NOW CALLED 'THE BLACK SHEEP' UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT RECENTLY AND EVERYONE I'VE TAKEN THERE SAYS GREAT PUB, BEER AND FOOD..POSSIBLY WORTHY ON A 9...

Popped in last night, looking for food, and was not disappointed. Limited selection of two real ales, but both tasted well-kept. The food was excellent. I eat out most nights as a result of my occupation and this grub was definitely in the top ten percentile. Only downside was the fact that the atmosphere seems to have been ripped out by the usual refurbishment-mania. Very bland and modern. Oh, and the fact that the otherwise good service was marred by the barman constantly calling me 'Buddy'. I'm not your buddy, buddy.

First time back since it re-opened. Nice to see it is just as good

Unfortunately, there were not a lot of customers, (Sunday lunchtime!) which, bearing in mind some of the previous reviews, I found quite surprising. This meant that there was a lack of atmosphere, and the two bar/waiting staff seemed to need charisma pills. The food was good. Lovely piece of roast beef, but the fish cake was more cake than fish. However, the Village Idiot was on fine form. A return visit? The Ben Jonson would not be my first choice.

We have come here two nights in a row. The service, food and beer have been outstanding both nights. We will continue to come back!

Cosy and welcoming, this is where we go for our favourite pub food. The beer's good too and there's a good selection of wine. Good all round
|
A constantly changing selection of local ales keeps me popping in here and my wife likes their wine list so we both have a reason for going. Best book if you want to eat at the weekends though.

Pop in quite regularly on my way home from work and the beer is always in good condition. Recent refurb has improved the feel. Haven't tried the food but it always looks good

I really recommend this pub. The Ben Jonson has a really nice atmosphere and the food is yummy. I'm lucky enough to live just around the corner so I've tried nearly all the menu and it is all great. Fortunately they keep changing the menu so I have an excuse to keep going back!

Nice place for dinner. Worth a visit

Great location and nice inside, although slightly chilly in the extension but it was -5 outside! Menu was varied and reasonably priced. The starters we had were tasty and well presented, the roast was a huge portion, tender beef pink in the middle, great gravy and fine roast veg. Our waiter was very polite and helpful and we enjoyed chatting with him. Wine list was extensive and good quality. We will definately be back.

I'd seen some bad reviews for the Ben Jonson on here, but a good review in the Oxford Mail and its attractive apperance convinced me to try it out. Good move is all I can say, food was fresh, tasty and really well cooked. Great menu, friendly staff and very well priced for a county gastro-pub. Good choice of beers from Adnams, Hooky and Green King (if you must!) I'd certainly recommend giving it a try if the service was as good as we had

Had bad meal here, poor food and service, when reported no response from staff - sad really as in great location

Expensive and not good value. Roast Beef not very tender. Food rather cold. Coffee not very hot either. Not enough roast potatoes. Some desserts not available because they had not been taken out of the freezer early enough. Request for cheese and biscuits to be only cheddar cheese not listened to so all cheeses supplied. Overall would not go there again and would not recommend.

This pub has been completely redone since I was last here, and there has been a great improvement! I stopped here with the girlies to break up a long car journey and we were all thankful we did. Atmosphere is great, good selection of wines and possibly oxfordshire's best looking barmen - Tall dark and hansome!! Highly reccommeded!!!

We visited this pub for lunch by chance. We were attending a wedding in the nearby manor house and decided against lunch there due to breathtakingly rip off prices. If you happen to be in the area this place is worth a visit as it is very picturesque and full of charm. We were the only customers in the pub at the time so the service was as you would expect - very friendly and welcoming. The landlord informed us that he was only temporary as the pub was changing hands. The food was good value for money and best of all fresh! Recommended!
