We've visited here a few times when out walking for a drink or two and always enjoyed the garden on a sunny day and the cosy ambience in winter. Recently we decided to have lunch and was not disappointed! The menu has lots of choice and reasonably priced, especially with the portions being generous. The ploughmans was ample and nearly finished me off, but even better to see it wasn't garnished with a slice of orange (which is a frequent oddity on the Island). The Landlady and staff are friendly and approachable, which always makes a pleasant experience. Beer selection could be a bit more interesting, on were: Doom Bar, Yates's Islander (well kept), Abbot. Garden Cider Co in bottles and the wine was acceptable. Overall, a great lunchtime.

The White Horse is a fairly large pub with 3 large rooms. Most people were in the central bar area. But there were a couple in the large dining area at the top and another small group in another room at the bottom. Children aren't allowed in the bar area. Dogs are not allowed in the dining areas. 3 ales on were Ghost Ship, Abbot & Lancaster Bomber. Bar staff seemed surprised that somebody who wasn't local would only be there for a drink. A touch disappointing.

You waltz into a pub and ask for a table for 18, the girl behind the jump doesn't bat an eyelid but musters the staff and does the business. The beer's good with several bitters on tap including the local brews by Goddards & Yates. The food is excellent and the service sublime. Nuff said, 10 points!

As a regular visitor to the Isle of Wight I have found the hospitality at all pubs and restaurants to be very frendly indeed - however the White Horse takes this one step further, the landlord Matt being the ultimate 'bloody nice bloke' made me and mine feel like old friends rather than just another group of punters -
Food is excellent too - and as has been repeated by other reviewers - the portions are huge (the 32oz steak I highly recommend). And to cap it all - they serve Goddards Fugle de Dum - a local ale that will in itself ensure that I re-visit the island as often as I can.
As my dear old dad would have summed up - " bleeding 'ansome"

I enjoyed a pint of Ringwood Best here, served in very good condition. At lunchtime, food seems to be an important part of their trade, and I don't recall seeing anyone only enjoying a drink on either visit.

That said, the grilled plaice from the blackboard was excellent - wonderfully fresh. Went back a few times just for that. With a pint, the bill came to 15.05.

Very friendly staff and prompt service. Quite busy for a weekday lunchtime, given the relatively remote location.

Oh, and ball-poking may be enjoyed here too. For those who enjoy that sort of thing.

Fairly typical of an Island pub with a large "family dining" open-plan extension in addition to the original small pub building. The original building is lovely; the extension isn't. But that's the nature of the game and is, regrettably, essential to cater for the hordes of grockles and their offspring which blight (sorry, grace) the Island from Easter to October. Food menu looked extensive and portions generous, and is reportedly very good indeed (or so the locals say). One step up from the normal IoW pub grub offerings. Choice of beers was OK, not extensive in the ale department, but adequate and what they did have was well kept and highly palletable. I can recommend the (local) Yates Holy Joe, though can't promise this isn't seasonal and/or a guest beer. I'd rate this as one of the better establishments on the Island. Date: April.10

The White Horse has always been popular, and remains so

The feature of this pub restaurant is the excellent food, which always comes in huge portions. The menu is very extensive and more restaurant based than pub food. Examples of the portions included double pork escalopes, half a roast duck and a special mixed grill that boasts 52oz of meat

Booking is only possible for parties of 10 or more. Otherwise, you need to turn up and wait for a table or arrive after 8pm. Tables within the pub are nicer than the family room but you seldom get the choice. The service is impressively quick and the staff very friendly

Strongly recommended but make sure youre hungry

Very popular with a good selection of well kept ales, and a huge menu plus regular changing specials, all of which are always delicous. It would be great if it opened and did food all day, but the owner is also the chef! We generally go off peak times to avoid waiting for a table!

Very nice food (but a little too much like a restaurant) and well kept ales. Would benefit from opening during the day (at least during holidays and weekends) as it was really busy as soon as it opened at 6:00pm.
