats why the company lost 247m last year and standards have dropped.

Has anyone tried it recently ? In the past it started as one of the best in this area but slipped quite suddenly. No rating left, will visit again in early 08.
