Notwithstanding the previous comment, I would say that the Coach Makers Arms is a traditional, Home Counties style pub, serving Brakspears and other traditional ales, together with home-cooked food and snacks. Bead and Breakfast accommodation is available, and the pub is well-placed in relation to the Thames and other attractions in and around Wallingford.

A locals pub that doesn't really have a pub feel to it - the bit to the corner has more of a library feel to it. Had Pedigree and Brakspears on - the Brakspears was drinkable.Didn't fancy another though.

My wife and I popped into this pub on a quiet afternoon hoping for a beer and something to eat. Despite the fact that it was close to the afternoon closing time (3pm) and that they had stopped serving food, Roni, the charming landlady offered to make a sandwiches of our choice. The freshly made sandwiches and Brakespear ale went down a treat. True, this pub does not have the 'premium' river frontage that so many who visit Wallingford demand but it makes up for it with it's atmosphere and friendly welcome. Incidentally, I have to disagree with a previous comment about the garden. Although quite small it has been imaginatively re-designed to make the most of the space and provides ample 'table-bench' seating. It is also neat and tidy and has a cosy feel to it. It has been mentioned that the pub also has successful theme evenings. Roni, informed me that the next one is a 'Caribbean night'. I'm only sorry that it's not my local otherwise I would be there! P.S. I gather the pub does not generally serve hot meals in the evening but to be sure it would be best to contact the pub direct.

First knew this pub ca 1980 when I used it as a watering hole whilst passing by on the Thames - at the time the best pub in Wallingford. 30 years later and rather smartened up, it is still probably the place to go in town for pleasant and comfortable surroundings, first-rate quality beer (Brakspear's Bitter plus A.N.Other) and good conversation, as well as excellent service - Roni DOES run a friendly establishment. May not appeal to the folk using the Boathouse or the Dolphin, but to anyone who likes to relax in a pub, this is where to go in Wallingford.

Visited while camping nearby. Very nicely set out inside and very welcoming host. Beer was fine and the food excellent quality and value. The garden out the back could do with a little tittivation but is sheltered and probably a suntrap during the day. I was surprised it wasn't busier.

Wallingford always was a mixed bag when it came to pubs. The Coachmaker's however remains the best one at this end of town, more so now with the long decline and eventual demise of the opposition across the way. Because of its situation it's always going to be a locals' pub rather than special trip material, but there's nothing wrong with that. All rather too bright inside at the moment, too much white paint but hopefully that will fade in time. Friendly welcome and the beer in reasonable though not perfect condition the other day,

Was in here last night for early doors, place was packed out, Brakspears and Pride of the River both tasted beautiful, a credit to the landlady Roni, she is a little treasure, this surely is the place to be in Wallingford now.

Most probably the best pub in Wallingford, for its great atmosphere, great Landlords (Ronnie and Bob) and great Beer (Brakespears + guest from time to time) What more can you wish for?

Great pub, lovely atmosphere and good mix of locals and visitors. Roni is a superb landlady and has done a great job turning this place around.Meals are lovely and features the 'gut busting' Roni Roast on a Sunday, which I have missed since she left The Cross Keys.

Arrived at The Coachmakers Arms after a long walk with friends in the snow. We received a very warm welcome from Roni and Bob and whats more those roast potatoes we had been dreaming of were waiting for us on the bar (delicious!). This pub is definitely our favorite local watering hole, and if the tatties were anything to go by, then we cant wait to sample the menu soon. Good to see our favorite landlady behind the bar once again. Reckon this place will become even more popular when word gets out. So give it a try. Thoroughly recommended.

Great welcome for two drinkers and dog, the best Braksepear's Bitter for miles and an excellent bowl of home made tomato soup. Ronnie (formerly of the Cross Keys) has transformed this place and it will now be one of my regulars.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for bed and breakfast and the room was a real surprise; spotlessly clean, spacious, modern and chic. And a bargain for this area. We were made to feel right at home by Roni, the landlady (what a gem she is), and the breakfast in the morning was excellent. In the evening the atmosphere was that of a good old English country pub - hard to find these days. Wonderful service, good ale and a food menu that offered just what we fancied. I couldn't rate this pub highly enough. Thanks Roni for making our stay so special - we'll be back soon.

this pub will be the jewel in the crown for wallingford beer is consistently 1st class coupled with a fantastic atmosphere the nice people of wallingford already making their way here it can only get better food definately worth trying especially the sausage n mash lovely room for bed n breakfast

Popped in again last night. Great atmosphere, nice and busy for a Tuesday night. Brakspear's Ordianary was so good (easily 4/5) I didn't try the Oxford Gold.
Good to see a new dart board, lights and scoreboard down one end getting plenty of use! Great welcome from Ronni and Bob. Must try the food next time.
Mexican night looks like a must - where did I put my moustache and sombrero?

Good pub. Pleasant atmosphere and crowd (apparently a refurb about a year ago, judging by other comments and appearances), wooden floorboards and old wood tables n chairs, lots of books and a few implements on the walls, plus a mounted impala head making a change from the usual stag! 2 main rooms and a bar area, all quite cosy. Three handpumps, but the 2 Brakspear bitter clips were turned around and the only bitter was a seasonal Brakspear. Has a food menu which looked good. Well worth a visit.
|
Much, much better than previously. Eamon has left to be replaced by Ronni (ex-Cross Keys) What a turn-around. It makes you feel welcome the moment you step into the place.
Beer on top-notch form, especially the Brakspear's Ordinary. Good to see the Special too - seems to be a seaonal ale offering these days. I wonder if we'll see Old ale making a comeback?
|
Have heard that despite my (grudging)comments above, this is actually much improved. Will attempt a visit and full review ASAP.
|
Currently shut for a (very?) modest refurb, still a Brakspear's pub.
Looks set to re-open soon, pity they don't seem to have bothered to improve the patio area at the back. Will report again soon.
