please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
In the 70's I worked at this pub, it was owned by Terrie and Jennie Walker Spiers. I thought of them as very kind and generous people. I met people there from all over the world, every month or so more friends would come in from other countries. I met some of the most interesting and talented people. Currently I live in California, but I must admit, I do miss those nights of working at the Wheatsheaf, 5 rows deep of nothing but pint glasses waving in front of your eyes...great music playing...and a full night of the after parties on the weekends. I was happy to see the web site and the music scene still alive, just sayin.....just sharing.......

I did pop in yesterday just for old times sake and must admit the current owners have given it a good revamp and update but alas it is personally not for me.
They are trying to appeal to a younger crowd of drinkers and not to old fossils like myself and good luck to them...long live the sheaf....!!
|
my previous review was rather doom laden as i now believe the sheaf is reopened as a pub and not turned into flats as i ominously predicted...!!
please post a review of the new sheaf and let us know what its like...!!

I PASSED BY HERE THE OTHER DAY AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE SHEAF HAS MET THE SAME FATE AS THE BULL ACROSS THE ROAD....I.E. CLOSED DOWN PERMANENTLY AS A PUB ONLY TO BE CONVERTED TO RESIDENTIAL USE....SUCH A SHAME.
R.I.P. THE WHEATSHEAF.

A small pub which tries to cram too many people in with loud, obnoxious bands. Thought this place had died a long overdue death, but to no avail.
Last time I visited, there were three handpumps, one of which was turned round and two showing as available. The landlord declared that one of the remaining two was, indeed, off, but gave me a vacant look when I suggested he should perhaps turn the pump clip around. The remaining beer, Greene King IPA, came out as pure froth. The landlord, unsurprisingly, declared this to be off too. His response (and this will go down in pub folklore) was: "If you like real ale, we've got John Smiths Smooth". I left very quickly.

This use to be a really good pub and certainly one of the bext Rock Pub's in the area - good beer, good friends & good times. Whilst it's great to see it open again the refurbishment is awful. It now looks like a victorian palour, with potted plants on stands & net curtains in the windows!! And whose idea was it to move the stage next to the main front door so that when you are trying to watch bands you keep being bumped and shoved by people coming in and out. This is such a big pub, with a great garden and it has so much potential - please don't let it get closed down again!

come on all you rocknuts. get on down to the wheatsheaf & lets get it rocking again. bands start playing live again on sat 23rd of august 2008 kicking off with the donkeys. they are followed by other bands on following satedays. the new landlord needs to know that the bands will attract enough rocknuts to make live music viable. rock on!

Is it really a rockers pub again, after all these years? Robert Calvert played his last gig in d Weety, Frank was carried around by Kev and Andy - and we all stuck to the floor.
No beer of note in those days, but it was fun.
