A week away (Monday and Friday nights).
Traditional ancient pub, good beer (Sam Smith's OBB) good food and conversation with a few customers and the landlord (Mon). Friday was a bit busier so only had a beer - interestingly the only pub on this bit of Newport High Street that didn't have door security.

So does this pub still serve ssobb on handpull ? Planning on a visit to Newport and fancy to reaquainte myself with a this iconic Yorkshire brew.

A real quality Samuel Smiths pub that offers all of the usual Sam Smiths fair. I went for a pint of the Double stout & it was excellent.
Old fashioned timber interior, loads of historic pictures on the walls including a great homage to the trainsporter bridge.
Nice welcome from the landlord, with around half a dozen locals at the bar chatting away.
I can understand why this gets all the accolades it's a cracking little pub.

best pub in central Newport, yes I know but it's an accolade of sorts.
|
Built in the 16th century, said to be Newport's oldest pub. Excellent quality Sam Smith's beers and German-style beers (lagers).

As good as Newport's pubs get (a 5). The usual Sam Smiths museum piece although unlike the others this one was packed and echoing to raucous shouts and maniacal laughter ( at 5pm). Looks the least likely pub in Newport centre that you will end up in a fight... well you will only end up in the one fight here as opposed to two or three in the others.

Great pub. Sells Sam Smiths OBB as a real ale, which you don't find very often. Staff and locals friendly. Also do a nice wheat beer.

Very yummy pint of Sam Smith's Stout was supped here couple of weeks back, friendly service and reasonably busy for a sunday evening i guess, 7/10
|
I visit here every so often, but recent visits have found the place usually empty and soulless, though the ale is good. Can't say much else either way.

Excellent pub and not too dear.Good pint of Sam Smiths.A welcome change from the huge pubs in the vicinity.

THE pub to go to in Newport. A finer pint you'll never find in Newport, as a Samuel Smiths pub the beer is kept in good condition a varied range of ales, stout and lagers. Friendly staff and good service are what you get here, even on a Saturday night you'll have an eclectic crowd in but no chavs, the managers won't have them in there!! Beware though, don't have too many pints of "Man in a box"!!

Easily the best pub we visited in Newport with excellent ale and friendly atmosphere. Had a wander round to see the different areas and enjoyed the unchanged over time kind of feel to the place.

Quality in a sea of theme pubs. Great Sam Smith beer too.

This pub has a welcoming old-fashioned feel to it, as befits the oldest pub in Newport. Of particular interest is the back section with its partitions, oak panelling throughout and photos of old Newport. As I'm not keen on the Old Brewery Bitter, I decided to try Sam Smith's Extra Stout which I found very enjoyable. Well worth a visit.
