Sadly this pub has become poncy and very up itself. The bar staff used to be friendly, now they are mostly snobs who look you up and down disrespectfully if you don't look cool enough. There used to be a good mix of people, now it is mainly middle class snobs who won't talk to anyone else but their little party of friends. What was once a nice pub is now a nightmare pub.

Chose this as our venue for a couple of crisp ones and lunch at the halfway point in our Capital Ring walk yesterday. The N16 bitter was excellent and well-kept and the food also met with our approval. Friendly staff set the seal on a most enjoyable visit.
|
The Rose & Crown was another pub (similar to the Jolly Butchers) that seemes to attract a young and fairly trendy crowd. Although it has the feel of a more down to earth boozer. Beers on were Caledonian Golden XPA & Deuchars IPA, St Austell Tribute & Trumans Runner. Food seems to be popular.
|
First pub on way into stoke newington that wasnt totally poncified. Decent tribute, sat at bar, watching the north ldn jetset. Would come again.
|
Just popped in for a quick couple of pints when I was passing earlier in the year, and wished I could have stayed longer. I like this sort of large roomy urban pub, and this one hasn't had too much tinkering done to it. The atmosphere seemed relaxed and comfortable, the clientele quite mixed, and the beer I had (Cally Deuchars) was very drinkable. It's a bit off my normal territory, but I'd be very happy to go back for a few more any time.
|
Mixed feelings about his place. The good bits are that it's large, has a good range of ale (4 or 5), is lively and is friendly. But for me the interior is lacking. It doesn't have any warmth to it, not helped by the dull decor. The lighting wasn't quite right either, just a bit too bright and unsubtle.
Decent pint though and the food looked ok. Would drink here again but wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

Been here a few times now, it's a spacious, lovely-looking place with attentive bar staff and well-kept beer. The Haggis Hunter that is on at the moment is in superb condition. Yet to try the food but the menu is very tempting. A great pub.
|
Seriously though, this pub is great. I've been coming here for a while and cannot remember a bad pint of bitter . The food is good and there's a decent (if challenging) quiz on Tuesdays.
|
I really enjoy the atmosphere in this pub - genuine set of friendly, harmless locals who are all exceptionally welcoming. However, I must concur with the previous posts regarding food - I am aware after speaking to the Manager there, they have changed the chef recently but are aware of the problems and are trying to rectify them. Not a great help when the improvements hadn't taken place by the time our food arrived! But, they were apologetic and understanding. Also, definitely concur with the comments about Sundays being overrun with screaming uncontrolled intolerable babies, children and the like. If you must bring them to a pub, keep them quiet and out of the way, otherwise employ a babysitter!
|
the last comment (Niikko, 12 Apr) is clearly a plant aimed at restoring the balance from the two comments before that one. If he knows his stuff why is he serving crap? Never heard Rev James described as excellent, even by tastebudless major brewer drinkers. That's perhaps the biggest give away. Try again.
|
My favourite pub of the moment. Great beer and atmosphere. Landlord knows his beers. Reverend James is excellent. Well worth a visit. Great place to have Sunday lunch, always welcoming.
|
Was in last night and also served a short measure on a pint. Also had food, which wasn't brilliant, I think they may have changed the chef recently as the quality has slipped. Also dishes came not as described.
Food used to be exceptional at the pub, now descending into just ok. Like the guest bitters though and the atmosphere of the pub is generally good
|
Awful experience here the other night. The interior isn't bad and the beer range wasn't too disappointing - Duechars IPA, Reverend James, Pedigree, and a Hyde's. But then it all went wrong. A pint glass containing two-thirds of a pint of Reverend James was placed on the bar. Literally the shortest measure I've ever seen, the top inch wasn't even head, it had already settled to this low level. I do believe the barmaid was not going to top up. I asked "is this a pint to brim glass or is it lined?"...she didn't have a clue what I had just said so I repeated myself and eventually got her to reluctantly top it up. She returned with a stern "what is your question". I explained it to her a bit better..."oh". The beer turned out to be unpalatable. My friend's Deuchars wasn't any better. I struggled through a quarter of it, asked my friends to drink up so we could leave the place sharpish. Oh yeah, and this unpalatable beer cost 3.40.
In light of all this, some comments up here seem bizarre. Sure Parky.P has the right place?!

