Reopening soon - under new management - their website says.

Seems to be getting very close to reopening - after refurbishment.

It is indeed closed and closed very abruptly a couple of weeks ago. Apparently someone with reservations turned up to check into their room and it was shut with a steel door in place!
It has signs outside saying lease for sale so there is hope. Its a big place and seriously old so I think it will need someone with very deep pockets to take it on.

Closed.

Lovely feel to this place. Good beers. Smell of woodsmoke in the main bar. Many small snugs.

We went today for a change. Our first visit in over 20 years and will be returning again very soon. We had roast venison which was served with four different veg all cooked to perfection. The puddings were also nice but a bit more choice would have been a bonus. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, yet not in your face which is nice if you just want to be left alone. One little fault and it is only a little one, it was a bit cold in the restaurant due to no fire and the radiator by our table was stone cold. On the whole I would highly recommend a visit to this charming village and hotel.

Lovely pub , warm atmosphere, very friendly staff and excellent food and beer! We would go again and again if we lived in Surrey.
|
I have eaten here once before but only had a sandwich and chips there but ate here with my husband on a busy Sunday recently. There was a warm welcome, a lovely fire and we were seated immediately. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was wonderful. ..the portion size was fantastic and i look forward to coming going back soon!! i really enjoyed eating in such a lovely looking pub and look forward to going back.

Stayed at this pub/hotel over the weekend. Was very impressed by the welcome from the manager and staff. The room was clean and comfortable, the food was outstanding and the roaring fire in the bar area was most welcome on a cold day. Would thoroughly recommend a visit if you are passing.
|
Stayed here this weekend and would strongly recommend this pub/hotel. A very relaxing visit. The establishment has clearer been refurbished to a very high standard. Fantastic hospitality and amasing food. The breakfast is so good you'll not need to eat until the evening. Would recommend the sharing platters even if you just pop in for a drink.

I disagree with the last comments completely - the character has been put back into the place and it now has a great bar worth spending a night in. As for the food - 6 of us went in - had 6 different meals and they were all fantastic - the burger my wife had was clearly home made - at last somewhere that provides real burgers and the added bonus that everything was hot (including the plates) and the staff were friendly. So good to see somewhere that isn't doing 5 meals for 5 - quality is and always will be worth paying for - keep up the good work

Hotel now taken over by new management, previously the pub suffered from high prices and below average food. Pub has been revamped with all of the character removed to become a polished bar. Looks and feels like an empty box, hopefully if the re painted fire gets going in the winter it may recover some of it's historical character. Drinks prices have come down to match the competition and a Portuguese lager added, which some drinkers liked. Food has continued to be below standard, cold plates, cold vegetables, cheep bap on the burger and poor presentation. Bye the way the Haddock on the menu is smoked, some people would like to know up front. Considering this is their first week of business you would think they would make an effort, very sad. Went in on the evening of the Bank Holiday, which should not have made a difference.
|
Has all the potential to be a great pub but due to it's Hotel size and Hotel prices it just doesn't make it.
|
I would have to disagree with the person who did not enjoy ther burgers, my husband and i visit the Whyte Harte every Saturday for lunch and our burger and chips are excellent, as it is our favourite treat, surely you would have checked the prices before you bought. Oh by the way the pub was a manor house, and more than likely only served food from the 40's
|
I stayed last night at this wonderful hotel and the room was fantastic, clean and well presented! I will return to try the food and leave my feed back.
I had breakfast and service was exellent but wasn't to keen on the bacon (this is a personal preference)but I still cleaned the plate.
Guys keep up the good work.

While the interior is nice and warmly decorated, the food was not of a quality I would return for, a little on the expensive side also, 32.50 for 2 cokes, 2 burgers and a nacho's Nacho's: Very hot plate with overly deep fried tortilla chips served with luke warm chilli and melted cheese. Burger's: The burger itself was very tasty but served on a dry bun with no hint of a salad or mayo the 'side salad' a dolop of warm homemade coleslaw on a brown lettuce leaf. The fries tasted as if they had been fried in last weeks fish oil and as a result I ate only 1.
Friendly staff, crap food, nice interior, a bar thats been round since 1388 should have managed to get it right before now but sadly i feel that this will never be the case

Hi acdrac, really glad you enjoyed visiting us. As you like wine do you have any suggestions you would like to see on our winter menu. We have an excellent supplier who sources many vineyards for a good tipple, never to be found in any high street store. As for our ales we will keep you on your toes as we change about twice a month, my only re occuring ale is St Austell's tribute as we never seem to get enought of it. Hope to see you soon, thanks Evelyn

