user reviews of the Cannon Inn, Newton Poppleford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I went there a few weeks ago with a group of friends from Sidmouth. The beer and food were OK. If you're in NP and need a drink then it's fine, but not really a destination in itself.

Not very impressed with this place at all.
Inside was depressing, beer garden was awful and beer was flat.

3/10

Quirky, unkempt, lovable are three words I could use about this pub. Beer comes straight from the barrel and they have a little beer festival during the August bank holiday weekend. Popped in a number of times when holidaying in the area.

A fairly run down pub, but the restaurant area retains some charm and the food is very good.

However the bar area next door is "duelling banjos" with silver backs at the bar. Avoid.

Quiet on a Tuesday night. But the food was nice and a decent pint of Yellow Hammer, to wash the grub down. Several specials on, that included a pint with the meal. Our party sampled various things on the menu and we all enjoyed the food.

Sadly it now appears this is the only pub in Newton, as the Exeter is set to become a house.

Passing through around lunchtime today and we had read the reviews here, so were a bit sceptical.
Nowhere else was open so we gave it a go.
At least four ales on gravity behind the bar which unfortunately we couldn't sample as we were driving.
There was a huge menu to choose from and a large separate vegetarian menu. We ordered the Sunday Roasts and they came quite quickly and were excellent. The service was fast and friendly and we will definitely be visiting again when I have someone to drive me.

A large corner pub, with white painted brick and red paintwork. It had a black painted timber framed porch.

The interior had two room. I didnt see the lounge. The bar was small; it had white walls, with a stone fireplace, a Tv, with boxing on, and other ephemera. There was a younger crowd in the corner, watching the fight and nobody else was in. Service was ok i guess.

Beer; tap stuff with Otter Ale on handpull, which was fine. There was also Spitfire on, which i wouldnt touch.

A pub with nothing really to attract me, i cant see myself wanting to go back.

The Cannon Inn could and should be a popular pub. There is a large car park, the only pub in Newton Poppleford with one. However, it is rather unkempt and doesn't score in the "first impressions" stake.
Having travelled from Sussex to stay with relatives, we chose the Cannon for our Saturday evening meal arriving at 8pm. After getting the first round of drinks, we ordered our food, cod and chips, 2 rump steaks and a mixed grill. No fish....,no steaks... and therefore no mixed grill. We finished our drinks and left. After a lovely meal at La Rosetta italian restaurant, we wondered back past the Cannon at 10.15pm. There were two people in the saloon bar and two in the public bar. What dose this tell you about the Cannon? Could do better, in fact must do better.

The Cannon is a popular local inn offering excellent food, accommodation and plentiful parking.

Situated on the A3052 in the charming village of Newton Poppleford, just a few miles from the M5 and close to the popular Regency seaside town of Sidmouth, The Cannon is an ideal base for those wishing to explore the Jurassic Coast, Dartmoor and the ancient cathedral city of Exeter.

Nigel Mansells legendary World of Racing Museum ,Woodbury Park Country Club and Golf Club are a short drive across Woodbury Common, designated an area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty.

Exmouths sandy beaches and many unspoiled fishing villages are close by to this special pub.
