The Castle Inn, Ottershaw

As with other comments, the price of beer is the problem here. Popped into the Castle with my son and was charged 7.20 for two pints of Abbot's Ale. Mind you, at least the landlord should enjoy a comfortable retiremen!

The Coachmakers Arms, Wallingford

My wife and I popped into this pub on a quiet afternoon hoping for a beer and something to eat. Despite the fact that it was close to the afternoon closing time (3pm) and that they had stopped serving food, Roni, the charming landlady offered to make a sandwiches of our choice. The freshly made sandwiches and Brakespear ale went down a treat. True, this pub does not have the 'premium' river frontage that so many who visit Wallingford demand but it makes up for it with it's atmosphere and friendly welcome. Incidentally, I have to disagree with a previous comment about the garden. Although quite small it has been imaginatively re-designed to make the most of the space and provides ample 'table-bench' seating. It is also neat and tidy and has a cosy feel to it.
It has been mentioned that the pub also has successful theme evenings. Roni, informed me that the next one is a 'Caribbean night'. I'm only sorry that it's not my local otherwise I would be there!
P.S. I gather the pub does not generally serve hot meals in the evening but to be sure it would be best to contact the pub direct.
