Poacher's Inn, Ideback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Friendly village pub, with a lovely, cosy interior. Locals were having a philosophical debate about the short-term future of the country, given the arrival of coronavirus. They were interested to hear from somebody who was out of town and trying to visit every pub in the country. Sadly, I think my quest may become too easy soon. But I really hope that village locals like this survive the current crisis, as they are integral to our heritage. The ale range was good - Branscombe Vale Branoc, Exeter Tomahawk & Darkness, Salcombe Lifesaver & South Hams Eddystone. The Darkness was the first dark beer I'd seen all weekend in what was my 23rd pub!

A simply wonderful place. Inside is very charming and quirky and outside is a wonderful beer garden with views over fields. Nice selection of ales too. Ide is an absolute gem of a place and the Huntsman pub down the road is worth a visit too.
10/10

Lovely quiet pub for a mid-week afternoon read of the paper and a pint. Friendly lad behind the bar, a roaring fire and good beer selection - sadly all pretty much the same ABVs, but well kept all the same.

this pub ticks every box. Friendly, laid back landlord. Lovely Boxer dog roaming around. Cosy, tasteful interior with a real fire. Fellow diners/drinkers were a really nice bunch. Superb good value food and really well kept ales including the dark and dangerous Exmoor Beast. If our local was half as good as this we would end up broke ! An absulute gem, one of the best pubs we"ve been in for years.

A previous comment was that this is almost the perfect pub and that all it needed to make it perfect would be an open fire. Well, I visited yesterday, found a roaring fire and, for the first time in dozens of ratings, I'm giving this pub 10 out of 10. The real ales were a delight (see their website for details), the food was wholesome and generous, the staff were wonderfully friendly and the landlord held Court to the amusement of all. It took me back to a time when the community, young and old, all came to the pub and the place hummed with the buzz of happy people chatting over a drink. I liked it so much that I even stayed the night. Lovely room, wonderful view over Devon hills and a proper breakfast. Thank you Tony.

The landlord was strangely surly when we visited (but perhaps someone had annoyed him, or maybe that's part of his charm) and served the regulars before us strangers. Couldn't fault the range of 5 real ales and the 3 that we tried were excellent. The beer garden is nice but it is shared with two boxer dogs so beware where you walk.

Almost the perfect pub! The only thing missing is a roaring fire. Great choice of ales, friendly and lively atmosphere and you can even get b&b..... Who could want more?

Great choice of local ales, quality food (fish and chips was good), roaring fire sort of pub, well worth a visit.

It was a nice day so we took a walk over to Ide via the Lamb at Longdown. There's no change at the Poachers since our last visit. Still 5 beers on with a nice variety of strengths ranging from Branoc at 3.8% up to Cotleigh Buzzard at 4.8%. A nice pub, always worth the walk out from Exeter.

I have been to the Poachers at Ide on numerous occasions, coming from Plymouth i have always enjoyed the trip up and then winding your way through the lanes of Ide to find the Poachers Inn.
The pub is on the High St and sits opposite the road that leads to the Parish church, on a personal note, i think this pub is one of the best around this area and there are quite a few decent pubs to choose from, but certainly the best pub this close to Exeter City centre. The pub has a great garden at the back which looks over fields and inside the pub looks and feels great. Upto 5 Real Ales and all of them are from West Country breweries, nice to see a pub that deals in South West beers, i believe Devon is blest with something like 29 Micro Breweries, so there is plenty of choice. The Poachers always has Branscombe Vale Branoc on, which is a superb light gravity ale, the other ales usually come from O'Hanlons of Whimple and Otter of Luppit. The food comes highly recommended and the portions are fair!
Definitely worth a look, an all round decent boozer in a lovely location.

Stayed here in May 2008 on the way to Cornwall. Could easily have remained for more than one night as there was a beer fest in the garden that weekend. About 5 beers on - unable to recall them all. Very welcoming staff and locals. Accomodation & brekko jolly good value. Well worth another visit and stay.

There's a new landlord at the Poacher's, so we took a walk over there to see what it's like now. It's now open all day (including Sundays), which is useful after a long and thirsty walk from Exeter via Longdown (and the Lamb, which was shut). There were 5 beers on when we visited (Branoc, Yellowhammer, Barn Owl, Dorset Gold, Otter), and the O'Hanlon's Yellowhammer which we had was very nice. The food menu looks as good as ever and we'll be over to check it out for our wedding anniversary. Still an excellent pub, possibly even better than it used to be - I only wish I could afford to live in Ide.
