user reviews of the Three Bishops, Brighstone

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Family-type pub with a large open-plan interior and a garden complete with childrens' play area. 4 beers were on - Youngs Bitter, Sharps Doom Bar, Greene King Abbot Ale & Hopback Summer Lightning. Stowford Press was the cider. The village of Brighstone is fairly nice and this makes for a nice stop on a summer's day.

A bit souless and no local ales on offer. Felt more like a psuedo-gastropub in Wandsworth than an Isle of Wight Country Inn.

Still, at least it's open.

Been there thrice recently, mainly because it's basically the only pub in the village. On the first occasion we ate. It wasn't busy, we were in the old part of the pub at the top next to the bar, but they wouldn't run a tab without a credit card or similar behind the bar, which is an absolute no-no as far as I'm concerned. I would have understood if we'd been in the garden or even in a far-flung part of the restaurant, but we weren't. That sort of got us off on a bit of a bad footing. The dressed crab looked good, but it turned out the sides were filled out with salad rather than crab meat, which felt very mean indeed given the cost. The pie I had was very average indeed. The beer is okay, not great, but not terrible. The Timothy Taylor Landlord seems to be the best bet. The pub doesn't seem to be as busy as it was, even now it's school holidays. I think it needs to up its game.

Been here loads of times and never had any complaints. We normally have a bite to eat and go for the baquettes a meal in it's self. The pub is clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. Compared to a lot of pubs on the Island these days this one is welcoming and off the beaten track and never crowded when we have been in winter or summer.

We have visited this Pub before and enjoyed the food and atmosphere -good to be allowed to take our dog in too. This Easter we went in for a cream tea and sadly were not that impressed this time. Not cheap, not that tasty and the "pot of tea for two" had just one very weak tea bag. The pub looks good and has been improved but after this we did not return. Instead went to The White Lion at Niton, The Buddle Inn, and The Spyglass at Ventnor. All excellent with loads of atmosphere and good food and beers.

Visited over Easter. Large dining area out the back seems to be for the grockles, original pub near the road is where the locals seem to end up! Staff OK, landlord OK, beer OK, food didn't look much, but we didn't try it so can't really comment. CCTV cameras everywhere which is horrible and unnecessary -- last time I heard Brighstone wasn't exactly a crime hotspot! Pubs are tricky on the Island because of the tourists. This one isn't bad, but it isn't great, either. Date: April.10

I have visited the Three Bishops on a number of occasions and to be very honest it is slipping in quality.

The landlord is approachable but is not exactly friendly. The landlady is invisible. You can actually hear her shouting at the kids from upstairs or having a fag with the cooks out the back but she is never in the bar.

The beer used to be excellent but two real ales I have had there recently were below par. The sparkly bar staff who were such an asset now seem to spend more time chatting to each other.

The food is a problem. It used to be of high quality but now the veg tastes microwaved and the meat is of cheaper cuts.

It would not take a lot of effort to put this potentially great pub back to a high standard but sadly the effort is not forthcoming.

Visited August 2009. We are locals but The Three Bishops used to be a bit of a dive, so avoided it for a long time. Its rival (where we went more often, but frankly never inspired) is apparently struggling post "issues" of a suspicious nature. The Three Bishops isn't really my favoured sort of pub: chain, average-looking food menu, too big, too "family-oriented", etc. -- unfortunately all too common on the IoW. But to be fair (we only had drinks) it was quite good, the play area was useful for our children, the beer was okay (better than many) and it served us well for the purpose. Not really a pub to get excited about, but better than I thought it might be.

Hi all,

returned from the Isle yesterday and wanted to say thankyou to the staff of the Three Bishops,we went in a few times, the food was great, good quality and plenty of it (hmm especially the sea food), the welcome was fantastic and the staff took the time to chat and take an interest in us as visitors, Its really good that you allow dogs IN the pub, this is unusual these days and certainly welcome on a rainy day like Saturday of last week.

I would recommend it, and the fact you put a 'warts and all' visitors book on the bar is very brave, but no complaints from us..

thanks again and hope to return in future.

P.S i didnt try the countryman, but will do next time, just in case anyone thinks im bias.

p.p.s also I didnt see any Police IN any pub car parks, but was surprised at the high profile of the police have in the village generally, anyone know the reason? just an observation..

p.p.p.s Its a real Shame the Isle doesnt have a larger thriving ale producing community, most of the ales are 'imported' I think the Isle could do itself justice with loads of its own micro breweries..

I called in here last March with 3 friends. It was a Saturday night and a very unwelcoming atmosphere. We only popped in as it was on our bus route.
The ale was fine. We had a selection between us. Reluctant to return however due to the local elite making visitors feel uneasy and guarded.

Went walking around the IOW last weekend, and had booked accomodation in Brighstone. Despite some of the comments in this page, we were too tired to walk any further than the Three Bishops. Having said that, we found the pub to be absolutely fine - 4 real ales and good standard pub food. Nothing remarkably special, but nothing wrong with it either. We asked our B&B owner (a local) about the pub also, and he recommended it. From comment on this page, and on the Countryman's, it looks like some petty squabbling going on, which can only harm both establishments.

