Golden Lion, Barnard Castleback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
I was in Barnard Castle recently so decided to try a couple of pubs. First stop, the Golden Lion.
7 pumps, one of which was offering cider, the remaining real ale. Marstons seems to be the ale of choice in here - I think I remember seeing Pedigree and New World Pale Ale on offer. I went for a half of Selador, also a Marstons ale, but one I have not heard of before so thought it was worth a try. The half was £1.45 so presumably a pint would have been £2.90 or thereabouts.
There were a few people in watching the sport on the TV in the front bar. The back room was empty so I stayed in the front. Service was quick.
As for the Selador - it was perhaps a bit warmer than it should have been, and I can only describe it as tasting a bit "savoury". Imagine making beer out of sausage rolls, and you kind of get an idea of what I was dealing with here. I was not sorry I only ordered a half!

The best of the pubs visited in town, reputedly the oldest. Large selection of ales available, wish I could have stayed longer.

Reliable pub but first time in 25 years + drinking in pubs that i have had my change given back in the actual pint !! Dozey barmaid said it was her "off" day but hey dont worry will get my change once drunk down to the bottom of the pint. Apart from this one off experience a good pub generally and one of the best real ale pubs in Teesdale.

Seems to always sell Jennings Cumberland Ale now btw, it's only ale.
|
Just to add, the ale is around 2.36 or some other random amount. Cheaper than the average (which I would say is around 2.60).

Friendly landlord. Only one ale; Jennings Cumberland Ale, pretty average but decently priced.

Late comment from August. Not too clean round the tables. Had a Jennings beer that was average.

Better than average non-pc town pub with historic features, average food and jukebox. Beer is not exceptional apart from the Cask Strongarm which is very good value. Seperate restaurant area, though has nice low ceilings and fireplace that suggests Cromwells time and an England that is fast vanishing.