At the weekends this pub is now full of childrena and crying babies. This means that if you want to enjoy a nice meal (the food is good) you can't relax because there's just screaming kids everywhere.
Its local to me and used to come here alot but just can't relax here now. Shame.

One of the nicer traditional pubs in Stoke Newington. Probably the pick of the lot along Church Street.
|
Brilliant pub. Why?
1). Weekends are packed out come night-time, great atmosphere. Weekdays the pub is quiant - yes quaint - and a great environment to sup a pint in.
2). Good solid resident ales such as Pedigree and Deuchars. Now for the best bit - the guest ales. The guy behind the bar (Tom I think his name is) seems to be a real ale connoisseur. This means you are bound for a guest ale treat and its the type of place to offer you a taste first.
3). Its winter now so good to see a fire on the burn.
4). Yes they serve food in a little section of the pub, and its all good. They haven't turned the place into a soulless gastro pub.
This pub is a 15 minute walk (past a load of pubs) from my place and it's my adopted local.
|
I used to love this pub when Mabel ran it. The pub quiz used to be brilliant! Nowadays - forget it.. The quizmaster is full of himself ('it's your own time you're wasting' - knob!) and the place has lost all it's charm. I for one won't be going back!
|
As a bit of a traditionalist regarding pubs, I'm very impressed with what they have done here. Especially the outside where they have exposed some original features, like the beautiful lead signs, and brass pillars. For this they are to be applauded! As for the real ales, there were 4 on, most with perculiar names but very pleasant. Regarding the crisps I can't comment, although, I believe the Wetherspoons pub in the High St. do a wide range of sundries. Mr Prince, treat youself!
|
I think the new owners have done a good job of freshening up the pub without turning it into gastro hell.
had an good pint (or 4) or marstons pedigree.
Good bar staff and they usually have deuchars which i'm always a fan of.
I had the roast, it was pretty decent and I'm not sure 9-odd is ' expensive' compared to plenty of places in the area. and while the spuds were a little dry. the meat was excellent and the veg was good.
|
No Adnams any more, no crisps, dreadful expensive roast dinner - finding reasons for going getting fewer and fewer since its makeover. And it used to be so good.
|
the open wood fire makes for a cosy and warm pub the place has been cleaned through out sky sports is gone the ale is much better. the kitchens open in a couple of weeks and the menu looks great,a great pub returning to greatness
|
Went to this pub on a Sunday for a few pints with friends. The place was just clearing out the family lunch crowd and I got the impression that it was very child friendly or, at the very least, child tolerant from the amount of extended families who seemed to have popped in for lunch.
The beer was very reasonably priced. They had Scrumpy Jack on tap, which was a massive bonus as this is becoming near impossible to find in pubs. And I thought the interior was beautiful. A rare old unmodernised pub. I will definitely be going back regularly even though it involves a bus ride.
|
Not a great pub really.....Clearly was once divided into separate bars, evident by the numerous doors leading outside. Now just one large space. A bit like a Wetherspoons but with muzak. Draught beer just about ok. A nondescript pub.
|
We went on Sunday gone and each had a fantastic roast dinner, i thought the prices were very reasonable for the amount of freshly cooked grub that you got, and I had a decent pint of Thwaites as well. Very busy on a Sunday afternoon but worth a visit i reckon.
|
The quiz night is on Tuesdays and is OK. The quizmistress doesn't seem to be the one who set the questions, mind, as she has trouble with some of the names. Still, not bad. The beer is pretty standard: I drank John Smiths and Pedigree and it was good tucker.
|
A family friendly pub this isn't.
I used to go to this pub quite a lot. The last time I went however the staff were very rude and made me feel unwelcome because I had my 18 month old son with me.
It's fair enough if a pub doesn't want to be "family friendly" but just say so - preferably before I've ordered a meal and drink. I can do without the snippy comments and rudeness.
|
Probably my favourite pub in the area. Nice wines, and nice guest ales which are rotated regularly. The food is alright (a bit over priced for a Sunday roast maybe) and the pub quiz on Tuesdays is pretty good. Also a perfect Winter boozer.
I think rampantwurzle is confusing this pub with the Lion

On same night I went to Daniel Defoe, popped in here. Lovely little boozer with some beer. Now why is this better than the Daniel Defoe?
1. Bar Staff who actually serve you rather than twiddling hair and mock giggling at things the dirty letches at the bar say to them
2. It has hand-pulls - 4 to choose from if my drunken memory serves me correctly - and they're nice. And I'd never had bitter from Newton Abbot which is a lovely surprise.
3. A beer garden where
4. A pool table with DJ room upstairs. Like pool? Upstairs. Like music played at ear crunching decibels? Upstairs. It's not that I'm adverse to either, but it does at least mean you can chat and have a beer without having it knocked out of your hand either by sonic force or cue.
Will return no doubt.

