First of 7 pubs we tried in Newtown. This was the only one on the North side of the River Severn. Truly a locals pub, there were only 2 or 3 other customers. 1 ale was on - Monty's MPA. There was also a real cider - Blaengawney Halletts. CAMRA discounts are offered on both the ale and cider and for halves as well as pints. Seemed reasonably friendly.

Stayed here last Bank Holiday week end and all was fine. (Breakfast could have been better though) Clean and tidy rooms. Good selection of real ales at reasonable prices.

Called in last Sunday and found it to be the only place in town that was busy. The reason though was that the landlady was leaving and saying farewell. New owner now in charge so what it will be like on a normal day no idea. Will probably lose its GBG listing though.

Oh, and it's got a pool table ad their Sunday lunch is excellent.

This pub's been up and down a bit over the years but right at the momment it's on top form. The current managers are doing a fantastic job and the beers better than a lot of the town's other pubs (the Ruddles Best is a good session ale and they keep it well here). Saturdays they have bands and I've yet to see a dodgy one. Always worth a visit before, after or in between visits to The Wagon and The Railway.

Nice friendly atmosphere, but no MILD so didn't drink here.

Live bands (Sat), Real Ale (very reasonable prices),bit of an odd shaped place for live entertainment but tries hard.
