A proper country pub in a proper village with flint buildings. Friendly staff which always helps. Victorian style bar with added upper eating area. Three open fires and plenty of beer guides to read. Note the yellow swastikas on one fire place (not political). Visited twice in two days, real ale going from 3 to 4. Swift one at for £3.00 was fine, while Star - Portbello W10 was far better. Worth the trip on cycle just for that, but £3.50 was pricey. Food was also excellent, but lacked any vegy option. If you do visit make a 3 min walk up the hill to the church. Well worth it.

A pleasant welcome and a range of four real ales added to the picturesque location of this village pub. First in just after opening time and the beer was a perfect temperature. Ales on tap were Bowman - Swift One (3.8%), Long Man - Old Man (4.3%), Ringwood Boondoggle 4.2% and Andwell - Ruddy Darter (4.6%). The Bowman, Long Man and Andwell were very tasty - well worth the visit to this cosy friendly pub.

Absoltely brilliant. A n excellent local where we outsiders were made very welcome. There was a bar billiards game (match possibly) going on where they broke for a meal. We ate as well and the food was lovely. It took a while to come but undestandably as they had a few more to dinner than might have been there normally. The beer choice was good with 4 on including Hammerpot's Bottle Wreck Porter and Bowmans SwiftOne. When one ran out the cask was quickly changed. How refreshing. This pub is such a welcome change from the gastro pubs nearer London and yet did superb meals and ales.

Lovely pub in a lovely little village surrounded by excellent walking country. Good choice of beer from the likes of Dark Star and ballards. Food pretty good but pricey.

This type of pub may well be gone in another 10 years or so. Enjoy it while you can. We called in at lunchtime today (Monday) rather quiet when we arrived, just one small open fire with two locals ensconced on either side. Extensive lunchtime menu, I was the least adventurous going for the linguine, The others went for the sweetmeats. It wasn't long before a few more locals turned up, look out for the lady with the trio of Bedlington Terriers. We think the landlady was either French or Belgian we did not ask but she was a gem.

Now to business, the real ale, brilliant selection actually too many to recall, all beautifully kept. The food was very good & surprisingly not too expensive. If you are in the area it is worth a visit to this quirky little pub. Allow the experience to creep over you, don't judge it on what you see as you go through the door.

Great choice of beer and wonderful food,,staff seemed friendly espicially the female in the kitchen who came and chatted about the dinner. Well worth a visit if you are out that way.

Stopped off for lunch at this pub mid-way through a South Downs walk. Very friendly - both locals and bar staff, good service, tasty inexpensive food and wide selection of draft beers.

We went to this pub after our League victory and had some of the best beer of the season.A welcoming bunch of locals, great beer in the shape of Dark Star and Bowman as well as an extensive and well presented food Menu.If you ever venture into West Sussex from East Hampshire, then I THOROUGHLY recommend Coach and Horses at Compton.

Excellent range of beers and welcoming. Some of the best bar food in the area too.

I am surprised to find that this has only rated 4.2 on BITE, albeit by only 3 visitors. I last visited this place in 2003 and found it to be a corking little local in a beautiful village that had managed to retain a genuine sense of community about it. IT served an interesting range of beer, all well-kept, with a varied menu that looked like it would be worth sampling, and contrary to the anonymous commentator below, I found it to be most friendly. Happily, upon a return visit last weekend I found the same worthy features in place. The ale was very good, the food superb (my girlfriend had possibly the largest haunch of ribeye steak I'd ever seen and I had probably the best fish pie I've tasted in a pub), and the folk on both sides of the bar were very amenable. Despite making a rather cheeky request for table service, the lady serving was happy to fetch more beers from the bar and bring them over, which I thought was worth noting.
A cracking little place for a mellow Sunday afternoon session. Careful though: it is open all day.

Not very friendly at all. It's populated by people who speak in artificial, 'refained' accents who stare at strangers and make them feel unwelcome.

Normally has a good ale or two such as ESB. Lounge bar and dining room food is good.

Friendly village pub, nice staff who didn't mind our group invading. Proper bar billiards, good beer.