Nice pub. Very tasty Sunday lunch. Staff and regulars are old school, but very welcoming.
|
This is a good traditional pub, with good beers and friendly service. Has a nice atmosphere to it that is conducive to the quick pint or a longer session. Best in the area.
|
This has always been a great pub with great food. It was my local for years until I had to move so can't visit as often as i would like. I wish there was pub like this in my neighbourhood - without the sports on telly though - that does spoil it.
PS: anonymous who thinks "Stokey" is a 'pet name' that has only been adopted by the middle class fools that have infiltrated the area - what nonsense. I lived in "Stokey" from 1982 and always remember it being called that......
|
The "Twerp" isn't from Islington - Turnpike Lane (twelve years previous - Lordship Park - so sort of from the area and before it was full of those who couldn't afford Islington - originally Scottish)... Admit I should have put "Stokey" in quotes as I was taking the piss of those very Middle Class types. Standby by what I said .. food overpriced. Sorry if a little mild criticism offends.

'Very Stokey'...Clearly not from Stoke Newington. That 'pet name' is only adopted by the middle class fools that have infiltrated the area. Go back to Islington you twerp.
Rant over.

Nice looking pub, but food is overpriced for what it is - expect that will offend many regulars. May not have jukebox blasting out music but football blaring out when more than half pub clearly not interested - very Stokey.

brilliant decor - classic unchanged 1920's decor, panelling and other 1920's details. Beers are good, not great, food is well above average on a sunday. One of the best pub in the area.
|
Great pub for grown ups who don't want to be deafened by a crappy jukebox, and who actually enjoy talking to each other over a drink. Fantastic Sunday lunches too.
|
Has become our local, having drunk in all the N16 boozers at some point. Great Sunday grub - Guest ales range from average to very good although they are not really kept and promoted with the passion that beer should be(such as the Defoe down the road). Wine selection is better than your average london boozer. Landlady is a diamond and the feel to the pub is friendly and cosy. Fire, wooden panelling and opaque glass ceiling makes for a cosy vibe.
|
Great traditional pub! Cosy, friendly and good quiz nights.

Excellent Sunday Roast. Good Beer.
|
Fantastic pub with a great atmosphere! Quiz nights on a Tuesday are always good for a laugh. Really friendly bar staff, good beer and the biggest selection of crisps i've ever seen! All round good pub, I've had some great nights there!

Nice typical London pub, apart from Friday and Saturday nights, the clientele is dull though.

Don't leave your bike outside. No matter how strong the lock the local bike theives will have it. Good pub though.
chris - 21 May 2004 13:58 |
Trad pub, Adnams on tap, Truman/Hanbury paneled interior, locals and cous-cous guzzlers side by side.

Took out 10 pounds from a cash machine the other night. Then went straight into the pub to buy a pint. Then bar maid told me I had given her 5 pounds, but I assured her that it was 10, as it was the only 10 I had (and that it was fresh from a cash machine) Anyway, after 20 minutes of pleading my case and also the landlord coming over and insulting me and being very aggressive (to a lady too). He accused me of causing trouble and threw us out, keeping my change. I wouldn't piss on this place if it was burning to the ground. A thoroughly horrible experience which makes me angry thinking about what an absolute common f***ing C**t the landlord was. I am seeking legal advice.

A proper pub that lets dogs in when not serving food. Not overpriced like many N16 pubs, good selection of wines, real fire, friendly people and spitting distance from Clissold Park.

Good beer, an older crowd than the Tup, and a pub quiz on the same day as them (Tuesday).

Like this pub, friendly Welcoming staff. Good old fashioned London Pub.
|
Lovely old pub with great big window looking out onto Church St. Good selection of real ales and friendly bar staff. Accomodation and good food.