Shame really, looks like a great pub, but unfortuanlly looks can be decptive, got off the bus with my freind and met 2 unhappy customers on the way out, but still give it a chance, ordered some very expensive beer, and some chips as nibbles but couldnt stomach either, i dont like give bad comments but something has to said, it was a very unpleasnt experience, i would recomend either the sun inn for great ale or the countryman for great food and beer (on the same buss route)

Unfortunatly some people cannot succeed in their own businesses so feel the need to slag down others in the hope of picking up afew morsels of extra trade. Pathetic really .... hopefully readers will make their own assumptions and go and try for themselves... ps/ read the guest book left on the bar for a true picture of what customers think.

Went back for a second chance as was visiting again. Nice looking pub on the inside, beer and all drinks expensive, ask for a 1/2 coke and they fill up the glass with ice, ordered Garlic Bread to see what the food was like - came out on uncooked bread, raw garlic thrown on top, and unmelted butter, my husband ordered chips, they were floppy and slightly raw and uneatable. Overheard others complaining that the food was not cooked properly and some food was tasteless!! Wouldn't reccomend for drinks or food, both in quality and price. Staff looked bored and heard them complaining about the boss, called him Herr Otto Flick, (Allo Allo), must admit he is spitting image! (Coolbadger may own the pub if you look at comments???)

Last guy must have been blind. The Three Bishops has 4 lagers on tap, plus Guiness and a lovely Pear Cider. And four real ales. Good selection of bottled beers. The community use this pub for meals over and over again. The food is excellent and the staff charming.
coolbadger - 7 Feb 2009 11:36
Called in just for beer on walking day out - usual dominance of heavy, dark, strong ales - just what you don't want on a hot summers day! No wonder lager drinkers don't want to change! Seriously wondered why it was in the Good Beer Guide. The 3.10 for two halves finished it off for us - won't be back.

SUPERB meal. Great ales. Lovely staff. Highly recommended. A+++++

Very disapointed. Not only by the staff, the barman was arrogant and smelt of beer, he gave the attitude of he just wanted your money and was asking for us to buy him a drink. We did eat there and the food tasted as though it were frozen, and while we were there we saw the frozen food delivery van. Awful really when your paying for a pie and its frozen, at 8.00. The plates were also cold, and so was the food, when I told the barman he stated that we are a pub we don't do hot plates. Disgusting attitude to paying customers, never going back again. The Sun Inn at Hulverstone is much more appealing.

The Three Bishops in Brighstone is quite rightly the hub of this friendly local community. Lovely atmosphere. Large beer garden, two large bars and some excellent well kept beers. Chris and Helen have completely refurbished the Three Bishops to a very high standard. The menu is very good and the food excellent. Chris changes the real ales every week and brings in some excellent brews. There is also a good range of bottled beers and draught lagers and if course Guinness. The pub is dog-friendly which will be a bonus to holidaymakers. Large car park and some excellent walks nearby. You will not be disappointed with the Three Bishops.

Have had a couple of visits of late and enjoyed both. Beer is well kept and the food has been both well priced and good quality.

Visited this pub and have to agree with the last comment. Obviously the new owners have cleaned up the decor and general feeling in the pub as we found it to be a delightful place to both eat and drink. Yes the pub is in need of a facelift but the landlady was keen to tell us of all the improvements that will happen this winter, new windows, doors, paintwork, extensive garden regeneration, kids area and loads more i can't remember. The food was excellent and we felt cooked to perfection and worth noting freshly to order, not from the freezer as is so common nowadays.
4 real ales and a great choice, all in all a very good experience, we look forward to visiting again after the completed works.

This pub has recently been given a change of ownership and the new landlord and landlady have done wonders in a very short period of time.
It is has a much more welcoming feel and the food is extremely good value for money, particularly the Sunday roast at 5.99 for 3 courses.
There are a lot of nice touches, for example, you order a sandwich and you get one made with proper, fresh bread, not pre-packed rubbish and it comes served with a nice side salad and some crisps.
There is also a much wider choice of drinks, including 4 real ales.
The interior has been cleaned thouroughly since their arrival and apparently will be undergoing a nice refit in the new year.
To summarise, good food, friendly staff, and very good value. Recommended.

Unfortunately, everything about this pub seemed to be wrong. My primary concern was the poor standard of the food as the grilled plaice looked unappetising and was undercooked (ie streaks of blood inside!) and the veggie burger was embarrasingly burned. Considering the price of the plaice was 10 quid it was a major disappointment. The decor was also quite shabby with countless rawl plugs hanging out of the walls and another coat of paint required, alongside 80's throwback wallpaperand carpets, meant that the whole experience was below par. A shame really as the place looked inviting on the outside and the selection of drinks was more than adequate! As a previous comment stated, this is very much a local pub for local people, but this place could be much improved with a few adjustments.
