Friendly village pub, with a lovely, cosy interior. Locals were having a philosophical debate about the short-term future of the country, given the arrival of coronavirus. They were interested to hear from somebody who was out of town and trying to visit every pub in the country. Sadly, I think my quest may become too easy soon. But I really hope that village locals like this survive the current crisis, as they are integral to our heritage. The ale range was good - Branscombe Vale Branoc, Exeter Tomahawk & Darkness, Salcombe Lifesaver & South Hams Eddystone. The Darkness was the first dark beer I'd seen all weekend in what was my 23rd pub! blue_scrumpy - 17 Mar 2020 21:17 |
A simply wonderful place. Inside is very charming and quirky and outside is a wonderful beer garden with views over fields. Nice selection of ales too. Ide is an absolute gem of a place and the Huntsman pub down the road is worth a visit too. 10/10 montie49 - 21 Jul 2013 13:58 |
Lovely quiet pub for a mid-week afternoon read of the paper and a pint. Friendly lad behind the bar, a roaring fire and good beer selection - sadly all pretty much the same ABVs, but well kept all the same. littledrummerboy - 24 Feb 2013 11:39 |
this pub ticks every box. Friendly, laid back landlord. Lovely Boxer dog roaming around. Cosy, tasteful interior with a real fire. Fellow diners/drinkers were a really nice bunch. Superb good value food and really well kept ales including the dark and dangerous Exmoor Beast. If our local was half as good as this we would end up broke ! An absulute gem, one of the best pubs we"ve been in for years. westbound - 21 Sep 2012 17:35 |
A previous comment was that this is almost the perfect pub and that all it needed to make it perfect would be an open fire. Well, I visited yesterday, found a roaring fire and, for the first time in dozens of ratings, I'm giving this pub 10 out of 10. The real ales were a delight (see their website for details), the food was wholesome and generous, the staff were wonderfully friendly and the landlord held Court to the amusement of all. It took me back to a time when the community, young and old, all came to the pub and the place hummed with the buzz of happy people chatting over a drink. I liked it so much that I even stayed the night. Lovely room, wonderful view over Devon hills and a proper breakfast. Thank you Tony. slickslinger - 1 Mar 2012 08:16 |
