Having read the reviews on food at the New Inn we thought we were at a different New Inn when we visited on 1st September. The bar itself was dull and dreary with old odd tables and mismatched chairs. The food was disappointing. We had a bar lunch of spaghetti with minced beef and pork ragout which was just completely tasteless. As the meals came within a few minutes of ordering , they were obviously microwaved, also overpriced. The staff although pleasant enough were scruffy - our waitress in what appeared to be paint or bleach spattered shorts. The barman/waiter looked unprofessional too. We will not be going to the New Inn again

Very much a curate's egg. Firstly the good bits - the beer was fine and the food was OK. Now the bad, it doesn't seem to have anybody in charge and the bar staff just aren't that welcoming. Moreover it suffers from an atrocious lack of attention to detail e.g. broken furniture still in the bar which has clearly been there for ages and the fact that the windows haven't been cleaned since the old king was a lad. Could be a great pub but at the moment, just isn't. The Giant is er... a giant in comparison

8 of us went to the New Inn last Tuesday after a lovely walk around the area. The beer was very well kept, but the food was in another league, they had the normal pub fare but the dish on the specials board that caught most peoples eye was the venison and chocolate pie, six of the eight went for and it was delicious, I had a taste! i had the warm chicken and bacon salad with saute potatoes and a perfectly poached egg and again it was top notch. Both dishes were under 10. The pub itself was fairly lively and bearing in mind this a Tuesday evening I think it would be necessary to book a table for a Friday or Saturday night. Friendly, welcoming landlord and caring staff, I have no hesitation in recommending this pub to anyone.

Traditional interior with a small bar and very friendly welcome with well kept Palmers IPA and Copper on handpump. The food is exceptionally good modern British with excellent pork belly, cod and salmon dishes on my visit and well worth the 12-13 for a main .The menu changes monthly and there are also many daily specials around the 9 mark.A true gastro pub with seating around the bar and towards the rear .Well worth a visit under this new ownership.

Wow, what a difference. The new people (since June 2009) seem to have breathed new life into this beautiful building. The decor hasn't altered much but great plans are afoot. However, the food, welcome and beer are vastly improved and the locals have returned en mass. The menu is carefully put together using local ingredients and the beer drinker is well served with some cracking pub dishes that include homemade pies, brilliant sausage and mash and fresh haddock and chips. In all, well worth a visit and the Palmers Ales are in great nick.

Had a freezing walk round the giant with some friends and ended up here. Our first impression was good when the landlord immediately came to find us a table suitable for 4 adults, 4 kids and a baby! He then impressed us further by coming to the table to take our drinks order. The food was of a good standard (although all our orders were fairly basic) and came quickly enough to satisfy 4 hungry boys, but not so fast as to suggest it had all been microwaved! One small grumble - the goats cheese and mushroom paninis turned up minus their mushrooms! Desserts were also good and the landlord even searched in the bottom of the freezer to find chocolate ice-cream (not on the menu!) for two fussy young eaters! Good beer from a selection of local ales and ciders. The younger members of the group were also kept entertained by a range of games available. Toilets were basic but clean, but a place for changing a baby would be a welcome addition. Overall a very pleasant place for lunch and family friendly too.

We have just come back from a night spent at The New Inn after a wedding in Sherborne. I would have to say that our only advice would be to try and find somewhere else at all costs. I'm so disappointed that I've registered on BITE just to get this off my chest.
Whilst, ultimately, the staff were accommodating, our very poor rating comes from the fact that the rooms, bar, and restaurant all feel really, really grubby. Dirty carpets, dirty bathrooms plastered in loo cleaner (which doesn't cover up much) and the general feeling of being more than tired around the gills. It felt distinctly unhygienic - like you wouldn't want to walk on the carpets in bare feet, let alone sleep or bathe anywhere near it. Crumbling bathroom with shelves coming off the wall, grimy sheets - everything is really very wrong about The New Inn.
And then the fact that we were charged a ridiculous 90 for a double room; that I was awoken twice in the night by the snoring of our next door neighbour (nice), and that breakfast runs from 8am to 9am. A place very ,uch stuck in the 70s.
Whilst we didn't eat there - other than a very unchallenging and not to be recommended breakfast - I have to say that nothing about the menu ("spicy tuna bake") seemed to say anything other than stay away.
For our money, I really wish we'd stayed at The Queens Arms in Corton Denham - further a way, but a really lovely place with great food, service and an awesome selection of beer and wine.

Don't even think about doing anything than having a pint here.
The food is the worst I have eaten anywhere in the UK. A supposedly rare steak was sent back for being burnt only to return as carbonite. AVOID!

The New Inn has improved greatly under the current regime. The food is great and the atmosphere is good. Definately the place to eat in Cerne Abbas at the moment.

I've stayed her on and off over a period of about 12 years and it is a beautiful old building in a lovely village. The accommodation is good value but the pub side of it has been through a lot of changes. When we first knew this place it was a lot shabbier and I like shabby! I think it was taken over by new management again about 18 months ago and it has got some of its good atmosphere back. The breakfasts are great. Reasonable choice of beers and wines (though not at breakfast).

My family and I recently visited the New Inn for a birthday celebration and enjoyed our visit very much. The welcome was exceptional, along with the atmosphere and service. Our meals were delicious especially the lamb shank and fresh bream with a lemon sauce. The homemade desserts particularly the dorset apple cake were scrummy!!! We will most certainly be returning soon. I would recommend this pub to anyone

Tried this pub after extensive advertising in the local paper and to be honest it was very poor, all the veg was microwaved the salmon was passable the vegatarian mixed bean with salad was only just warm. Over all I think it was over-rated and there was a skin on the custard which had also been in the microwave. Please ditch the microwave your food could be quite nice if it was cooked for your customers. We wouldent mind the wait.

Extensive old coaching inn in the centre of the village. Couple of bars inside, but with courtyard seating outside and a large peaceful garden at the back.
The food was good - home made with large portions. Two real ales were available when I visited and the Wadworth's 6X tasted good.
Accomodation is also available I believe.