What a lovely pub. There aren't many old inns like this about - well we haven't found them. We live in Crawley and were told of this very tradtiional pub by some friends who stayed here on their way off on holiday. Evelyn and Harry were great hosts. The real ale was in excellent condition and we liked the wine list. We will be back to try the Sunday Roast.
|
I've eaten here a number of times - and the food was lovely and reasonably priced. The team serving always seem polite and friendly enough, certainly never rude. It's a nice village pub. My partner tells me the beer is good and I certainly enjoy the wine! I recently discovered the garden and might make it my sunny Sunday afternoon retreat!

Hi Simwilliams, Evelyn here, licensee of the Whyte Harte. aoplogies for taking so long to reply, i have recently discovered the site and i have to admit it is a awful website where people are more likely to bite ones head off than say anything nice. I can see most pubs dont get a decent review. However we strive to make the WH an enviroment second to none. Admittedly we cannot always get it right, but we try hard preferring to be acceptable at everything rather than only some things. Much has changed since your last post and would welcome your return and would even be happy to forgo your food expences and when you leave to update your recent comments. I shall be more actively involved in BITE from now on and hope to build a better buiness through constuctive criticism

Four of us had dinner here in early April - and were very disapointed with the food and service. Two of us had fish and chips which tasted of curry. After complaining, we were given the option of sending it back - but, having eaten here before, we were not confident of any improvement. The staff seemed quiet indifferent to our needs and we have no plans to return. Its a shame because its a fine building with great poential with the right management.
|
Not bad place for dinner and beers. Lovely pub only spoilt and let down by the foreign female manager who is rude and often looses the place business to the other nearby pubs. Young girl and new guy with glasses is excellent though and makes up for some of the other staff. Good beers that are kept well.
|
Wonderful old building with good (if over-priced) food and tolerable beer. The only thing that spoiled my last visit was the attitude of the manager. Not a very happy or welcoming man who seems not to understand what an Olde English coaching inn should be all about. Shan't be going again until there's a change in the management.
|
Nice public bar, there was a good atmosphere. Rather disapointingly at 10.50pm on a Friday night whilst we all had almost full pints they started stacking all the chairs up around us, I think to prompt us to leave! Shame.

Interesting building. Food only average (no mint sauce available to accompany lamb). Quick service but we were the only customers at 7.45pm. Good parking.

The most expensive pub in Bletchingley and not the friendliest. Over 11 quid for two large whiskys!!! I would not recommend to anyone.
|
Good food. Shame about the beer, but then again I suspect its more of a G&T gaff. Might go back if someone else is paying ...
|
Despite being a hotel, so you pay hotel prices (no I don't understand why either), it's very pubby and not too bad at all. It's suffered countless refurbishments, but still retains several drinking areas, exposed beams and open fires. Currenty going through a leather sofa phase but hopefully, like everywhere else, it'll get over that.
Worth making a trip for the beer, Ringwood and St Austell today as well as Pride, and all in good nick. Assming the rooms are OK it would be a good choice if you need to stay in the area and like your beer.
|
2.90 for a pint of London Pride? OMG!
No other complaints though...seems like a decent place to sink a few, if you can afford it!
|
I has been many years since I was last in this pub. Although the building has not changed the level of service was not as good as I remember when Derek King used to run it. The food was enjoyable, which was good after having to wait for ages. The drinks were well presented if a bit on the expensive side.
|
My experience of this pub was better than the previous three people as enjoyed my pint of Bombadier and the food, tho I would agree that it is a tad expensive. It has a great feel to it in the winter especially with the fire blazing in a huge fireplace. As for the garlic thing Gazelle you were unlucky I think; I've eaten here a few times without experiencing that.
|
Agree with comments below, good pint of London Pride, a pity the food was not to the same standard. Our waitress certainly didn't want to be there and a 10% service charge.
|
The Whyte Hart is a lovely building in the main high street in Bletchingley, The beer is good, but the food is questionable, be warned, the food is highly seasoned with Garlic, even Sunday Roast! (Giving stomach complaints.) Also very fatty food. Brought it to the attention of Manager to be told that it was normal! The staff whilst good gave the impression that they didnt want to be there. Shame, wont go again.
|
Hotel atmosphere with modern look and comfortable leather settees around an old fireplace. The Charles Wells Bombadiere lack flavour and the menu is expensive.
